Introduction
It should be noted that this book will only focus on the propagation
(flows and stops) of masses without taking an interest of the initiation
of these mass flows – that is the cause of its destabilization. In other
words, the first question above is not addressed at all, nor the third (even
if some protective structures will be considered a couple of times in
the simulations presented). Basically, all simulations will consist of the
release of an already unstable mass that will flow over more or less
sophisticated terrain due to gravity. The termination of the propagation
will result from how and where the dissipation occurred.
Another notable aspect of the work is the fact that all simulations
are deterministic. Indeed, we believe that the explicit consideration of
geometries (for both the blocks and the terrain) eliminates the need for
using some stochastic inputs typically used in rockfall simulations. For
example, the explicit use of a complex shape will naturally involve a
statistical distribution of the deviation angles after a block collision on a
slope; the rate of energy dissipation will also obey a certain distribution
as a function of the configuration of collision (in particular, the angular

velocity and position of the block relative to the slope) with no need to
explicitly define this distribution. Once again, the role of geometry is
shown to be decisive and the bias is to say that “an accurate geometry is
better than lots of parameters”.
The authors would like to insist upon one point very strongly: the
studies presented in the book result from the work of several key
players – so-called co-workers – who are colleagues or students. The
names of these co-workers have been mentioned at the beginning of
the chapters where their work has been involved.

models [CRO 04, DOR 04, BOU 09a, CHR 07] used by the
stakeholders. In this way, it is possible to make a prediction on where
the blocks shall stop (zoning), their more probable paths, their
maximum height at a given position and so on.

For rockfall modeling, the geometry of the blocks has been chosen
so that it conforms the actual block shapes. The approach of
sphero-polyhedra (SP) has thus been adopted. In essence, the principle

To save memory and computing time, only the eigenvalues
extracted from the inertia matrix will be stored as I1∗ /m, I2∗ /m and
I3∗ /m. The vertex positions are expressed in the body framework given
by the eigenvectors of the inertia matrix, with the origin placed at the
mass center of the SP. The position and orientation of the latter is thus
defined.
The algorithm for the classical DEM involves two stages for each
rigid body i: (1) the computation of the resultant forces Fi and moment
Mi from volume and contact forces (see section 1.2.6); and (2) the
time integration of Newton’s second law (for translations) and Euler’s
equations (for rotations). This movement integration is performed by
means of the velocity Verlet scheme [ALL 89], which is a satisfactory
compromise between the accuracy of the block velocities (for both
translations and rotations) and memory saving.

developed mathematical background concerning quaternions, but all
this knowledge is not absolutely necessary when dealing with
rotations.

sinervien järvien rannoilla he palavat ajatuksensa lauleloiksi ja
isännästä alkaen on nukkumassa.
ensin saada turvaan, varmaan turvaan…
Ja nyt se oli hänelle selvinnyt. Vielä nyt kun jaksaisi jonkun viikon
viettää tätä valhe-elämää! Kun vielä kaikki onnistuisi eikä Aapelin
epäluulo enenisi! Kohta, kohta tulee otollinen hetki!
