Problem 11.4
The yield model is an engineering mechanics approach to evaluating the capacity of dowel-type
fasteners loaded in shear in wood connections. It involves the determination of a load capacity
for each possible yield mode (yield mechanism) for a connection. The smallest load capacity is
associated with the true yield mechanism of the connection. The following properties are used to
predict connection load capacity based on the yield model:
The dowel bearing strength (Fe) of a wood member is based on the specific gravity (G) of the
wood member, the angle of load to grain in the member (θ), and the diameter of the fastener (D)
in the connection.

a) Hem-Fir (G = 0.43), parallel-to-grain; Fe = 11,200 G = 11,200 (0.43) = 4816 psi ≈ 4800 psi
for all fasteners with D ≥ ¼ in.
c) Douglas Fir-Larch (G = 0.5), parallel-to-grain; Fe = 11,200 G = 11,200 (0.5) = 5600 psi for all
fasteners with D ≥ ¼ in.
