there is no substitute for the testimony of its participants, and these essays
show them working out questions that remain central today, often suggest-
ing avenues of approach that are well worth exploring afresh.
The opening part, “Origins,” gives foundational statements from
the turn of the nineteenth century up through the start of the twentieth. The
initial four selections represent the first stirrings of organized reflection on
the problems and possibilities of comparative literary study, not yet enshrined
in any academic disciplinary setting. Johann Gottfried Herder—philosopher,
pastor, poet, and essayist of humble origins and immense ambition—and
Anne Louise Germaine de Staël-Holstein, aristocratic traveler and woman
of letters, each look at modern literature in comparison to the classics, their
views interestingly inflected by their national situation, class position, and
gender. In Goethe’s conversations with his young disciple Eckermann, we
see a major writer reflecting on Germany’s place—and his own—in an in-
creasingly international literary world. These writers’ counterpointings
of classicism and modernity fi nd explosive echoes in the selections from
Nietzsche’s Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music, written as he was about
to abandon academic life as a classicist. All four writers accept the nation-
state as the dominant social form in which literature is written and read,
yet each uses comparative study to press back against nationalism and to
address fundamental concerns in contemporary culture at large.
The next four essays, by Meltzl, Posnett, Brandes, and Gayley, give
programmatic statements by pivotal figures in the first generation of aca-
demic comparative study, exemplifying the work of the creative scholars
who established the first programs and journals of comparative literature
in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. If comparative literature
began largely as a Franco-German enterprise, this group of writers displays
a much more varied outlook. Professors in, respectively, Transylvania,
Ireland/New Zealand, Denmark/Germany, and the United States, they were
fully alive to the tensions between “major” and “minor” literatures, and
they took full advantage of the possibilities opened up by the transnation-
alism of their day.
Principal founder of the fi rst journal of comparative literature,
Meltzl assembled an editorial board from around the world and listed ten
official languages for his journal, insisting on “the principle of polyglot-
tism” as crucial for any meaningful comparative work. Hutcheson Macau-
lay Posnett, by contrast, worked as readily with translations as with origi-
nal texts, a choice that enabled him to give substantial space to Chinese,
Sanskrit, and Arabic literatures in addition to works written in the several
languages he could read. The Danish critic Georg Brandes and the American

Charles Mills Gayley used studies of the European literary “great powers”
as means to challenge the provincialism of their local cultures. Similar in
some respects, these four differed greatly in their methods. Brandes devoted
himself to analyzing the literatures of a few European countries, while
Posnett read an astonishingly wide range of material as he wrote his book
before moving from Dublin to take up a professorship in Auckland. Meltzl
and Gayley, on the other hand, emphasized the need for collaborative work
as the only responsible way for comparatists to combine the needed depth
and breadth of study—a call that remains too little heeded to this day.
Part 2, “The Years of Crisis,” looks at the reshaping of the disci-
pline during the period from the First World War through World War II
and its aftermath in the 1950s. These essays are profoundly marked by the
global upheavals associated with the two world wars and the acceleration
of economic and cultural exchanges during these decades. Georg Lukács
formulated his immensely influential Theory of the Novel (1916) amid the
tensions of wartime Germany, a period of crisis that led him to reassess the
relations of modern literature to its ancient antecedents; Kobayashi Hideo’s
“Chaos in the Literary World” discusses the challenges facing post–Meiji
era writers and critics as they strove to relate to foreign models without
abandoning their classical traditions outright. Writing in internal exile in
Stalin’s Soviet Union, Mikhail Bakhtin reworked Lukács’s analysis of epic
and novel to celebrate the novel as the quintessential modern—and anti-
authoritarian—genre.
The selections that follow Bakhtin show ways in which World War
II raised the stakes of comparative study. Ernst Robert Curtius writes that
he began his career as a comparatist in the aftermath of World War I, work-
ing on modern literature in the hope of promoting greater cultural under-
standing between the recently combatant nations. With the rise of the Nazis
and the approach of the Second World War, Curtius determined to go
farther back in time, and he spent the war years studying medieval Latin
literature in order to recover a viable European heritage. Erich Auerbach,
meanwhile, spent the war in exile in Istanbul; there he wrote his master-
work Mimesis. After the war he emigrated to the United States, where he
wrote the essay included here, on the problem of world literature in an age
of growing cultural consolidation in the postwar years.
Further meditations on literature and politics are provided by the
next two authors. While Auerbach was writing Mimesis in Istanbul, the phi-
losopher and cultural critic Theodor Adorno was living in exile in south-
ern California, a venue in some ways more foreign to him than Istanbul
was to Auerbach. In Minima Moralia Adorno used literature, philosophy,

