Enhancing Students' Comprehensionl of Reading through the Use of Peer-
Assisted Learning Techniques
Part I. Situation
In the context of teaching English, reading is one of the most
crucial skills that learners need to acquire. Reading has always been covered
in the English curriculum as one of the four talents along with speaking,
listening, writing, and reading. It implies that teaching and learning English
requires a foundational understanding of reading. Learners need to grasp it in
order to be able to access further information and knowledge. It appears from
my observations that some of the fourth grade pupils at C. Gadrinab
Elementary School struggle with English, particularly with reading
comprehension. Many children struggle to grasp the text's core idea or topic,
have poor grammatical structure, a limited vocabulary, and are not proficient
readers. Apart from that situation, there are additional reasons contributing to
children' continued low reading comprehension abilities.

Part II- Intervention

Peer-Assisted studying techniques involve having students teach
other students while they are studying, making the learning process more
dynamic. With this, Partner Reading and Retelling is one of the activities of
Peer-Assisted studying techniques I used which every student of fourth graders
spends five minutes reading aloud from a connected text. This material is
chosen from the teacher's collection of works and should be challenging
enough for the student in each pair who performs less well. After the top
performance, the lower performer reads the identical passage. The instructor
comments, "Stop, you missed that word," whenever the student makes a
mistake. Is it something you can solve? “That word is —," the tutor says if the
student cannot identify it in four seconds. Which word is it? Saying the word,
the reader picks up where they left off. Following their reading, the less-
achieving student narrates just two minutes were read in the events sequence.
Each successfully read sentence earns a point for the student, and the retell
earns ten points.

Part III. Summary

Based on the result and discussion of the research, Partner
Reading and Retelling of Peer Assisted Learning Strategies could improve the
average score of students‘ reading comprehension in the class of fourth grader
students of C. Gadrinab Elementary School. This strategy could be used as
way to teach in reading class especially in learning narrative text. Moreover,
Peer Assisted Learning Strategies could help the students the text well. It could
be seen from the students‘ progress in test and in every meeting. There is
significant improvement that showed in this research, it proved from the
improvement of the average students‘ score and students who passed.
