Time and Distance

Distance is how far one thing is from another thing. It is also a measure of the space between two things. It can be
measured along any path

Time is amount of duration required to cover distance

Speed tells us how fast something or someone is travelling. You can find the average speed of an object
if you know the distance travelled and the time it took

The formula for speed is speed = distance ÷ time.

For Example

 A person crosses a 600 m long street in 5 minutes. What is his speed in km per hour?

600
Speed = 5 x 60
m/sec.
= 2 m/sec.
18
= 2 x 5 km/hr

= 7.2 km/hr.

 An aeroplane covers a certain distance at a speed of 240 kmph in 5 hours. To cover the same distance in 1 hours, At
what speed it must travel?

Distance = (240 x 5) = 1200 km.

Speed = Distance/Time

Speed = 1200/(5/3) km/hr. [We can write 1 hours as 5/3 hours]

3
Required speed = 1200 x 5 = 720 km/hr.
km/hr
 A man walks 20 km in 4 hours. Find his speed?
 Rachel travelled 240 km in 4 hours by train and then travelled 120 km in 3 hours by car and 3 km
in 1/2 hour by cycle. What is the average speed during the whole journey?
 A car moves from A to B at a speed of 50 km/hr and comes back from B to A at a speed of 30
km/hr. Find its average speed during the journey

The formula can be rearranged in three ways:

 speed = distance ÷ time

 distance = speed × time
 time = distance ÷ speed

If a person walks at 14 km/hr instead of 10 km/hr, he would have walked 20 km more. What is the actual
distance travelled by him?

Let the actual distance travelled be x km.

x x + 20
Then, =
10 14
14x = 10x + 200
4x = 200
x = 50 km.

 A man completes a journey in 10 hours. He travels first half of the journey at the rate of 21 km/hr
and second half at the rate of 24 km/hr. Find the total journey in km.
 The ratio between the speeds of two trains is 7 : 8. If the second train runs 400 km in 4 hours,
then what is the speed of the first train?
 A man on tour travels first 160 km at 64 km/hr and the next 160 km at 80 km/hr. What is the
average speed for the first 320 km of the tour?
 A train covers 168 km in 4 hours. How much distance will it cover in 80 minutes?
 If a motorist moves with a speed of 30 km/hr and covers the distance from place A to place B in 3
hours 30 minutes, find the distance between place A and place B.
 How much father can an interstate bus go travelling 70 km/hr rather than 60 km/hr in 6 hours?
 Mohan drives a car at a uniform speed of 60 km/hr; find the time taken by him to
cover 280 km?
 Sam walks 2 km in 30 minutes. How much time will he take to cover 400m?
 If a man can cover 12 meters in one second, how many kilometers can he cover in 3 hours 45
minutes?