and music to probe the complex engagement of art with modern capitalist
society. Octavio Paz’s “Poetry, Society, State” argues for the critical freedom
of artists from state control even as they necessarily address political and
social concerns. Writing from a perspective that is at once Mexican and
global, Paz discusses the stimulating challenge provided for Mexican writ-
ers by the double foreignness of the inherited traditions of Europe and of
the Aztecs.
The section concludes with a pair of essays that outline a key meth-
odological debate of the postwar period: the conflict between the “French
school” of comparatists (represented here by Jean-Marie Carré) and the new
“American school” dominated by émigrés such as Auerbach, Leo Spitzer, and
René Wellek. In “The Crisis of Comparative Literature,” Wellek denounces
what he sees as the French school’s narrow positivism. His aim is ethical as
much as methodological: he calls at his essay’s close for an expansive vision
of the unity of humanity expressed in the transnational and transhistorical
patterns of art.
Part 3, “The Theory Years,” focuses on the period when comparat-
ists played a key role in the elaboration and circulation of literary theory.
Theory had long figured in comparative study, as writers such as Lukács,
Bakhtin, and Wellek sought general principles on which to understand and
analyze works from differing countries and periods. Literary theory grew
in prominence during the 1960s, and many comparative literature pro-
grams became known as meeting-places for students and scholars of lit-
erary theory. Lukács and Bakhtin themselves were rediscovered by com-
paratists during the 1970s and 1980s and constantly discussed during this
period; after a lifetime of censorship and exile, Bakhtin first achieved inter-
national recognition only during these years. Even to sample the full range
of literary theory—from Russian formalism to Frankfurt School Marxism
to Lacanian psychoanalysis to feminist film theory and much more—would
require a large volume of its own. Presented here are eight notable examples
of work from this period, tracing certain lines of theoretical and disciplin-
ary inquiry that had major effects on the evolving shape of comparative
literature as a discipline.
Of particular importance for theory as practiced in comparative
literature from the late 1960s through the 1980s were the approaches broadly
known as structuralism, poststructuralism, and deconstruction, repre-
sented here by programmatic essays by four leading practitioners: Roland
Barthes and Julia Kristeva in France, and Paul de Man and Barbara John-
son in the United States. Among the most often cited of all twentieth-century
critics and theorists, Roland Barthes was not formally a comparatist or even

a professor of literature; he ranged widely over many modes of cultural pro-
duction, from advertisements and wrestling matches to history, philoso-
phy, photography, and literature. Trained in linguistics, Barthes found in
semiotics an organizing discourse that could serve as the basis for broad-
based cultural critique.
Having worked both with Barthes and with Jacques Lacan, the
Bulgarian/French theorist Julia Kristeva combined linguistics and psycho-
analysis to investigate the revolutionary potential of language. Her essay
“Women’s Time” explores “women” and “the nation” as socially constructed
categories, in a postructuralist challenge at once to authoritarian politics,
to essentialist feminism, and to masculinist psychoanalysis. Equally con-
cerned with language though far less sure of its revolutionary potential,
Paul de Man turned structuralism on its head in his essay “Semiology
and Rhetoric,” arguing that language always undermines the very claims
it appears to underwrite. For de Man, literature achieves a privileged place
as the one discourse that fully admits its deconstructive force—a view that
can be interestingly compared to Adorno’s more directly political framing
of art as “magic delivered from the lie of being truth.”
The insights of structuralism and deconstruction were often devel-
oped in the United States in less political and more formalist terms than
in France, but in the 1980s American theory increasingly began to turn
outward from the text, often drawing on the work of Kristeva and Michel
Foucault in France and Adorno and other members of the Frankfurt School
in Germany. A notable index of this shift in the United States is the career
of Barbara Johnson, who began as a de Manian rhetorician but then started
exploring socially as well as linguistically constructed rhetorics of differ-
ence, focusing especially on African American studies and women’s stud-
ies. Included here is her retrospective essay “Writing,” which looks back at
the rhetorical criticism of the 1970s and carries forward to discuss French
feminism and then African American writing.
During the 1980s, poststructuralist theory became a resource for
many comparatists deeply concerned with issues of cultural difference in
a world of unequal power relations. Writing in small, “peripheral” coun-
tries, the Israeli Itamar Even-Zohar and the Martinican Édouard Glissant
explored issues of language and of translation in a global, post- or neo-
imperial world. Even as Paul de Man was arguing for close rhetorical study
of literary works free from direct social referent, Even-Zohar and Glissant
were demonstrating the importance of understanding any poetics in its cul-
tural framing; both attend closely to relations between major powers and
smaller countries in the formation of any national literature. In the United

