Anya on the move!

When I was a child, my parents used to take us to the same places on vacation, year after year. After I left
home, I’d dream about traveling abroad, visiting exotic countries, going to a different place on each trip, but,
somehow, I never did. Now I’ve decided it is time to change all this – and to share my new adventures with
you. Welcome to my new blog!

Nepal

Posted June 13th

Day 1

After surviving an endless flight, Mark and I arrived, tired and dirty, at Kathmandu Airport late at night.
We just wanted to get to our hotel and go to bed, but the way there ended up being a little more complex.
The airport was packed with people, and we had to wait for nearly an hour for our luggage. Looking for a
taxi wasn’t less frustrating. There were so many cars and people that it was tricky to see where the taxis were.
When we finally got to the hotel, we couldn’t take it anymore – after a quick shower, it was time for bed.

Day 2

We had a wonderful night’s sleep, but we woke up to some horrible noises. Our hotel is this beautiful,
enormous, historic building, which was sadly a little damaged in the earthquake of 2015. Even now they are
still rebuilding parts of it, and it looks like slow progress – and a lot of loud noises in the morning.

But we also experienced our first Nepalese breakfast: plates of fruit, eggs, and several other dishes that
looked a little mysterious. But the smells coming from every shiny dish was delicious and we enjoyed every
little bit of the food!

After breakfast, we went out in search of a taxi again. This one took us through the streets of Kathmandu,
driving through crowds of people, animals and thick dust everywhere. And then, once we had left the city, we
went through this spectacular scenery of wide valleys and huge mountains, on the way to Bhaktapur. That is
when I realized I had underestimated just how awesome the rest of the world can be!

EVOLVE LEVEL 5, Unit Quiz 1A Audio Script
Julia: Hi, my name is Julia. I’ve had some bad experiences in life, and I think that has made me a little cautious
about making changes. I used to think that I could cope with change well, but then I realized that has
not always been true. For example, when I went away to college, I was very nervous about meeting
people. In fact, I wasn’t really prepared for the experience, or ready to tackle college life and socializing.
Eventually, I got a grip and forced myself to join clubs and talk to new people. It worked in the end, but
it was a slow and painful process …
Sam: Hi, my name is Sam, and I can understand Julia’s situation. I used to be very shy and frightened of
changes, but now I really make an effort to change my life in positive ways. For example, every month
I try to achieve new things. At the beginning of the month, I make a list of things I want to improve or be
able to do. Then, every day, I write notes in a diary to ensure I’m making progress. The process is still a
bit tricky for me, but I think it has been a big step forward.
Max: Hi, I’m Max. I love change! I think that life is too short and it would be a waste of time not to try new
experiences. There are so many new opportunities all the time! Just imagine how frustrating our lives
would be without change! In fact, I just started this challenge with my friends called “Do something
new every week”. Basically, we think of things we want to change or try in our lives, like change our look
or try some new food. Then, every week, we choose one thing and just do it. Anyone who doesn’t is out
of the challenge. So far, everyone has survived and we have realized how much we are all capable of.

F Read the email. Then read the statements and decide if they are True or False.

Hi Marianne!

I’m sorry I haven’t written earlier, but I’ve been so busy with the new job and adapting to life in Europe. I used
to think that I would adjust very easily to life abroad, but I realize now that I underestimated just how tricky
it would be. Everything is so different from home – from the type of food they eat, to the time they eat, to
the clothes they wear. And then, of course, there is the weather... Do you remember how I used to complain
about the weather at home? Well, you should see me here. It’s been cloudy every day since I arrived, and I’m
finding it hard to cope with the lack of sunshine.

I’m really enjoying the work, though. The team I work with is a great group of people and they’ve really
made me feel welcome here. The days tend to start later than at home, though, usually around 9.30 a.m. The
first few days, I welcomed being able to get up later as I was still suffering from the time difference and the
long-haul flight, but now it seems like a waste of time not starting earlier. I tend to work much better in the
morning than in the evening, but I guess I’ll survive!
I know that I should stop complaining and just get a grip. I didn’t come here for a vacation after all! And I
know that someday I’ll look back and be grateful for having had this opportunity. I guess that thinking about
you guys and life at home is making me feel a little homesick. Let me know how you’re doing, and I hope your
final exams went well last week.

Take care,

EVOLVE LEVEL 5, Unit Quiz 1B Mary: Audio Script
Hello, my name is Mary Johnson. I have traveled all over the world – for different reasons and in different situations.
And I think I have learned a few lessons about traveling, and I would like to share some of these with you today.

