SOP: Vasoon Master of Professional Engineering (Mining Engineering)

Statement of Purpose

Introduction:

My name is Vasoon Rathikrinda, and my date of birth is June 28, 2002. I am a resident of Podili, Ongole, Andhra
Pradesh, India. I have enrolled in Curtin University to study for a Master of Professional Engineering (Mining
Engineering). I am writing this SOP to support my visa application.

Family Background

 Father's Name: Srinivasa Rao Rathikrinda

 Father's Profession: Government Teacher
 Mother's Name: Padmaja Jyothi
 Mother's Profession: Government Teacher
 Siblings: One younger sister, who is a student.

Educational Background:

I completed my SSC from Ongole in 2017. My aggregate Secondary School Certificate (SSC (10th)) score was 9.5
CGPA. I then finished my Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC (12 th)) in 2019 with an aggregate score of 9.73 CGPA,
specialising in MPC. After that, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Mining Engineering in 2019. I
graduated in 2023 from NIT Rourkela with an aggregate score of 7.23 CGPA.

Work Experience Details:

As part of the B.Tech program, I interned at Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) in June 2022. My role
involved gaining a practical understanding of mining operations, including machine operations, drilling, blasting, and
haulage techniques. This experience allowed me to comprehensively understand the mining process and its
complexities. In addition, during the years 2022-2023, I undertook a significant B.Tech project where I optimised coal
extraction from thick seams using Continuous Miner (CM) technology and caving methods. In this project, I
employed empirical methods to create ribs/snooks. I utilised CM to extract pillars from thick seams, enhancing the
efficiency and safety of the mining process.

Research for Higher Education Abroad

I received the offer for Master of Professional Engineering (Mining Engineering) from Curtin University on
September 5, 2023. The course is set to commence in Semester 1, 2024, with orientation week beginning on February
19, 2024. The course start date is February 26, 2024. The standard course duration is 2 years, to be pursued at the
university in full-time internal mode.

As for the financial details, the indicative first-year tuition fees amount to AU$ 42,446, with incidental fees of up to
AU$ 1,000. The total tuition fees, based on zero increments, are approximately AU$ 84,893. I paid the deposit of AU$
21,223, along with OSHC.

Reasons for choosing not to study in India:

1. Why not study in India? Pursuing a Master of Technology in Mining Engineering in India presents unique
challenges and considerations. The admission process to esteemed institutions like IITs and NITs is highly
competitive, necessitating success in rigorous entrance exams like GATE. This competitive landscape can be
daunting, particularly with limited seats and high academic standards.

Additionally, the curriculum in India heavily emphasises theoretical knowledge, focusing on semesters
punctuated by significant end-semester exams and culminating in a final project or internship. While this
provides a solid theoretical foundation, it might lack the continuous assessment, practical experience, and
flexibility in specialisation that some students seek in their postgraduate education.

2. Australia's Advantage over India Choosing Australia for my Master's in Mining Engineering is starkly
contrasted with India's education system. Australian universities emphasise practical, hands-on learning and
critical thinking, aligning with current industry needs. This approach nurtures my problem-solving skills and
independent thought, which are essential for my professional growth in mining engineering.

The diverse, global learning environment broadens my perspective, which is essential in this globally
interconnected field. Additionally, opportunities for part-time work and pathways to post-study work visas in
Australia offer me valuable industry exposure and career prospects. This practical experience and global
exposure are vital benefits that I wouldn't experience as profoundly in India's more theory-focused and
competitive educational landscape.

3. Challenges of getting admission to good Indian universities: Securing admission to a prestigious Indian
university, especially for a specialised program like Mining Engineering, presents significant challenges. The
process is highly competitive, with many applicants vying for limited seats in top-tier institutions such as IITs
and NITs. Rigorous entrance exams like GATE form a significant hurdle, requiring extensive preparation and
exceptional performance. Focusing on theoretical knowledge in entrance exams adds another layer of
difficulty. These challenges are compounded by the reservation system and intense academic pressure, making
pursuing a postgraduate degree in India daunting.

4. M.Tech in Mining Engineering in India: In researching the Master of Technology in Mining Engineering
program in India, I have comprehensively understood the educational landscape. I explored the two-year
course duration, recognising its balance of theoretical and practical elements.

My investigation highlighted the rigorous admissions process involving entrance exams like GATE and
PGCET, underscoring the competitiveness of securing a place in prestigious institutions such as IITs and
NITs. I also examined the financial aspects, understanding the differences in fees between public and private
colleges. Public colleges offer this program with costs ranging from a minimum of ₹49.15K to a maximum of
₹2.08 Lacks.

In comparison, private colleges range from ₹67K to ₹2.13L. Looking closer at the state level, for instance, in
Rajasthan, public colleges charge around ₹1.81L.
In contrast, private institutions charge slightly more, up to ₹1.82L. These figures not only informed my
understanding of the financial commitment required but also underscored the variability in cost between
different types of institutions and states within India.