States, the Palestinian émigré Edward Said helped inaugurate a major shift
of attention in his pathbreaking Orientalism and in the essays collected in
The World, the Text, and the Critic, whose title essay is included here.
Meanwhile, writing out of quite different colonial and postcolonial
experiences, Ngũgı̃ wa Thiong’o was thinking institutionally as well as
ideologically about literary studies, wrestling with issues of multilingual-
ism at home and the complex influence of British literature in the educa-
tional systems set up in the colonial era. In the section given here from his
book Decolonising the Mind, Ngũgı̃ brings postcolonial insights to bear on
issues of disciplinary formation and pedagogy, discussing the struggle that
he and other Kenyan faculty waged to gain a place for African literatures
within their English-dominated curriculum.
Part 4, “Contemporary Explorations,” concludes the volume by
taking up the tension between the global and the local in the context of
contemporary globalization. In “Comparative Cosmopolitanism,” Bruce
Robbins explores modes of interrelation that can foster a cosmopolitan
perspective that does not simply project hegemonic Western values around
the world. In terms that relate interestingly to Adorno and Paz, Pascale
Casanova argues for a qualified autonomy of “the world republic of let-
ters,” which she sees as a system that stands outside state power while cre-
ating its own means by which writers from peripheral regions negotiate
the unequal power relations between their national traditions and power-
ful metropolitan centers such as Paris. Zhou Xiaoyi and Q. S. Tong discuss
the explosive growth of Comparative Literature in China as a response to
the advent of global modernity; they argue for the need to move beyond
mere assimilation to Western norms on the one hand and a defensive lo-
calism on the other.
Global border crossings concern all of the remaining writers in
the book. The translation theorist Lawrence Venuti considers ways in which
translation mediates between cultures, often with problematic effects but
ultimately in the utopian hope of creating a community alive to cultural
difference. Gayatri Spivak’s “Crossing Borders” extends the discussion of
literary border-crossing to the space of academic institutions and human
rights intervention, proposing a fruitful interrelation of comparative lit-
erature and area studies while arguing for the importance of imagination
in cross-cultural engagement. Like Pascale Casanova, Franco Moretti sees
contemporary literature in terms of a world system that is “one, but un-
equal.” Revisiting Goethe’s concept of Weltliteratur in light of world systems
theory, Moretti renews Charles Mills Gayley’s call for a scientific study of
literature, looking at the interplay of literary form and social networks of

creation, distribution, and reception. Finally, Emily Apter’s manifesto “A
New Comparative Literature” combines themes seen in Glissant, Said, Venuti,
Moretti, and Spivak to argue for a comparatism based in ideas of creoliza-
tion and differential translation.
For each essay, an introduction situates the selection within the
writer’s life and work. Endnotes identify key literary and historical refer-
ences. In the interest of keeping the notes (and the volume’s size) within
reasonable bounds, we have not annotated every scholar or work mentioned
in passing in an essay, but we have tried to identify any name or source that
is directly discussed or for which information is needed for an understand-
ing of the argument. Those who wish to go further into an essayist’s work
and the issues it raises will find guidance in the bibliographies at the end
of the volume; the listings provide a sampling of important works by our
authors and the most interesting discussions of them.
In making our selections, we have benefited from recommenda-
tions by the several readers for Princeton University Press who read our
initial proposal or the first draft of the full volume. From the beginning,
we were aided by consultations with the membership of the American Com-
parative Literature Association. Several of our selections come from these