So, lesson number 1. I think the first lesson I learned is that, to really enjoy a trip, we shouldn’t be afraid of the
unknown. The whole point of traveling is to find out about new places and to experience different cultures. Traveling is
welcoming that new knowledge and accepting that there are a lot of things out there for us to learn.

That doesn’t mean, however, that you shouldn’t prepare a little for your trip. I always do some research on the place
I’m traveling to before I go. I tend to check tourism sites, travel blogs, and even guidebooks. But something I learned –
and I guess this is lesson number 2 – is that you should use their information just as inspiration and always adapt their
suggestions into your own personalized routes. Every trip should always be a personal journey.

And … lesson number 3. Pack lightly. Take with you half of what you think you need. On my first trips, I would always
take these heavy bags, even when traveling for just a few days. Now, my luggage is much lighter because I learned that
I can always buy things along the way or wash my clothes at hotels – and that it just drives me crazy to carry clumsy
heavy bags around.

And I think lesson number 4 is … travel slowly. Don’t hurry. Even if you are traveling for work and have a busy schedule,
take some time to just look around, enjoy the culture, and do things at a more relaxed pace than at home. If you can
survive a change of place, you can certainly survive a change of pace.

And, finally, lesson number 5. Don’t be shy, go and talk to the local people. Nowadays, even if you don’t know the local
language, there are great translation apps that can help you communicate. You will learn a lot more about the place
and sometimes even make some new friends and make your trip a much more special experience.

Some people are content to live in places with extreme temperatures; some prefer milder weather. What is
the weather like where you live? Are you happy with it? Or would you prefer to live somewhere else?

Nina Gomez | 2 hours ago

Most people seem to want to live in a hot climate, but I can tell you that there are many disadvantages. I
live in a tropical region, which means that the average temperature all year round is above 70F and that it’s
usually pretty hot and humid. This is why I’m much happier when I travel to areas where the temperatures are
lower and the climate is drier. You can get so much more done in such places!

Sally A | 3 hours ago

I live in Montreal and the weather here varies along the year – temperatures can go down to -14C in January
but reach 26C in July. For me, that is perfect, because I enjoy the variety and, above all, the different seasons.
My favorite is fall because of the colors and the feeling of change in the air. I also think that seasons affect
how we feel, and for me there is something about fall that makes me feel more alive.

Mark Beck | 4 hours ago

Where I live, the winters can be absolutely horrible! And I simply hate cold weather! I find that, during the
winter months, I don’t do very much. I basically stay at home and spend a lot of money on heating. While, in
the summer, I spend more time outside, see more people, play more sports – feel healthier and happier. If it
were possible, I’d live in a place with no winter and where the temperature never goes down to freezing!

Mathias Olsen | 5 hours ago

Well, sometimes the weather we choose is not a matter of preference, but of necessity. After all, the weather
can influence what we wear, what we eat, and even our health. Last year, I found out I had Seasonal Affective
Disorder (SAD). In Norway, where there is very little sunlight in the winter, this type of depression can affect
about 15% of the population. I felt tired a lot and had difficulty concentrating, so I decided that the best
solution was to move to a sunnier place.

1 The percentage of Norwegian people with the problem described in the text is .
2 In the summer, according to the text, the temperature in Montreal can go up to .
3 out of the four people who posted comments seemed happy with the local climate.

EVOLVE LEVEL 5, Unit Quiz 2A Audio Script
Interviewer: Hello and welcome. The topic this week is helping others, and today we have Alan Bart with us to tell us
about a different type of vacation.
So, Alan, could you tell us what you did last summer?
Alan: Well, I graduated from law school last June, and I was starting a job in the fall. So I had planned to spend
the summer on the beach with three friends from college. But then, for different reasons, my friends’
plans changed, and they couldn’t go with me anymore. That was when I decided that I’d prefer to travel
alone rather than staying home the whole summer.
Interviewer: OK, so you decided to travel solo?
Alan: Yes. I’ve always been interested in doing things to help the environment, so I decided to look for marine
conservation projects, for some kind of volunteer work taking care of sea life. I suppose because I’ve
always loved the ocean too!
Interviewer: So, you decided to do something to help animals then?
Alan: Correct. I found some great projects, such as one in Costa Rica that tries to protect endangered sea
turtles, and another, in Belize, that monitors whale sharks – which are an endangered species, too.
Interviewer: They sound like very interesting projects. Which one did you choose?
Alan: I chose to work with the whale sharks in Belize.
Interviewer: Did you see many of them?
Alan: Not really. First, because there are fewer of these sharks nowadays, mainly because of overfishing and
sea pollution. But, also, because the whale sharks usually come to the waters in Belize between March
and June. During the other months, it’s more difficult to come across them in that area.
Interviewer: Oh … Were you disappointed?
Alan: A little, but the work was absolutely fascinating, and I met some really wonderful people. So it was a
fantastic summer in the end.
Interviewer: And would you recommend this type of vacation to other people?
Alan: Absolutely! I think it was one of the most satisfying and productive vacations I’ve ever had!

