MAS291--Assignment 02

Exercise 01/. Suppose that the cumulative distribution function of a continuous random
variable 𝑋 is

a) Compute 𝑃(𝑋 = 6);

b) Compute 𝑃(−2 < 𝑋 ≤ 17);
c) Determine the probability density function 𝑓;
d) Determine the mean and variance of 𝑋;
e) Find 𝐸(𝑋 4 ).

Exercise 02/. 4-110 (page 138, textbook)

Exercise 03/. Transportation officials tell us that 79% of drivers wear seat belts while driving.
Use normal distribution to approximate the probability that less than 803 drivers in a sample of
1050 drivers wear seat belts.

Exercise 04/. The monthly electrical utility bills of all customers for the Far East Power and Light
Company are known to be distributed as a normal distribution with mean equal to 90 dollars a month
and standard deviation of 37 dollars. If a statistical sample of 𝑛 = 145 customers is selected at
random:
a) What is the probability that the sample mean bill for those sampled will exceed 77 dollars?
b) What is the probability that the sample mean is between 75 and 82 dollars?

Exercise 05/. 7-10 (page 230, textbook)

Exercise 06/. An article in Technometrics (Vol. 19, 1977, p. 425) presented the following data
on the motor fuel octane ratings of several blends of gasoline:

a) Calculate the sample mean;

b) Calculate the median and quartiles 𝑄1 , 𝑄3 of these data;
c) What is the interquartile range?
d) What is the mode of these data;
e) Find the sample standard deviation;
f) Find the range of data;
g) Construct a stem-and-leaf display for these data.
