ROTATING HEAD RIGID PENDANT (ACP‐90)

General Description
The unit is a vertically mounted Services Column that is rigidly mounted to the Ceiling
Structure of the Building Fabric. These units normally contain the Medical Gas, AGSS and
Electrical Services such as standard sockets together with UPS Sockets that are required at the
point of use. Configurations of these services will vary depending on the Customer
Specifications and requirements.
Care should be taken to ensure that the unit is securely fixed to ensure that there is a minimum
of deflection at the head/console.

The fixing method and supporting steelwork will vary according the building structure and the
depth of ceiling void.

Practical Considerations
The standard recommended height of the lower face of a rigid pendant with a horizontal shelf
is 1.4 meter, which will provide access to the equipment mounted on the Shelf.

3
NOVAIR

However, Pendants that have no shelf may be mounted at a higher level and which must take
into account the differing heights of theatre personnel who will have to make the connections
to the services, or conditions needed for particular operations.
The pendant should be located near the head of the operating table. However, note must be
taken of any moving equipment in the theatre, such as operating theatre lamps, to ensure
that the location of the pendant does not foul this equipment.
Finish
The pendant is normally supplied in white epoxy finish (RAL 9002), but other colours can be
provided. The unit can also be supplied with a special non‐reflective finish suitable for use with
laser equipment.
Electrical Requirements
The standard supply to the pendant is 220 volts, single phase, 50 Hz. Other voltages and
frequencies are available on request.

Medical Gas Hoses

The Medical Gas Hoses within the Pendant have NIST connections at the Ceiling connection
and at the connections to the Terminal Units in the Console Head. These Hose Assemblies
comply with EN 739. Frequent checking and Maintenance of these hoses is important to
ensure that the flexible connectors have not become worn or leaks have occurred that will
not be noticeable due to them being enclosed inside the Pendant.
Generally, these hoses and connectors should be replaced regularly and the replacement
timescale depends on the frequency of use of the Pendant. It is suggested that all hoses are
replaced, with factory supplied and tested items, every 2 years.

6
NOVAIR

Electrical Sockets
The Electrical Sockets installed may conform to differing standards to suit the user. The
operation of the sockets and the electrical connections should be checked on a regular basis
to ensure fault free conditions apply. Full safety checks of these electrical sockets and any
other electrical sockets in the Operating Theatre should be checked by the Hospital staff
frequently.

Pressure Gauges
Pressure gauges/indicators are provided in the Console to give an approximate indication of
the pressure at the gases within the Pendant. These units are not to be used as a finite
pressure indication and they are to be used only as an aid to fault identification.

General Description
The Multi‐movement pendant is a modular unit, which can be supplied with or without height
adjustment. The pendant consists of a ceiling mount, upon which a wide selection of arms can
be mounted. Flexible connectors carry services. Gas services are physically separated from the
electrical services. The bottom panel of the pendant can be removed to provide access for
maintenance.
An optional motor can be provided and gives 300mm of height adjustment. Other travel
lengths are available, depending on the installation. Operation is by an electrically activated
remote control push‐button located at the pendant, or if required, at a theatre wall panel.
The pendant meets the requirements of the UK DHSS Health Technical memorandum No.
2022. The standard medical gas terminals installed in the pendant conform to HTM No. 2022
and to BS.5682. The pendant can be constructed to other standards, and other makes of
terminal can be fitted.
It is recommended that the terminal units fitted into the pendant be of a similar type to those
in other parts of the hospital.

Operation
Pressing a switch in the remote control unit operates the pendant. One switch controls the
rise and another controls the fall. Components fitted into the pendant should be operated in
accordance with the manufacturer instructions.

Maintenance
Maintenance is important for this pendant to ensure that the flexible connectors have not
become worn. Generally, these connectors should be replace regularly. ‘Competent’ persons
as defined by HTM 2022 should carry out maintenance.
Maintenance of components should be in accordance with the manufacturer instructions.
It is recommended that the maintenance requirements for the components be combined into
one program of maintenance for the pendant and incorporated into the planned maintenance
program for the hospital.