Balinese Cooking School

Although Bali isn’t one of the five largest islands of Indonesia, it is one of the most popular with visitors from
all over the world. Most of you already know about our fabulous beaches or our most active volcanoes, but
few are aware of the rich flavors of our exciting cuisine.
Come to the Balinese Cooking School to learn more about it and explore some of the other unique resources
of our wonderful island!

Where are we?

We are located about 5 km outside Ubud, which is one of the main cities in Bali. The school is in an area
extremely popular among walkers, as it is surrounded by peaceful rice fields and beautiful, lush green trees.
Since there is no public transportation to our school, we offer a bus service that can pick up students at the
major hotels. Just provide us with the name of your hotel when you make the reservation.
What is the program?
• After the hotel pick-up at 7 a.m., we will go directly to one of the local markets. The locals in Bali shop early
in the morning, and this is the best time to select good-quality, fresh ingredients and to taste and smell
an astonishing variety of fruits and vegetables. The market is a fascinating experience and we guarantee it
will be one of your most delicious memories!
• We will take you from the market to the school and, after a typical local breakfast of Balinese cakes, fried
bananas, and other fresh fruit, you will be ready to begin the cooking classes.
• From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., you will learn to cook a complete menu of about ten different dishes using
noodles, rice, chicken, fish and, of course, lots of fresh vegetables. Working together in small groups of five
people, you will receive individualized attention and useful tips.
• After that comes one of the best parts of our program: sitting together to enjoy the delicious food you
prepared while listening to traditional Balinese music!

1 What does the text say about Balinese cooking?

A It is completely unknown.
B Not many foreigners know about it.
C You can eat Balinese food on the main islands of Indonesia.
2 How do people get to the cooking school?
A Walking from Ubud.
B By public transportation.
C On transportation run by the culinary school.
3 According to the text, when do students get to the market?
A Before they start cooking.
B Before seven o’clock in the morning.
C After they have had breakfast at the school.
4 What is not included in the program?
A Sharing two meals at the school.
B Lessons on Balinese cooking tools.
C Experiencing other cultural traditions of Bali.
5 How many dishes will the students prepare?
A An average of eleven dishes.
B More than a dozen.
C Between nine and eleven dishes.

Ruben: Hi, Jessica! Have you had time to look through the information on volunteer vacations?
Jessica: Hi there. Yes, I took a quick look, and they all seem pretty interesting. Should we go over them together
now and see if we can find one that we both like?
Ruben: Great idea. OK … here’s the page. So, which ones interested you the most?
Jessica: I think that one of the most interesting is the environmental conservation internship in Malawi. It looks
amazing. I’d love to do something to preserve the environment. You know, something which would
really help the planet.
Ruben: I agree it looks wonderful, but have you seen the price? It’s one of the most expensive. I mean, I know
that we would be doing a lot of good, but that really is too much for my budget. What about the wildlife
rescue center in Costa Rica instead?
Jessica: That was my second choice, actually. The only problem with it is that I’d really prefer to go to Africa
rather than staying in the Americas.
Ruben: But, Jess, they also work with endangered species. And the cost would be so much lower … Also, there
would be another advantage … I have family in Costa Rica, so we could probably stay with them for a
few days after the volunteer work, and then explore a little more. We could see some of the forests, the
volcanoes …
Jessica: Hmm … It does sound tempting, but I’m not sure … Were there any other projects that you particularly
liked?
Ruben: Well, you know how much I love sports. So, obviously, the one that I like best is the sports coaching in
Brazil. Just imagine teaching sports to kids in Rio!
Jessica: I can see that this would be ideal for you, but you know I don’t like sports much … Or wouldn’t be
capable of teaching any of them …
Ruben: Yes, I know. So … What about the Costa Rica one? That was my second option, too …

Not Given.

Dear Mrs. Newman,

I am writing to apply for an internship at the marketing department of Sunny Summer Camps.

