• The Indian Army has launched Operation Sarvashakti in Jammu and Kashmir. It involves
security forces on both sides of the Pir Panjal range. The goal is to flush out militants who
have ambushed Indian troops in Rajouri and Poonch.
• The Himalayan Wolf (Canis lupus chanco) is a prominent lupine predator found across the
Himalayas. Its taxonomic status had been unclear until recently. The animal has now been
assessed for the first time on the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
• Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link
(MTHL), also known as Atal Setu, marking the opening of India’s longest sea bridge to date.
The 21.8-kilometer link built at a cost of over Rs 17,840 crores.
• Kachchhi Kharek (dates), from Gujarat has recently received a Geographical Indication (GI)
tag.
• Gangasagar fair is celebrated every year on 14 or 15 January. This fair is held on the day of
Makar Sankranti. In the year 2023, about 51 lakh devotees participated in this fair. This fair
is held in South Pargana district of West Bengal.
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the ‘Swachh Mandir’ (Clean Temple) campaign
ahead of the Ram temple consecration in Ayodhya on January 22.
• Aruna Nayar, an Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) Officer of the 1987 Batch, has
assumed the role of Railway Board Secretary.
• Jaipur’s Divyakriti Singh, aged 23, is the inaugural Indian female recipient of the Arjuna
Award for equestrian sports.
• According to the 2024 Henley Passport Index, India is ranked 80th out of 199 countries.
• The XSPECT instrument aboard India’s pioneering XPoSat space observatory has
successfully acquired its first images of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant. The
achievement comes within days of the mission’s January 1 launch.
• XPoSat (X-ray Polarimeter Satellite) is ISRO's first mission to study the polarization of X-
rays from bright celestial sources in the medium frequency band. The satellite carries two
scientific payloads, the Indian X-ray Polarimeter (POLIX) and X-ray Spectroscopy and
Timing (XSPECT), in a low Earth orbit
• A striking new butterfly species called the Conjoined Silverline, distinguished by its shiny
wing patterns, has been identified in Karnataka’s Kodagu district – the first such find in India’s
Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot since the 1970s.
• The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed and launched
a new 7.62mm caliber assault rifle named ‘Ugram’ intended as a standard-issue weapon for
the Indian Armed Forces replacing some aging INSAS rifles.
• French President Emmanuel Macron sparked a cabinet shakeup this week by naming popular
Minister of Education Gabriel Attal as the country’s newest Prime Minister after incumbent
PM Elisabeth Borne resigned amid growing political challenges. He will be France's
youngest prime minister and the first to be openly gay.
• Researchers at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have developed an
innovative new system called Work4Food that could guarantee fair minimum incomes for food
delivery personnel in India’s booming app-based food ordering industry.
• Microsoft has unveiled an ambitious new initiative called AI Odyssey that aims to provide
advanced skills training in artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies to 100,000 software
developers across India.
• The Danish government has announced the launch of the Green Fuels Alliance India
(GFAI), a strategic initiative aimed at advancing collaboration between Denmark and India in
the sustainable energy solutions sector.
• Mario Zagallo, the first ever footballer to win the FIFA World Cup trophy as both player and
coach, passed away aged 92 in Brazil.

• The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) under the Shipping Ministry is hosting the

• The Udanti Sitanadi Tiger Reserve, which was recently in the news due to issues related to
encroachment, is located in the state of Chhattisgarh.
• Punjab has become the first state in India to map all 784 accident black spots on the Mappls
App, a navigation system developed by MapMyIndia.
• India has submitted nominations for three cities – Indore, Bhopal and Udaipur – to receive
the tag of ‘International Wetland City’ under the Ramsar Convention.
• The Similipal kai chutney, made with red weaver ants by the tribal people of Odisha’s
Mayurbhanj district, received a geographical indication (GI) tag on January 2nd, 2024.
• The Indian and UAE armies have commenced their first-ever joint military training exercise
called ‘Desert Cyclone’ in Rajasthan on January 2.
• NASA has relaunched a spacecraft to explore an asteroid nicknamed the “God of Chaos” that
will make an extremely close flyby of Earth in 2029.
• Doctors at Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Centre have indigenously developed Prevall, the first
chemotherapy drug in India to be available as a syrup formulation.
• Nina Singh Becomes First Woman Chief of Industrial Security Force.
• The 6th Khelo India Youth Games will be held from 19 to 31 January 2024 in Tamilnadu. It
will be organised in Chennai, Trichy, Madurai and Coimbatore. For the first time, Squash will
be included in these games.
• In a significant milestone in the fight against malaria, the World Health Organization (WHO)
granted prequalification to the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine developed by the University of
Oxford and manufactured by the biotechnology company Serum Institute of India.
• Kuwait’s new emir, Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, formally assumed leadership in a
swearing-in ceremony before parliament following the passing of his half-brother, Sheikh
