QUESTION 20

A steel tape of nominal length 30m was used to measure a line AB by suspending it between two
supports. The following measurements were recorded.
LINE Measured length Slope angle Mean temperature Tension applied
AB 29.872m 3˚ 40’ 5˚C 120N
The standardized length of the tape against a reference tape was known to be 30.014m at 20˚C and 50N
tension. If the tape weighs 0.17m-1 and has a cross sectional area of 2mm2 , calculate the horizontal
length of line AB. Young’s modulus (E) for the tape material is 200kN mm-1 and the coefficient of
thermal expansion (α) is 0.0000112 per˚ C.
QUESTION 21
A steel tape of nominal length 30m was used to transfer a level from a reference line near the base of a
vertical concrete column to a reference line near its top. A 100N weight was attached to its free end and
the tape was hung freely down the side of the column such that its 100mm mark was against the bottom
reference line. The tape used was standardized on the flat as 30.007m at a tension of 50N and a
temperature of 20˚C. It had a cross sectional area of 1.9mm2, the co-efficient of thermal expansion of the
tape material was 0.0000112 per ˚C and young modulus was 210kNmm-3. During the measurement the
mean temperature of the tape was 3˚C. Calculate the vertical distance between the two reference points.