As you can see from my résumé, I am currently majoring in Advertising and Marketing Communications. The
program includes courses on media planning, consumer behavior, and advertising and communications
strategy, which are taught by highly-respected marketing professionals and have provided me with both
valuable knowledge and many essential skills.

In addition to my marketing skills, I would also be able to offer your company some useful skills developed
in the field of sport education. While in high school, I had the opportunity to coach one of the local junior
soccer teams. The experience taught me some important lessons on how to interact and communicate with
both children and parents, which I believe could be of great value to your marketing department.

I could also bring with me some personal practical knowledge. I had the opportunity to go to different
summer camps as a child and a teenager, and I can still remember what made each camp either a fabulous
experience or a very bizarre one. It would be an honor to share my views with you and help make your
customers’ experience even more satisfying.

I would be available to work full-time from early June to late August and once a week from September on. I
would also be able to work on some weekends if necessary.

I hope you will consider my application and give me the opportunity of an interview, when we could further
discuss my experience and skills and how these could be of help for your company.

Sincerely,

Brad West

EVOLVE LEVEL 5, Unit Quiz 3A Audio Script
Presenter: Welcome to our annual Career Week. Today, I’d like to introduce you to our first speaker, Jon Baker. Jon
is a very experienced career counselor and the director of our university career center. He’s here today
to tell you more about the center and how we can help you.
Jon: Good afternoon, everyone. Over the years, I’ve met thousands of students like you, and one thing
I’ve learned is that this is one of the most exciting times in your life. Just think about it: you have
everything ahead of you and so many options to choose from! I know … The process of deciding what
you want to work with, writing personal statements, applying for jobs, going through interviews can
sometimes make you tense and uneasy. But it doesn’t need to. So, how can we help you make this
process more satisfying and successful?
First of all, I would like to remind you that you don’t need to go through the process alone. At the
center, we can advise you about your career choices, help you prepare your résumé, let you know about
potential jobs and internships, and even help you practice for interviews. Just check out our website for
the services we offer and make an appointment to talk to us.
Before you talk to us, though, you might want to start thinking about yourself. Think about what you
are interested in doing in the future, but also what you are like and what you usually enjoy doing now.
Maybe you are thinking about becoming a lawyer, but you also know that you are a more reserved,
introverted person, who is not necessarily the life of the party, but who can speak up when necessary.
This might help you decide later if you really want to be a lawyer and, if you do, what type of lawyer you
would like to be.
You should also give some thought to the knowledge, talents, and skills you have. What are some of
the subjects you know a lot about? Which do you feel like exploring further? What things do you do
particularly well? Which would you be happy to use every day?
Then, once you have listed all this information, I would suggest you use it to answer the questionnaire
available on our website. This would provide us with a basic profile we can discuss at our first meeting
and already show some potential career directions you might want to explore.

Finally, when you come to see us …

Anna: Thank you.
Peter: Well, as you know, this is a part-time position, and the hours are all day Friday and Saturday.
I understand you are available on those days.
Anna: Yes, I am.
Peter: Good. Now, I can see from your résumé that you are studying interior design at the Art and Design
Institute. Can you tell me what you like about interior design?
Anna: Well, I’ve been interested in design from a young age. I’ve always loved mixing together different
materials, colors, and styles. I find it very satisfying to think about a space and combine all the different
elements in order to create a harmonious room. I really enjoy designing a place that will make people
feel happy.
Peter: That’s perfect. One of your main jobs would be to help the designers prepare and present the mood
boards. You know, the boards with our suggestions for colors, objects, and styles that show a client our
ideas for the project.
Anna: Oh, that would be fabulous! I have a lot of experience in creating mood boards.
Peter: I thought so. Now, you would also have to interact with some of the clients. How would you feel
about that?
Anna: I would really enjoy that. I consider myself an extrovert, and I love socializing and meeting new people.
That’s another aspect of the profession that really interests me.
Peter: Good to hear that. Now, Anna, what made you interested in working with us at Smart Interior Design?
Anna: I’ve always admired your work. Since the first time I saw some of the stunning projects on your webpage,
I thought I would really enjoy working here. Also, several of your designers have won awards and are

Working Blog

Jobs have changed greatly over the years and, as a consequence, the way we work has changed as well. Here are
two successful stories sent by readers who have broken away from the traditional working situation. I hope they can
inspire those of you who are looking for new directions in your work life.

