1. OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that ADIRAJ ENTERPRISES (WEL)
undertakes all Subgrade Construction activities related to Highway Construction in
accordance with the Civil Project specifications and applicable codes & standards.
2. APPLICABILITY
This procedure is applicable for Highway Project for all highway projects for
subgrade construction activities to be performed by WEL. The intent of this
procedure is to ensure that uniform understanding is established between all
persons involved in the project activities by WEL, Partners, Consultants and Client
during project execution to avoid or eliminate possible errors. This work shall
consist of laying, spreading and compacting Subgrade layer with approved
material in accordance with clause 305 of MORTH specification.

7 DESCRIPTION
7.1 EQUIPMENT:
As required from the list given below
1) Excavator
2) Tippers
3) Motor grader
4) Vibratory Roller (80-100 KN capacity)
5) Water Tankers
7.2 PROCEDURE
7.2.1 Material
As per clause 305.2 of MORTH, the material to be used for construction of
embankment shall be satisfying the following requirements.
1. The Particle size of the filling material shall not be more than 50 mm.
2. Free swell index of the material shall not be more than 50 percent when tested as
per IS: 2720 (Part-40).
3. Dry unit weight of the material shall not less than 1.75 gm/cc when tested as per
IS: 2720 (Part-8).
4. The values of maximum dry density and optimum moisture content shall be
obtained in accordance with IS: 2720 (Part 8).
5. Liquid limit shall not be more than 50 percent as per clause 305.2.1.1 of MORTH.
6. Plasticity index shall not be more than 25 percent as per 305.2.1.1 of MORTH.
7. The material to be used in sub grade should satisfy the requirement of the 4 day
soaked minimum CBR as per design requirement.
8. Roots and stumps shall be removed if any, while spreading.
9. Moisture content shall be checked before commencing the compaction, if it is less
than -2% of OMC, water shall be added by sprinkler and if it is more than +1% of
OMC, it shall be dried by aeration and exposure to the sun till it reaches the OMC.
10. Rolling shall be carried out from lower edge to upper edge with 80-100KN
vibratory roller till it achieves the required compaction and no visible tyre
impression or drum impression on the surface.
Suitable borrow area are identified field with detail location distance from site
chainages samples taken from the borrow area are tested for its suitability in
subgrade construction as per technical specification and clause No 903.2.1 The
testing of samples shall be carried out up to 1.5 m depth from ground level. The
number of samples shall be decided jointly or as per MORTH based on borrow area
volume.
1. Moisture content shall be checked before compaction for preceding the work.
2. The compacted surface shall be checked for field density at the frequency of 1
set of measurement per 2000 sq.m. The degree of compaction shall not be less
than 95%.
3. The surface shall be checked for levels at close intervals longitudinally and
transversely.
4. The compacted layer thickness shall not exceed 250mm
7.3.2 TRANSPORTATION
The material for Subgrade from the approved source of borrow areas will be
transported in dump truck (Tipper / Dumper) or in some cases by tractor trolley.
The filling of earth in Dumpers shall be done by excavators / JCB. The dumping of
materials shall be done systematically.
I. In the field one can estimate OMC without instrument just by adding water or
drying borrow material until a squeezed handful of soil is deformed with finger
marks for about an average squeeze effort and the molded soil resists breaking
apart.
II. Roots and stumps shall be removed at borrow area before loading.
III. The area where cracks are developed after compaction shall be harrowed and
compacted.
IV. The surface can be ensured that it has achieved required compaction by
continuing the rolling until there are no wavy or sponge action.
