QUESTION 14
1.A 100cm steel tape standardized at 68°F and supported throughout under a tension of 20N was found to be
100.012mm long. The tape had a cross-sectional area 0.0078mm2 of and a weight of 0.0266kg.This tape is used to
lay off a horizontal distance CD of exactly 175.00m. The tape will be used fully supported. Determine the correct
slope distance to layoff if a pull of 15N is used and the temperature is 87°F.

QUESTION 18
QUESTION 19
The table below shows the final coordinate of a plot of land of Miss Oyindamola Aminat, compute the adjusted
bearing and distances of the plot.
A steel tape of nominal length 30m was used to measure a line AB by suspending it between two
supports. The following measurements were recorded.
LINE Measured length Slope angle Mean temperature Tension applied
AB 29.872m 3˚ 40’ 5˚C 120N
The standardized length of the tape against a reference tape was known to be 30.014m at 20˚C and 50N
tension. If the tape weighs 0.17m-1 and has a cross sectional area of 2mm2 , calculate the horizontal
length of line AB. Young’s modulus (E) for the tape material is 200kN mm-1 and the coefficient of
thermal expansion (α) is 0.0000112 per˚ C.
QUESTION 21
A steel tape of nominal length 30m was used to transfer a level from a reference line near the base of a
vertical concrete column to a reference line near its top. A 100N weight was attached to its free end and
the tape was hung freely down the side of the column such that its 100mm mark was against the bottom
reference line. A reading of 14.762m was obtained at the top of the reference line. The tape used was
standardized on the flat as 30.007m at a tension of 50N and a temperature of 20˚C. It had a cross
sectional area of 1.9mm2, the co-efficient of thermal expansion of the tape material was 0.0000112 per
˚C and young modulus was 210kNmm-3. During the measurement the mean temperature of the tape was
3˚C. Calculate the vertical distance between the two reference points.
QUESTION 22
What is the H.C.R and V.C.R in the micrometer scale of the wild T16 theodolite shown in the figure
below?
QUESTION 23
The table below shows the field data extracted from a Theodolite traverse book.
QUESTION 25
The tape weights 0.255kg/meter and has a cross-sectional area of 1.150mm². It was standardized on the
flat at 19°C under a pull of 78N. The coefficient of expansion of the tape material is 1.5×10 -4 per °C and
Young’s Modulus E is 250Kn/mm². If the field tension and temperature is 85N and 27˚C, calculate the
correction to be applied to all the linear measurement and the corrected length.
b. A survey line is 85.45m long. If the tape used is 50.00m when standardize at 17°. What
correction must be applied if the temperature at the time of measurement is 26° C. Assume α 11.2 × 10-6
per oF
QUESTION 26