Natalia Gomez, accountant, on job-sharing

I’m an accountant and I’ve been job-sharing for the last six months. I used to work full-time and, although I
enjoyed my job, I used to work very long hours. About a year ago, I got sick and was advised by my doctor to
take some time off work to recover. So I went on vacation and had time to assess my situation. Working long
hours was so stressful that it was damaging my health. I turned to my boss, and she was very understanding
and suggested that I could job-share. So I contacted my friend Luke, who is also an accountant and was
looking for a job. Now, Luke and I job-share, and it’s going very well! Just the perfect work-life balance!

Tyler Hall, editor, on freelancing and co-working spaces

I am an editor and I work on projects for magazines, websites, and advertising agencies. I used to work on a
team at a large book publishing company. I enjoyed the work, but I wanted to have more independence, to
choose the types of projects I worked on, and to do more varied work. So I left my job and set myself up as a
freelance editor. After working alone for a month, though, I realized that I really missed other people and I felt
very isolated and lonely. Then someone mentioned a co-working space downtown. The place is a large office
space, especially for freelancers, divided up into smaller offices and meeting rooms. The rent we pay every
month covers our desk space and bills such as electricity and cleaning. It is just the ideal situation for me: I can
work independently and, at the same time, enjoy the company of others.

1 The blog writer’s attitude toward Natalia and Tyler’s stories is a positive one. T / F / NG
2 Natalia now works fewer hours than she used to a year ago. T / F / NG
3 Natalia’s main reason to job-share was to help her friend Luke. T / F / NG
4 Tyler decided to become a freelancer because he wanted to work alone. T / F / NG
5 Tyler is now a co-worker of the person who recommended the new office space. T / F / NG

Rachel: Adrian, this is your first job performance review at our company, correct?
Adrian: Yes.
Rachel: OK. In this review, we would just like to talk about some of the aspects of your job, things that went well
this past year and things that might need some improvement. So, what about starting with the good
things? Could you tell me what you think is one of your main strengths as a manager?
Adrian: Well, I believe that one thing I’m fairly good at is helping build a good relationship between the
members of my team.
Rachel: How do you think you do that?
Adrian: First, I try to make sure everyone feels they are equals, that no member is better or worse than the
others. I also try to make it clear that each of them has something to contribute – and I believe I always
enable them to do so: to offer their ideas and their views on every project we work on.
Rachel: Those are good strategies. Do you think they have helped your team’s performance this year?
Adrian: I believe so. When I started working with this team, the relationship between some members was
not the best. Some, for example, had a very destructive attitude and were not capable of giving
constructive feedback on each other’s work or helping one another with their problems. This has all
changed, and the relationship is much more friendly and productive now.
Rachel: Yes, I noticed that too. I was really pleased to see how you managed to steer the team toward a much
more positive direction. Congratulations on the good work.
Adrian: Thank you.
Rachel: And which would you say is your main weakness as a manager?
Adrian: Um … I think one of my problems is that I tend to take on too much work, too many responsibilities.
I need to find a way to do my job well without feeling that I have to oversee a dozen projects at the
same time.
Rachel: I’m glad you brought that up. I have also felt that your workload seems a little unreasonable. Do you
think some members of your team could take on some of these responsibilities or, at least, assist you
with some of your tasks?
Adrian: Hmm … That’s certainly a possibility.
Rachel: Good … So, why don’t you think it through and let us know who could help you with some of your
work?
Adrian: OK. I’ll do that.
Rachel: Now, in relation to your projects for the next year …

F Read the article. Then read the questions below and choose the correct answer.

Team building activities

Being a manager is so much more than just being there in the office every day with your team. You also need
to motivate, build trust, and give support. A very effective way of making the relationship with and among
your employees much better is to use team-building activities. Here are some that have worked extremely
well for my teams.

Ice sculpting
Ice sculpting can be a fantastic way of encouraging your team to plan together, be creative, and work fast.
The session starts with some experts demonstrating how to make an ice sculpture. They then assist your
team to create their own design and to think through every aspect of the sculpture before they begin. The
challenge is then putting the plan into action before that ice melts!

Flash mobbing
This is a great choice if you are looking for a fun and energetic activity to improve your employee’s
confidence in themselves and in one another. In small groups, they memorize and practice a dance routine
to music. When they are ready, the whole team goes out into the streets or a shopping mall to perform their
dance to the public. You will be surprised by how confidently some will show off their talents …

Escape rooms
One of the main benefits of escape rooms is that they force people to communicate and think creatively in
order to solve a common problem. In groups, people follow a series of clues in order to escape from a room.
They have to listen to each other’s suggestions and discuss every decision as a team. I promise you: the team
that leaves that room will not be the same that went into it.

