Dos horas después salía del puerto el vapor que conducía á los

Al despedirse don Romualdo de su suegra, la había dicho al oído:

—¿Cuáles?
—Los treinta mil del pico.
—¿César?
—Y va más contento que unas pascuas. ¡Pobre chico!
—¡Miren el sinvergüenza!
Al día siguiente sabía todo el pueblo que don Romualdo había
regalado treinta mil duros á un sobrino de don Serapio, que se había
presentado en su casa después de la boda, de vuelta de América,
pobre y desengañado.
Y como en el pueblo se había sabido algo, tiempos atrás, de ese
sobrino que había sido echado de casa porque amaba á su prima y
era correspondido de ella, se hizo la siguiente traducción del hecho
propagado por doña Sabina:
—César ha venido á interrumpir la boda, ó á provocar un escándalo;
la familia, queriendo evitarle, le ha dicho al novio que ha llegado un
primo de su mujer á pedirle su protección. Don Romualdo le ha
regalado treinta mil duros, y el chico los ha tomado, prometiendo á
sus tíos desaparecer de Europa y no volver á acordarse de
Enriqueta en los días de su vida.
Y así, pensando en don Romualdo, decía la gente:
—Pues, señor, hay que convenir en que ese hombre tiene rasgos
admirables y un corazón de perlas.
Y recordando después á César, exclamaba:
—¡Parece increíble! ¡Qué falta de decoro! ¡Qué poca vergüenza!
Tal es y ha sido siempre y donde quiera, con raras excepciones, el
criterio del público en cuestiones de conciencia y en actos de
justicia.
Con ese mismo criterio se crucificó á Jesucristo ayer, y se levantan
hoy estatuas á más de cuatro criminales. Por eso dijo uno de ellos,
después de rodar del trono que había asentado sobre más de seis
millones de cadáveres:
—«¡La pasión gobierna el mundo!».
