QUESTION 1
1.1 A sum of money doubles in 5 years when the interest is compounded annually.
Calculate the rate of interest. (3)
1.2 Thabo wants to buy a mini computer. The cash price is R 5 499.
A deposit of 20% is required. After which the balance can be paid over 36 months.
Calculate the:
1.2.1 balance after the deposit is paid (2)
1.2.2 amount, including interest, that is to be paid over the 36 months if interest
is charged at simple interest rate of 18% p.a. (2)
1.2.3 amount, including interest, that Thabo must pay after 3 years if the
interest rate of 18% p.a. compounded quarterly is charged. (3)
1.3 Convert a nominal rate of 16% per annum compounded monthly to an
effective rate. (Answer correct to two decimal places) (4)

1.4 A small business buys a truck for R350 000. The truck will need to be replaced
in 6 years' time. If the truck depreciates at a rate of 5,9% p.a. on a reducing
balance, calculate the book value of the truck at the end of 6 years. (3)