1 What is the main purpose of the article?

A To give employees ideas of activities they can do after work.
B To suggest to managers ways of improving working relationships.
C To inform companies of activities happening in their area.
2 What’s the writer’s attitude toward the three activities mentioned?
A very pleased
B a little frustrated
C extremely curious
3 Why does the writer think that ice sculpting might be helpful?
A Because people always enjoy being creative.
B Because the teams are supported by their managers.
C Because people will work creatively and quickly as a team.
4 What is one of the main benefits of flash mobbing, according to the writer?
A People might start trusting their coworkers more.
B People will exercise and have more energy for work.
C People will use their creative and artistic skills.
5 According to the writer, what does not happen in the escape room activity?
A Team members have to talk to one another.
B Teams need to make decisions together.
C People usually find the solution on their own.

Sonia: Hi, Michael. Can I talk to you for a minute?
Michael: Sure. Anything wrong, Sonia?
Sonia: Well, kind of. I think I have taken on too many projects this month. And I’ve been spending so much
time on some of them that I’m starting to fear that I won’t be able to finish any of them by the deadline.
Even if I continue to work longer hours.
Michael: Hmm. Is there any way the team can help you? Maybe some of us could take on some of your projects,
for example. Would that enable you to concentrate on the more complex ones and finish them all on
time?
Sonia: That would certainly help a lot.
Michael: OK. So, what about having a meeting about this with the others tomorrow? We could then assess the
situation together, decide who can help with each project, and see if we can assist you in any other way.
The team might even be able to contribute with suggestions or solutions to some of the problems you
are having with the more complicated projects.
Sonia: Oh, that would be fantastic. Thank you so much, Michael. I knew I could turn to you for help.
Michael: Anytime, Sonia. After all, it’s my responsibility to oversee this team and make sure everyone is making
the best use of their strengths and not working unreasonable hours.
Sonia: And you do that very well, Michael. We are really lucky to work with you.
Michael: And I’m lucky to work with you all. Now, do you think you could reserve the meeting room and tell
everyone about the meeting?

Community projects
Your time, skills, and money can be essential tools for tackling the challenges faced by your neighborhood.
Getting involved in a community project can be highly satisfying and an effective way to solve local problems
or work for causes you are passionate about.

If you are eager to find a local project to get involved in, there are lots of places where you can get information.
Check out websites for voluntary work, community discussion boards, neighborhood blogs, or even just ask
around your community. However, if you are prepared to start your own project, here are a few ideas.

Food drives
A food drive is a way of encouraging local people to work together for a good cause. First, you might need to
get access to a large space, which will make things easier when collecting a substantial amount of food. Then,
with just some advertising at local stores, schools, and organizations and with the help of some volunteers,
you will be greatly assisting your local food banks or shelters.

Playgrounds
Building a playground for the local children can be another way of improving your community. The
construction needs to be carefully planned: from finding and gaining permission to use a piece of public land
to deciding on the equipment needed. You can either raise funds to buy the equipment or have volunteers
build it with donated materials or even recycled products, such as tires.

Beach cleanups
If you are lucky enough to live in an area near a lake or the ocean, you will probably be conscious of how
important a beach can be for the local community. You will also know that beaches often tend to get dirty.
One way you can help with that is by organizing groups to clean the beaches and recycle the garbage left on
it or washed up from the ocean.

1 The best way to find out about community projects is by talking to neighbors. T / F / NG
2 The writer suggests finding somewhere to store the donations in a food drive. T / F / NG
3 The first step to building a playground is selecting the equipment. T / F / NG
4 The equipment for the playground can be bought or built. T / F / NG
5 The most effective way of cleaning beaches is by using small groups of people. T / F / NG

Customer: Hmm… Good question. I really don’t know. I hadn’t thought about that. Do you think it makes a

Salesperson: Well, some of the newer ones only have USB-C ports. Generally they’re a bit slimmer.
Customer: A slimmer machine does sound nice…
Salesperson: They are nice, but, you know, if you’re really using it to take to clients offices that’s not going to be the

Relax!
Anxiety and worry can cause problems such as insomnia, tiredness, and an inability to concentrate. If you are
constantly anxious and unable to relax, you should seek professional advice. If, however, your anxiety level
only rises on certain occasions, such as before an important meeting or exam, relax. Here are some simple
self-help techniques which can ease your worries.

