2.2Safety
2.2.1.1 If there are any damaged cables and the infringement of tightness, the
instrument operation is prohibited.
2.2.1.3 AC supply voltage of the electrical soldering shall be not higher than +24V,
and the soldering tip shall be earthed
2.2.2.1 The instrument shall be stored in the standard packing in dry unheated
premises, at air temperature from –30°С to +50°С and air humidity up to
70%, in the absence of vapors of acids, alkalis and other aggressive
substances.
2.2.2.3 In winter time you shall unpack the instrument in a heated premise only,
but previously keep it unpacked in that premise during 4 hours.
2.3Introduction
A self-contained spectral noise meter ALFA (hereinafter - instrument) is designed to carry out the
diagnostic studies of wells. The instrument allows you measuring the acoustic data in the frequency
range 235 to 30 kHz and recording the results of measurements of parameters in the non-volatile
memory.
The instrument is executed as a cylindrical container, which consists of the shank (1) for attaching on
the scraping wire, the plug (2), which is screwed into the instrument case (3). The instrument case
protects the core module of the instrument. The core module of the instrument consists of: battery
compartment (4), connection jack (5), electronic unit (6), sound measuring sensor module (7) and
absorber (8).

3 Operation
To control the instrument the ALFA_MANAGER software is used. With this program you can connect to
the instrument in the direct measurement and see the current sensor readings, upload the data from the
instrument memory, and configure the instrument for recording. ALFA_MANAGER software comes
complete on a disc.
Attention! High-temperature battery VHT200 usage pattern. If during the data reading from the
instrument you lose the connection with your computer, you must remove the battery and heat it to a
temperature of about 70 ° C. (for example, with a hairdryer), insert it back into the instrument and
continue operating.
3.1Direct Measurement
3.1.1 From the main program menu select "Instrument - Direct measurement", after that a
window as Figure 4-1will appear.
3.1.3 Select the instrument type “SHUM-S30”, and press the button "Connect". In case of
successful contact the sensor readings of downhole instrument will be displayed.
3.2.1 From the main program menu select "Instrument – Record Setup".
Figure 4-2
3.2.3 In the window parameter query, select the port and press “Connect”.
To find out the memory space of the instrument and to request the previous record time
scheme of the instrument, in order to draw or edit the algorithm-chart, which is made in
the next step of recording setup, you must be connected to the instrument.
Figure 4-3
3.2.4 After you successfully connected to the instrument, on the screen you will see a list of
parameters of the current instrument status.
Figure 4-4
The window "Algorithm- chart" is designed for charting the instrument records, and to
convert a record, which is understandable by the instrument, to the temporary scheme.
Figure 4-5
3.2.6 When you run the window the previous recording scheme of the instrument will be
loaded. If this scheme is good enough, you can go to the next step by clicking "Next".
3.2.7 If not, then you need to make a new scheme, or upload the previously created one in the
previous versions from the file of temporary scheme. You can do that through the menu
"File - Open".
Figure 4-6
3.2.8 You can make editing and charting through the menu "Record". The algorithm-chart has
no restrictions on the number of lines.
3.2.9 In drawing the algorithm chart, the number of pages and the number of records of
temporary scheme shall be calculated, 20 records are available. Temporary scheme is a
scheme, which is created at the transformation from the algorithm chart, and is
transmitted to the instrument.
When you add or edit the records, the following window opens.
Figure 4-7
Here you need to specify which sensors should be recorded into the memory, interrecord
gap and specify the record length.
The recording interval should be less than or equal to the record length.
3.2.10 When the algorithm chart is drawn up, click "Next" to move to the next step of the
instrument’s record setup start time of the instrument.

3.2.13 Record setup of the instrument is done. Press “Close” to close the window.
Figure 4-11
3.2.14 To verify the correctness of settings, you must go to the window "Direct
measurement". Connect to the instrument and view the instrument status.
3.3.1 To upload data from the instrument memory you should select the item "Instrument -
Upload data from the memory" from the main program menu. The uploading window
will appear. Herein, specify the port, to which the instrument is connected, and select
the instrument type SHUM-S30.
3.3.2 To start the data uploading you need to press the “Upload” button. After pressing this
button, the information will be downloaded into your computer, if there is some
recorded information in the instrument memory.
Figure 4-12
3.3.3 The process is displayed on a scale. After downloading is finished, you will be proposed
to save data in a file with the extension “*.ns30.dmp”. By default, you will be suggested
the file name that consists of the unique serial number of the instrument, and the start
date and time of data recording in the instrument memory. If you wish, you may change
the file name. If you reject to save data in the file, the downloaded data will not be
displayed on the screen.
3.3.4 After you save the data to a file, a new window of diagram appears with the latest data
unloaded from the instrument memory.
3.3.5 After you unloaded the data from the instrument memory they can’t be erased, which
allows you to re-unload the data from the memory.

4 Disassembly/Assembly
4.1Replacing the battery
Steps:
4.1.2 Unscrew the cap of the battery compartment (4) in Figure 2-2.
Attention!
While operating the unit in an environment with a temperature of 85 to 150°С, you need to use the
“AA” sized battery TADIRAN SL-560.
(See - http://www.tadiranbatteries.de/pdf/lithium-thionyl-chloride-batteries/SL-560.pdf )
5 Preventive Maintenance
5.1Maintenance check
The List of basic maintenance checks is given in the Table 6-1 below:
External examination Make sure that the instrument have no external mechanical
damage
Checking the Connect the instrument to your computer. Run the SAFManager
computer connection program; go to the "direct measurement" mode, select a port
and press “Connect” button. Make sure that the connection
exists and the supply voltage
is not less than 3 V.
No connection with the computer PC port fault. Connect the instrument to a working
port.
Instrument fault. Send the instrument for repairs to the
manufacturer.
5.2Maintenance
The nature of maintenance works of the instrument and their frequency are given in the Table 6-3.
1. Exterior check To check the condition of the O-rings Every time you
and, if necessary, replace them. open the instrument
