Dense granular soils or overconsolidated clays (Red). Dense granular soils or overconsolidated clays show strain-softening behaviour. Here, the failure can be defined in terms of "peak" or “residual” values. In clays, there can be a further drop in the stress-strain plot, before the residual state is reached. At peak, the soil carries the maximum possible stress; and at residual state, the soil has undergone a very large strain. Both are "failures", only defined differently. The cohesion and friction angle can be defined using the peak or ike ©QComment share © 131-22 Comments tps: linkedin com/pulse/peak-residual-strengths-sols-siva-sivakugan m4 419723, 9:17 PM Peak and Residual Strengths in Soils in] s PU UU OUI RUE LU We POU OF amunRHE Fe UF LUN SIUE ne OH angle? In most geotechnical problems (e.g., foundations) the strains are relatively small, and stresses are well below the peak. Therefore, peak parameters can be used for c and phi. Only in very large strain problems such as landslides, where the soil has passed the peak and is closer to the residual state, it is sensible to use residual values. The peak and residual strains can be in the order of 1% and 10%, respectively. Peak and residual strengths apply to both drained and undrained loading situations, In a vane shear test, one can determine both peak (initial resistance to rotation) and residual (after few rotations) values of the undrained cohesion cu.