1 Schedule “worry time”

Worrying about things that may never happen or that we can’t control can be a huge waste of time. Don’t let
concerns get into your thoughts and rob you of time you could be thinking about issues you can actually do
something about. Scheduling a time to worry every day can be a way of limiting how much you worry about
things. Choose a set time and stick to it. 20-30 minutes a day should be enough.

2 Practice breathing
Learning how to breathe well and to control our breathing can be much more complex than we imagine.
However, practice can help us gain control of our breathing – and this will reduce stress and relax your body
and mind.

3 Keep a diary of thoughts

If you write down how you feel when you are worried or stressed, you might be able to identify potentially
irrational, unreasonable behavior or thinking. Writing down your thoughts and emotions can help you find
out why you feel this way, enabling you to recognize patterns of behavior, thoughts, and things that cause
your stress.

4 Cut down on screen time in the evening

Screen time can fill our brains with too much information, which doesn’t help us achieve a state of relaxation.
If you turn off all screens a few hours before going to bed, this allows your brain to gently relax and find peace.

1 The techniques suggested should only be used by people who worry too much. T / F / NG
2 One way of worrying less is actually controlling the time you spend worrying. T / F / NG
3 Breathing correctly may not be as simple as it seems. T / F / NG
4 Writing down our feelings can help us think in a more objective way. T / F / NG
5 We should all leave our mobile devices outside the bedroom. T / F / NG

Grace: Hi, Henry. How are you?
Henry: Oh hi, Grace. OK, I guess. Just a little tired. I haven’t been sleeping much these days.
Grace: Oh, are you still doing your exams?
Henry: No. I finished my exams a week ago, but I’m still not sleeping very well … Of course, when I was doing
the exams, I was anxious about them the whole time. But I thought that, once they were over, my
anxiety levels would go down and I’d be sleeping the whole night again …
Grace: Hmm … Is there anything else that’s worrying you now?
Henry: I don’t know … I guess now I’m worried about not having passed the exams … Some days I panic a
little. What if I did really poorly?
Grace: Oh, come on … You know that hasn’t happened. You are an excellent student! What I think you need is
to calm down. For example, have you ever tried doing something to relax before you go to sleep? Like
listening to calming music or drinking chamomile tea?
Henry: Never. But Matt told me about an app that he uses to go to sleep. It’s a kind of meditation app that
helps you relax. But I’m not sure … I’m a little reluctant to use it because I’ve never tried meditation, and
I don’t know if it would work for me.
Grace: Oh, you should try it! I sometimes use one of those. They usually include some breathing techniques,
which can be really helpful. It’s amazing how being conscious of your breathing can help you calm
down and relax.
Henry: Ha, I didn’t think you had any problems with that. You always seem like such a relaxed person …
Grace: Yeah, I guess you can say I’m usually a relaxed person. But life is not perfect, right? So sometimes I just
need something to help me calm down and regain control. And these apps can be quite effective. Here,
let me show you which one I use. I think there is a free version too.

F Read the story. Then read the statements and decide if the information is True,
False, or Not Given.

When I was younger, I used to audition for any type of role that would allow me to survive as an actor in New
York and give me more varied experience. So I was very happy when I was called to audition for a part in a TV
commercial. They paid relatively well and I had never worked in one.

Before the audition started, we had to answer a questionnaire. One of the questions was about all the types
of skills we had. Could we dance, sing, mime, tell jokes, etc.? They didn’t ask how well we could do these
things or tell us how much experience we should have, so I just checked all the boxes. After all, I had been
trained to do all of them at drama school, so I was not lying.

Then, when the audition was about to start, they announced that we would also have to sing a little, and
that they were giving us a few minutes to choose a song. Any song. I panicked. It was true that I had had
singing lessons at school, but it was also true that my reputation as a singer had been a pretty bad one. But
there was no way out, so I tried to be rational, calm down, and think of a simple song I could deliver in an
acceptable way.

Of course my performance was a disaster. And, although the acting part hadn’t been so bad, I lost all hope of
getting the job. So I won’t deny I was extremely surprised when they called a week later and offered me the
part! It turns out that the role in the commercial was that of a pretty bad singer, so they were actually looking
for someone who could act but not sing. Well, I don’t want to boast, but my singing in that commercial was
absolutely “perfect”.

