Why I Wrote the Book
Introduction to Counseling: An Art and Science Perspective is designed for undergraduate and graduate courses
such as Introduction to Counseling and Professional Issues in Counseling. My experience with the book has
been that it can be used successfully with students who are majoring in the helping professions and with
nonmajors. I wrote this book from the perspective that counseling concepts can be useful to address daily
challenges of living (e.g., attempting to understand and appreciate individual differences and not overreact to
life events). I get excited when I share these ideas with students, because I am convinced they can make a
significant difference in terms of expanding worldviews and finding personal meaning in life.
24
Encouraging Feedback and Uses of Book
Introduction to Counseling: An Art and Science Perspective has been used in a variety of settings and formats with
overall positive feedback (e.g., “very readable and personal, like the book is talking to me, not lecturing to
me”). The book has been used in colleges and universities across the United States and in other countries and
has been translated into Chinese. There is also a sound version for people who are blind or dyslexic, and a
Braille version.
I have used this book with large undergraduate classes (around 100 students) and with smaller graduate-level
classes (e.g., professional issues courses associated with our CACREP-accredited mental health counseling
program at New Mexico State University). The book has been used in different formats—WebCT and on-
campus classroom. I have been pleased with the positive feedback instructors have given me regarding
WebCT use (they tell me students really like the book). This feedback is especially important to me, because
in WebCT the textbook provides a major role in the class (e.g., it covers information normally presented to
students in lecture format).

minun veljenpoikani tulee vahingoittumattomana takaisin matkaltaan.
Te olette hämmästyneen näköisiä. Te ette käsitä asiaa, arvelen minä,
jollen kerro teille tarinaa.
No, minun isäni oli merkillinen mies,
me menisimme merille yksi kerrallaan tarkasti noudattaen
