Y 1. Introduction Hydraulic top bracing cylinders are installed between the engine and the ship's hullto detune the natural frequencies, kaly to occur during normal operation of the engine, ‘The hydrauiic top bracing cynders are flexible for longitudinal and transverse movements ‘caused by thermal expansion and varieties of loacing condtions of the ship. ‘The standard installation ison te starboard side ofthe engine, but por side installation can 'be implemented, it more convenient. Installation ls orly necessary on one side, ‘The standardinstalition features two or four top bracing cylinders, depending on engine size {and eyindor number. The tp bracing oyinders have been designed with wo different clone, and a iameter of «240 mm Is delivered for the smallerfmedium bore MC/MC-C engines, ‘whereas 6200 mm is standard for the larger bore MCAMC-C engines. 2. Technical Description ‘The hydraulic top bracing system is chowm in Sketch 2.1. The numbers below refer to the ‘major parts ofthe syetom : 1. One (or two) pal) of top bracing cylinders wih aqlustment indicators, non-return ‘valves atthe of inlet and flexible connections to the pipe system, 2 -Apump station wth two pumps, pressure control vale, olltank with sightalass‘andlevel ‘evtoh for alarm. ‘8. Areliof valve block per cylinder unt with two rele valves fr high and low ol pressure, ‘4 Ancil accumulator por pair of oyinder units with nen-retum valve and ball valve for pres- sure reli 5. Acontrol box with switches and power /alarm-Jnicators. The control box is intercon ‘ected withthe ship's control system, 5. Pipe system with oil fier, pressure switch, pressure gauge and other accessories. The oil fiter features a mechanical pressure diferent indicator Oiltype tobe used: Normal hydraulic oll or SAE 10-30 3. Functioning The hydraulic top bracing consists of single~cting unis with automatic return. During normal ‘service the pump station supplies ol ata pressure of approx. bart the inlat see of the sys tem, and consequenty this willbe the minimum work foe forthe postive stroke ofthe Hy. ‘rauic pistons, Le. when the distance between the hul and the engine is Increasing, "Non-return vaives on the inlet sie of the cylinders provide arising pressure during the nega {We stroke ofthe hydraulic pistons, ie. when the distance between the hull and the engine is decreasing, The high pressure clit valves inthe rele’ valve blocks wil open at appro 17 bar andlead the alto the outlets onthe back o the pistons, The elldralne tothe tank through the return pipe system. A ‘The oil accumulators enable rapid supply of oto the top bracing cylinders during operation, land in the event of heavy vibrations, large pressure fuctuatons in the pipe system are ‘Analarm signalis given during service inthe event of ol pressure fallure or low ollevel inthe tank, | practice the ol pressure will increase rapialy when the engine and ship structure stat to vibrate, The forees are transfered through the top bracing cylinders, which wil act as rgd ‘connections and thereby detune the natura frequencies. 4. Operation - ‘During normal service the hydraulic top bracing eystemis automatically operated bythe chip's ‘control system, 4.1 Normal operation Upon artvain ort the enn tegreph order ish th engin given.
