DIRECTOR FIDEL L. LIBAO

Regional Director
Department of Agriculture - CALABARZON
Marauoy, Lipa City
Batangas, Philippines

Dear Dir. Libao,

According to the Department of Agriculture, the average age of the Filipino farmer is nearing
60 years old. An overwhelming majority of the poor are farmers and fisherfolk. This combination of
an aging agricultural workforce and rampant poverty and hunger amongst the nation’s food producers
is a major threat to our country’s food security and demands immediate collective action from all
sectors of society.
In response to this urgent need, Gawad Kalinga is organizing the BayanAnihan Summit
Series that seeks to harness the power of young Filipino farmers, fishers, and foresters and connect
them to opportunities for productivity. The summit aims to provide a comprehensive platform that
will allow young Filipinos in agriculture to connect with opportunities from government, the private
sector, and civil society. The key output of the summit is the BayanAnihan Youth Movement where
summit participants will lead agri-initiatives in their own communities.
The BayanAnihan Summit is a series of 3-day events that will each gather at least 3,000
young people in the provinces of Cavite, Iloilo, and Cagayan de Oro. This summit series is co-
organized by leading Filipino agri-institutions Santeh Feeds Corporation and La Filipina Uy Gongco
and in partnership with the Department of Agriculture.
We would like to invite your institution to send a delegation to participate in the
BayanAnihan Summit in your island group. We believe the BayanAnihan Summit would provide an
opportunity for your delegates to access concrete opportunities, knowledge, and networks that could
contribute to the growth and success of your initiatives in agriculture.

In addition, participating institutions may also host founding chapters of the BayanAnihan
Movement that will sustain the gains of the summit after the event. You may register for the event
through https://bit.ly/BayanAnihanSummit2024Registration and learn more about the event in the
attached document.
You may also course your questions and clarifications through Marie Joy Madriaga at
mjgmadriaga@seed.edu.ph and 0906-934-2715. We look forward to creating meaningful and
enriching experiences with you at the BayanAnihan Summit. Thank you very much!

In love and service,

BayanAnihan Summit
OVERVIEW
The BayanAnihan Summit is a nationwide summit that will uplift and celebrate young
fishers, foresters, and farmers. ‘BayanAnihan’ merges the root words ‘bayan’ (country),
‘bayani’(hero), ‘ani’ (harvest), and ‘bayanihan’ (solidarity with others).
Invoking bayan, or country, the BayanAnihan Summit is a series of conferences across the
islands of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, to ensure that it can impact as many parts of the country as
possible. The BayanAnihan summit celebrates young people in agriculture – modern-day heroes or
‘bayani’ who will ensure a sustainable and food-secure future in the coming years. Third, the summit
is dedicated to empowering and energizing the agriculture sector, symbolized by ‘ani’ or harvest to
highlight the core value of productivity of our land and our people. Finally, the summit invokes the
unique Filipino spirit of bayanihan, as it aims to serve as a platform for key stakeholders in
government, the private sector, and civil society to form a system of solidarity around these young
agri-leaders, supporting and investing in their growth and success.

OBJECTIVES
1. Convergence: Provide a platform for young fishers, farmers, and foresters to form
connections in the agriculture industry.
2. Knowledge: Facilitate knowledge transfer through highlighting significant topics, issues, and
strategies in each agricultural sector
3. Opportunities: Facilitate concrete opportunities for young agri-leaders to access
opportunities in investment, training, business and employment.
4. Action: Empower participants to start BayanAnihan movements in their own towns and
communities.
