Palgrave Handbooks in German Idealism is a series of comprehensive and
authoritative edited volumes on the major German idealist philosophers and
their critics. Underpinning the series is the successful Palgrave Handbook of
German Idealism (2014), edited by Matthew C. Altman, which provides an
overview of the period, its greatest philosophers, and its historical and philo-
sophical importance.
Individual volumes focus on specific philosophers and major themes, offer-
ing a more detailed treatment of the many facets of their work in metaphysics,
epistemology, logic, ethics, aesthetics, political philosophy, and several other
areas. Each volume is edited by one or more internationally recognized experts
in the subject, and contributors include both established figures and younger
scholars with innovative readings. The series offers a wide-ranging and author-
itative insight into German Idealism, appropriate for both students and
specialists.

The era of German Idealism stands alongside ancient Greece and the French
Enlightenment as one of the most fruitful and influential periods in the his-
tory of philosophy. Beginning with the publication of Kant’s Critique of Pure
Reason in 1781 and ending about ten years after Hegel’s death in 1831, the
period of “classical German philosophy” transformed whole fields of philo-
sophical endeavor. The intellectual energy of this movement is still very much
alive in contemporary philosophy; the philosophers of that period continue to
inform our thinking and spark debates of interpretation.
After a period of neglect as a result of the early analytic philosophers’ rejec-
tion of idealism, interest in the field has grown exponentially in recent years.
Indeed, the study of German Idealism has perhaps never been more active in
the English-speaking world than it is today. Many books appear every year
that offer historical/interpretive approaches to understanding the work of the
German idealists, and many others adopt and develop their insights and apply
them to contemporary issues in epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, politics,
and aesthetics, among other fields. In addition, a number of international
journals are devoted to idealism as a whole and to specific idealist philoso-
phers, and journals in both the history of philosophy and contemporary phi-
losophies have regular contributions on the German idealists. In numerous
countries, there are regular conferences and study groups run by philosophical
associations that focus on this period and its key figures, especially Kant,
Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, and Schopenhauer.
As part of this growing discussion, the volumes in the Palgrave Handbooks
in German Idealism series are designed to provide overviews of the major fig-
ures and movements in German Idealism, with a breadth and depth of cover-
age that distinguishes them from other anthologies. Chapters have been

specially commissioned for this series, and they are written by established and
emerging scholars from throughout the world. Contributors not only provide
overviews of their subject matter but also explore the cutting edge of the field
by advancing original theses. Some authors develop or revise positions that
they have taken in their other publications, and some take novel approaches
that challenge existing paradigms. The Palgrave Handbooks in German Idealism
thus give students a natural starting point from which to begin their study of
German Idealism, and they serve as a resource for advanced scholars to engage
in meaningful discussions about the movement’s philosophical and historical
importance.
In short, the Palgrave Handbooks in German Idealism have comprehensive-
ness, accessibility, depth, and philosophical rigor as their overriding goals.
These are challenging aims, to be sure, especially when held simultaneously,
but that is the task that the excellent scholars who are editing and contribut-
ing to these volumes have set for themselves.

His current research involves the exploration of Hegel’s philosophy of art and
its implications for understanding Hegel’s epistemology, metaphysics, and
politics.
Daniel Conway is Professor of Philosophy and Humanities, Affiliate
Professor of Religious Studies, Film Studies, and Law, and Arts & Humanities
Fellow at Texas A&M University. He lectures and publishes widely on topics
in Post-Kantian European Philosophy, Political Theory, Aesthetics, and
Genocide Studies. His most recent publications include studies of Nietzsche,
Kierkegaard, Hannah Arendt, law and humanities, and treatments of geno-
cide in the cinematic genre of science fiction.
István Czakó is Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy at the
Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Hungary. He holds a licentia degree and
a Habilitation degree in philosophy, and a Ph.D. in theology. He has pub-
lished a number of articles in the Kierkegaard Studies Yearbook and Acta
Kierkegaardiana as well as the series Kierkegaard Research: Sources, Reception
and Resources and Danish Golden Age Studies. His recent books include Geist
und Unsterblichkeit: Grundprobleme der Religionsphilosophie und Eschatologie
im Denken Søren Kierkegaards (2014) and Paradoxes of Existence: Contributions
to Kierkegaard Research (2016).
Christian Danz studied Protestant Theology at the University of Jena. From
2000 to 2002 he was Professor for Systematic Theology in Essen, and since
2002 he has been Professor for Systematic Theology at the University of
Vienna. Since 2006 he has been the President of the German Paul Tillich
Society. He is the author of the following works: Die philosophische Christologie