Safety
The pendant should be installed by Competent’ persons as defined by HTM 2022. Particular
care should be taken when installing pendants with several gases to ensure that the pipeline
to each gas terminal outlet is connected to the correct gas supply pipeline.
Checks should be made using gas flow and gas identity tests to ensure that the connections
are correct.
Care should be taken to ensure that electrical earth connections are not disturbed and to
ensure that the pendant itself is correctly electrically bonded to the gas and electricity supply
to avoid hazard to patients and theatre personnel.

HORIZONTAL ARM PENDANTS

General Consideration
Horizontal arm pendants can be classified as single and twin horizontal arm pendants. As its
name implies, single horizontal arm pendant has a single arm (generally 1000mm long) which
has a capability of 340o rotation around its vertical axis. Twin horizontal Arm Pendant has two
arms 600mm and 800mm long respectively and capable of reaching further distances of
equipment in the area installed.

10
NOVAIR

Lengths of Arms used in Pendants are standard and 1000mm for single horizontal arm pendant
and 600 and 800mm for twin horizontal arm pendant. Optionally, other sizes can be
manufactured upon customer request.

Electrical Requirements
The standard supply to the pendant is 220 volts, single phase, 50 Hz. Other voltages and
frequencies are available on request.

The services are run to a first‐fix unit in the ceiling. For medical gases, these services will
terminate in a Non‐interchangeable screw connection (NIST) to BS 5682. The first fix
installation should be completed, fully tested and blanked until the second‐fix installation is
needed. The pendant is supplied as a second‐fix item for installation during the finishing of
the theatre and is normally supplied with all components installed and tested in the factory.
Gas services are via flexible hose connectors, which are attached to the first‐fix NIST
connectors. Electrical services in the pendant normally terminate in a junction (electrical) box,
at the top of the pendant for connection to the hospital electrical wiring system. The pendant
should be fitted to the solid ceiling of the theatre and not supported by a false ceiling only.
The pendant can be supplied as one long unit, which is secured to the main ceiling and then
passes through the false ceiling. Alternatively, a framework can be attached to the main
ceiling, which extends downwards to just above the false ceiling. The pendant can then be
attached to the framework. The pendant is supplied with a beveled fascia plate to provide a
neat junction at the ceiling. All securing bolts must be adequate for the load of the pendant.
Any framework must also be designed for rigidity. Even small loads, such as those imposed by
inserting gas probes can cause large deflections on a long pendant. Any framework should be
designed for maximum rigidity to avoid these deflections.

Installation of First Fix

As shown in Figure 1 the ceiling flange of NOVAIR pendants can be fixed by using male type
steel anchors placed to the holes drilled to the ceiling.
 Drill 8 holes to the ceiling according to the fixing plan of the ceiling flange (1).

Figure 21 Installation of Interface Flange

After completing the installation of ceiling flange, interface flange should be installed.
Installation of interface flange should be as described below and shown in Figure 21;
 The interface flange should be fixed to the ceiling flange by means of 4 pieces of 50 mm
diameter steel pipes, M20 threaded rods, washers and nuts which are manufactured for the
required length.
 Screw the hexagonal nut M20 (9) approximately 25 mm on the threaded rod M20 (7) and
apply a lock washer (8) then fix on the nut (10) which is welded on the ceiling flange (1).
 Screw the threaded rod M20 (7) to the ceiling flange (1) until it stops. And tighten the
hexagonal nut (9) securely.
 If the threaded rods (7) have not been screwed securely, the supporting system may fall
down. Hence, screwing of the threaded rods should be securely to the ceiling flange (1).

32
NOVAIR

 Supporting pipes (6) may cause heavy injuries. Since the interface flange (5) does not provide
safe fixing of the supporting pipes (6) on the threaded rod (7), nobody should be allowed
under the installation area during installation.
 After installation of the supporting pipes (6) on the threaded rods (7) place the interface
flange and fix it to the ceiling plate (1) by tightening the hexagonal nuts M 20 (11) and washers
