Voice

Active Voice Passive Voice

Active voice: in active voice, subject does the action.

e.g: Ali bought a new a car.

e.g: We are listening to the news.

Passive voice:

In passive voice, subject is the reciever of the action\ something is done to the subject.

e.g: A new car was bought by Ali.

Note: we can only change transitive verbs to passive.

 A verb which can be followed by an object is called transitive verb.


e.g: Sarah washes her clothes everyday.

Consider the following steps\rules while changing an active voice to passive voice:

1. Identify subject, verb, and object.

e.g: I help them. ( Active voice)

2. Change the place of subject to the object, and object to the subject.

Note: Change the subject pronouns to the object, and object to the subject.

e.g: I help them. ( Active voice)

Passive voice :

e.g: They me. Incomplete

3. Use auxiliary verbs according to tense.

e.g: They are me. Incomplete

4. Use past participle (third) form of the verb.

e.g: They are helped me. Incomplete

5. Use ( By phrase).

e.g: They are helped by me. Completed

Passive of Simple Present Tense

( Simple Present Tense Helping verbs)

e.g: Ali speaks Englsih.

e.g: English is spoken by Ali.

NEGATIVE:

Passive of Present Progressive Tense

Present Progressive Helping verbs are:

Subject + is, am, are + mv+ ing+ com+.

e.g: He is writing an essay.

Note: When we change a present progressive sentence to passive,

is, am, are should be followed by BEING + 3rd verb+ ( By phrase).

e.g: An essay is being written by him.

NEGATIVE:

The passive helping verbs of past progressive tense are: was\ were + being+ 3rd v

The passive helping verbs of simple future tense are: will\ shall+ be+ 3rd v.