Theologie als Theorie der Konstitutionsbedingungen individueller Subjektivität

essays on the philosophy of Kant, Hegel, and Jacobi. He is currently working
on an English edition of Jacobi’s Von den göttlichen Dingen und ihre Offenbarung
that will appear at McGill-Queen’s Press.
Thomas P. Miles holds the position of Visiting Assistant Professor in the
Philosophy Department of Assumption College. He is a specialist in
nineteenth- and twentieth-century Continental philosophy. He has published
widely on ethics and existentialism, and is the author of Kierkegaard and
Nietzsche on the Best Way of Life: A New Method of Ethics (2013).
Peter Šajda is Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy at the
Slovak Academy of Sciences. He is the co-editor of the Kierkegaard Studies
Yearbook and the series Kierkegaard Research: Sources, Reception and Resources.
His research focuses on the philosophy of Kierkegaard and its reception in the
twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and more broadly on anthropological,
ethical, philosophical- religious and social-political themes in German
Idealism, existentialism, Neo-Marxism and modern Catholicism. His books
include Buber’s Polemic with Kierkegaard: On the Relation of Religion to Ethics
and Politics (2013, in Slovak) and The Kierkegaard Renaissance: Philosophy,
Religion, Politics (2016, in Slovak).
Heiko Schulz teaches Systematic Theology and Philosophy of Religion at
the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt. His research areas include Søren Kierkegaard
and modern philosophy of religion. He is co-editor of the Deutsche Søren
Kierkegaard Edition, Kierkegaard Studies Yearbook and Kierkegaard Studies
Monograph Series. His recent publications include Natur, Religion, Wissenschaft.

For the first time in a fortnight there had been a few hours of really
good visibility, and, as a consequence, the artillery of both sides
were endeavouring to make up for lost time with an increase of
activity, just as a pet Pomeranian begins to cut capers the instant it is
freed from its restraining leash. For some reason, a goodly share of
the Austrian fire appeared to be directed to the vicinity of a certain
road along which we had to pick our way in returning from an
advanced Italian position we had just visited.
A road under heavy gun fire is not a comfortable place to be at
large upon on any of the battle fronts of Europe, and least of all that
of the stony Carso, where flying rock fragments increase the
casualties three and four-fold over what they would be if the hurtling
shells were burying themselves in eight or ten feet of soft earth
before accumulating enough resistance to detonate their charges of
high explosive. The ‘cave-men’ who held the plateau had all
disappeared into their burrows on the ‘lee’ side of the dolinas or sink-
holes which pit the repulsive face of the Carsic hills, but here and
there along the road there were evidences—mostly pools of blood
and scattered kit—that some whom recklessness or duty had kept
from cover had met with trouble. Plainly there was going to be work
for the Red Cross, and one of the first things I began to wonder
about after we had passed on to the comparative shelter of a side-
hill, was whether or not they would see fit to risk one of their precious
ambulances up there on the shell-torn plateau where, from the rattle
and roar, it was evident that, in spite of the failing light, things were
going to be considerably worse before they began to be better.
Picking up our waiting car in the niche of a protecting cliff, we
coasted down across the face of a hillside honeycombed with dug-
outs to the bottom of a narrow valley, a point which appeared, for the
time being at least, the ‘head of navigation’ for motor traffic. Here we
found ourselves stopped by the jam that had piled up on both sides
of a hulking ‘210’ that was being warped around a ‘hairpin’ turn.
Suddenly I noticed a commotion in the wriggling line of lorries, carts,
and pack-mules that wound down from the farther side of the jam,
and presently there wallowed into sight a couple of light ambulances,
plainly—from the purposeful persistence with which they kept
plugging on through the blockade—on urgent business.
Now the very existence of a jam on a road is in itself evidence of
the fact that there is an impasse somewhere, and until this is broken
the confusion only becomes confounded by any misdirected
attempts to push ahead from either direction. But the ambulance is
largely a law unto itself, and when it signals for a right-of-way there is
always an attempt to make way for it where any other vehicle (save,
of course, one carrying reinforcements or munitions at the height of a
battle) would have to wait its turn. Mules and carts and lorries
crowded closer against each other or edged a few more precarious
inches over the side, and by dint of good luck and skilful driving, the
two ambulances finally filtered through the blockade and came to a
halt alongside our waiting car on the upper end. Then I saw that their
cool-headed young drivers were dressed in khaki, and knew, even
before I read in English on the side of one of the cars that it was the
gift of some Indian province—that they belonged to a unit of the
British Red Cross.
‘Plucky chaps those,’ remarked the Italian officer escorting me.
‘Ready to go anywhere and at any time. But it’s hardly possible
they’re going to venture up on to the plateau while that
bombardment’s going on. That’s work for the night-time, after the
guns have quieted down. But there is one of them coming back now;
perhaps they’re going to discuss the situation before going on.’
I leaned out to eavesdrop on that momentous debate, and this is
what I heard:
‘Jolly awful tobacco this,’ said the one on the ground, after filling
his pipe from his companion’s pouch.