Interviewer: Today we are doing our broadcast from a bookstore where Samantha Foster has been signing copies of
her latest novel. Good evening, Sam.
Sam: Good evening.
Interviewer: Sam, your latest book sold nearly 10,000 copies in the first week and has been highly praised by
reviewers. How does it feel to make the headlines?
Sam: Well, it all feels a little … bizarre, actually. I’ve never really sought fame with my writing, so I still can’t
believe this is all happening to me.
Interviewer: Oh, you certainly deserve it! In fact, several of our listeners are huge fans of your books. And some of
them even asked if you had any advice to someone who is trying to write a bestseller.
Sam: Well, I can’t claim to be an expert, but one thing I would say is: you need to be determined and work
hard. It’s not an easy task, so you have to be persistent and keep writing. I also think you need to treat it
as a job and write every day. You have to put in the hours if you want to succeed.
Interviewer: So, dear listeners, determination and hard work seem to be the secret. Sam, another listener asked how
you managed to have your first book published?
Sam: Ha! I would say that it was all because of my friend Nicola.
Interviewer: Huh … How come?
Sam: Well, uh … I’d been writing my first novel on and off for a couple of years, when I decided to show it to
Nicola. Nicola is not only a voracious reader – really, she will read anything you put in her hands – but
also a very honest critic. And she loved the book and insisted that I should send it to a literary agent
or a publisher. But I was really only writing for pleasure, so I completely ignored her advice and didn’t
do anything. But she did. Without my knowing, Nicola sent a few chapters to several publishers. I only
found out about that when I received an email from a publisher asking to read the rest of the book.
Interviewer: Wow. That must have been quite a pleasant surprise.
Sam: It certainly was.
Interviewer: Well, so I guess we have to thank Nicola as well for making it possible for us to read your wonderful
books!

F Read the story. Then read the questions and choose the correct answers.

Two years ago, my husband and I booked a vacation in Brazil. Leo and I had spent our honeymoon in Rio and
had had a wonderful time. So we wanted to go back to the same hotel as a special treat for my 40th birthday.

On the day we made the hotel reservation, we had dinner with a couple of good friends, Carl and Steph,
whom we had known since college. We mentioned the trip, and they thought it was a fantastic idea.
(Although Steph made me promise we would celebrate my birthday together at some point.) After all, she
reminded us, the date was very special for the four of us, as we had all met at my 20th birthday party.

A few months after this meal, Leo and I flew to Rio for our vacation. When we arrived at the hotel, we were
starving. So we went straight to our room to leave the suitcases and find a place to eat. When I opened the
door, I was pleasantly surprised. On the bed, there was this beautiful basket with tropical flowers and fruits,
and this card saying “Happy 20th anniversary!” There was also a note inside the card inviting us to dinner at
the restaurant by the swimming pool at 7 p.m.

Since it was not our wedding anniversary, I was definitely not 20, and Leo swore he had nothing to do with that,
we called the front desk. They confirmed we were in the right room and we thanked them for their generosity.
Leo also remembered that the word for birthday in Portuguese is “aniversário”, so we just concluded that the
staff had gotten the translation and my age slightly wrong. And it didn’t matter, really. Twenty or forty, for my
anniversary or my birthday, I was more than happy to enjoy those delicious mangoes and guavas.

We then went for a walk along the beach, unpacked, and got ready for the evening. At 7 p.m. we walked into
the restaurant and the biggest surprise of the day. Waiting for us, at this table with a wonderful view of the
ocean, were Steph and Carl. They had come to celebrate my 40th birthday and the 20 years of our friendship!

Eric: April? That’s pretty soon.
Tanya: I agree. But knowing Lauren, it will probably be a crazy event. She knows how to make things pretty

Eric: Hmm … I have my doubts about that. Mike is very traditional, so he’ll probably want a more
conventional wedding – you know, nothing crazy.
Tanya: Yeah … You’re probably right … I don’t think he would be happy with some of the weird weddings we
have been to.
Eric: Ha ha. Definitely not. Just imagine them having a wedding like the one I went to last year in San Diego

Tanya: Which one was that? I can’t remember.
Eric: The one we had to dress like superheroes.
Tanya: Oh, yeah! The one you and Amy to went as Batman and Catwoman. You know, I don’t think you ever
told me what the wedding was like in the end.
Eric: Oh, really? It was awesome. People were so creative! The variety of costumes was just incredible.
Tanya: Had they asked each guest to wear a specific costume? Or were you able to choose your own?
Eric: We chose our own, but we had to tell them in advance which one it was going to be. They said they
wanted to avoid too many similar costumes.
Tanya: Wow … They really wanted it to be an event.
Eric: Oh, yeah, they did. And I think everybody would agree that it was a very successful one. It even caught

Tanya: Really? Were you on TV?
Eric: Nah … I guess Batman and Catwoman were too … conventional for them …
