PED 10 | Reflective Journal Assessment: Organizational Leadership

Organizational leadership is a important aspect of management that influences the

direction, culture, and success of an organization. Effective leadership influences member’s
engagement, organizational performance, and overall productivity. In this reflective essay, I
aim to explore different leadership styles, their impact on organizational dynamics, and how
effective leadership contributes to achieving strategic objectives. By reflecting on personal
experiences and theoretical insights, I seek to enhance my understanding of leadership
practices and their significance in driving positive change within organizations

Chapter 8 has provided valuable insights into organizational leadership, covering

essential theories, models, and practical applications. Key concepts such as transformational,
transactional, and servant leadership have been explored, highlighting their significance in
shaping organizational behaviour and performance. Understanding these concepts is
important for developing effective leadership strategies that align with organizational goals
and values.

Reflecting on my personal experiences, I have encountered a range of leadership

styles in various settings, from authoritative and autocratic to democratic and
transformational. Instances of effective leadership have been characterized by clear
communication, empathy, and a focus on empowering team members. In contrast, ineffective
leadership often stems from micromanagement, lack of vision, or poor decision-making,
leading to disengagement and low morale among employees. The impact of leadership on
team dynamics, employee motivation, and organizational performance is profound. Effective
leaders inspire trust, nurture collaboration, and drive innovation, creating a positive work
environment where individuals feel valued and motivated to contribute their best. Poor
leadership can result in conflicts, resistance to change, and a decline in productivity,
eventually hindering organizational success.
Analysing different leadership styles reveals their unique strengths, weaknesses, and
applicability in diverse situations. Transformational leadership, for instance, emphasizes
vision, inspiration, and individual development, nurturing a culture of innovation and growth.

Transactional leadership focuses on rewards, performance monitoring, and clear expectations,

ensuring accountability and efficiency. Servant leadership prioritizes serving others, empathy,
and ethical decision-making, promoting a sense of community and shared purpose. Each
leadership style resonates differently based on the organizational context and the leader's
personality. Personally, I find elements of transformational leadership appealing due to its
focus on empowerment and vision. However, I recognize the importance of adapting my
leadership style to suit the needs of my team and the challenges at hand, drawing on a
versatile approach that combines different elements of leadership styles as needed.

I am inclined to make changes to my leadership approach by emphasizing

communication, empowerment, and continuous learning. Applying the principles of effective
leadership, I aim to enhance my ability to inspire, motivate, and guide my team towards
shared goals. By nurturing a culture of trust, collaboration, and innovation, I seek to
strengthen team dynamics, boost member’s engagement, and drive organizational
performance.

This reflection on organizational leadership has deepened my understanding of the

important role leader’s play in shaping organizational culture and success. Embracing diverse
leadership styles, learning from personal experiences, and applying key concepts to my own
leadership approach, I am better equipped to direct the difficulties of leadership and drive
positive change within my team and organization. This new understanding will certainly
influence my future actions as a leader, guiding me towards becoming a more effective and
compassionate steward of organizational success.
