Note: Equivalent test equipment may be substituted but must be equal or superior in terms of

GENERAL
Components covered herein may feature one-piece or composite construction and may be used on
motor vehicle interior or exterior. Where these components are a constituent part of an assembly, they
shall satisfy requirements of the Procurement Specification(s) covering the assembly, including any
regulatory (►) and/or safety requirements in addition to the requirements of this Procurement
Specification.

2.1
Subject steering wheels to the checks and tests specified in the paragraphs below. Check that results
comply with requirements indicated on design and/or annexed "Specifications Data Sheet" relating to
the type concerned.
2.2
Test environment (unless otherwise specified)
• temperature: 23 ± 5 °C
• atmospheric pressure: 860 to 1060 mbar
• relative humidity: 45 to 70%.

Marking:
Each component shall be clearly and indelibly marked in the area, if any, specified on drawing with the
Supplier's identification data, date of manufacture (as per Process Standard 0.00013) and any other
information as required.
2.6
2.6.2
Gloss
Cut from a visible and significant area a flat specimen.
Carry out the test using equipment and following procedure specified on Std. 7-M0002.
2.6.3
Embossing
Cut from a visible and significant area a flat specimen.
Carry out the test using equipment and following procedure specified on Std. 7-M0003.
2.6.4
Visual inspection:
Components shall be free from cracks, mold fins, streaks, shrink marks, filler/fiber show (where
applicable) or any other defect which could impair appearance, serviceability and installation. Mating
areas of any inserts shall not show lack of adhesion, shrink marks, distortion, voids, etc.
Note: Where component incorporates items retained through welding (hot plate welding, ultrasonic
welding, vibration welding, etc.), appearance and bond shall satisfy the following requirements:
• Seam welds: weld line shall be uninterrupted and uniform in appearance. Material of weld
flash shall show no deterioration (as denoted by charred appearance);
• Spot welds: fusion shall involve both materials to an equal extent at all weld spots.
For both types, stress at bond area (e.g. during destructive tests carried out in production with
leverage or manual bending) may result in separation. In such cases, spot or seam welds shall show
uniform signs of cohesive failure on both surfaces.
2.6.5
Assessment of passenger compartment olfactory quality (only Type I)
2.6.5.1
Components shall not give off unpleasant odors. In case of dispute the olfactory assessment shall be
carried out as per Std. 7-G0055.
2.7
Molding check
2.7.1
Sectioning (thermoplastic components only)
2.7.1.1
Carry out test using a sharp knife, hand saw or other suitable tool.

2.7.2
Surfactant (thermoplastic components only)
CONFIDENTIAL
Purpose of test is to check for internal stresses arising from improper processing conditions.
2.7.2.1
Carry out test on unrestrained components in supply condition, removing any detachable inserts
before test.
2.7.2.2
Immerse component in surfactant liquid at 23 ±2°C for 5 minutes (3 min for polycarbonate plastics
only). Surfactant shall be as specified below.
Note: Where component size or configuration is such that it cannot be immersed, component surface
may be "brushed" with surfactant for the time specified above.
2.7.2.3
Remove component from surfactant, rinse thoroughly in running water and dry using a soft cloth or
compressed air.
2.7.2.4
Check component appearance.
2.7.2.5
Repeat operation as per § 2.7.2.4, 24 hours after end of test to check for any delayed cracking.
2.7.3
2.7.3.1
Perform test on 3 components at least. Components shall be free from assembly constraints and as

2.7.3.2
Place materials in environmental chamber at the temperature indicated in the following table:
• 2 hrs at 80 ± 2°C;

Notes: • materials shall pass from one environment to another within 60 s. In case of manual
handling, if the test shall be performed during the night, it shall correspond to the low
temperature cycle, in order to avoid thermal oxidation of the polymer;
• temperatures indicated in table can vary according to special needs and are to be
noted down on the drawing of the component.
2.7.3.3
Remove components from chamber, cool at ambient temperature for at least 2 hours and evaluate
appearance.
2.8
Liquid penetrant inspection (thermosetting plastic components only)

2.8.1

Carry out test using equipment and procedures as per Process Standard 0.00025/01 on clean, dry,
grease-free components with no surface treatments of any kind (i.e. primer, filler, paint, etc.) but

2.9
Radiographic inspection (thermosetting plastic components only)
2.9.1
Carry out test using weak radiation and beryllium window equipment. Inspection technique used shall
be capable of producing images with contrast and definition as specified in Std. 50161.
2.10
Effects of heat
2.10.1
Simulated Paint cycle (components painted after supply only)
2.10.1.1
Measure major dimensions to the nearest 0.5 mm.
2.10.1.2
Carry out test on a component installed on a suitable fixture (ref. § A-1).
2.10.1.3
Place component in oven (ref. § A-2) or one hour at the temperature indicated below. Subsequently
condition for 2 hours at ambient temperature.

2.10.2.3
Remove component from oven and cool at ambient temperature of 23 ± 5°C for at least 2 hours. Then
repeat measurement as per 2.10.2.1

Calculate percentage change in dimensions and evaluate component appearance, checking for any
breakage, deformation or other defects.
2.10.3
Heat shock (only for vehicle exterior components and interior components which are exposed to
direct sunlight)

Place component in oven (ref. § A-2) at the temperatures and for the periods specified below in

2.11.3
Remove assembly at end of cycling and cool at ambient temperature for at least 2 hours. Then
evaluate component appearance and serviceability of any moveable inserts (i.e. levers).
2.12
Effects at damp heat (only for Type E components of Type I components with composite structure or
added trim)
2.12.1
Carry out test with component installed and retained as on vehicle.
2.12.2
Place assembly in damp heat chamber (ref. § A-4) at 40 ± 2 °C with 90% min R.H. for the following
period:
• 100 hrs for Type E components;
• 200 hrs for Type I components.
2.12.3
Remove assembly after conditioning and cool at ambient temperature for at least 2 hours. Then
evaluate component appearance and serviceability of any moveable inserts.
2.13
Resistance to hydrolysis (only for Type E components consisting of expanded integral-skin foamed
polyurethane in direct contact with weathering agents)
2.13.1
Cut three representative specimens at least 300 mm long from different areas of part under test. Do
not mask cut edges.
2.13.2
Fully immerse specimens in water at ambient temperature for 4 hours until polyurethane is thoroughly
soaked.
2.13.3
Place containers with water and specimens in low temperature chamber (ref. § A-3) at -7.5 ± 2.5 °C

2.13.4

Remove containers from chamber (ref. § A-3) and quickly thaw specimens under running water. Dry
surfaces using compressed air or filter paper.
2.13.5
Place specimens in oven (ref. § A-2) at 80 ± 2 °C for 4 hours.

2.13.6
Remove specimens from oven and cool for at least 2 hours at 23 ± 5 °C. Then inspect exposed
surface under ≥10 x magnification.
2.13.7
Repeat all operations as per 2.13.1 to 2.13.6 for two successive cycles.
2.14
Low temperature impact (only for components which may be subject to impact during service)
2.14.1
Carry out test with component installed and retained as on vehicle. Where this is not possible because
of component configuration and dimensions, carry out test on a representative portion of component
secured in contact with a horizontal surface.
2.14.2
Condition assembly in low temperature chamber (ref. § A-3) or at least 6 hours at the temperature
shown below.

Remove assembly from chamber. Within 60 s of removal, drop sphere (ref. § A-5) onto three different
points of component from a height of 150 mm.

Cut a Y 50 x 200 mm specimen from component under test.

The Supplier shall comply with the general requirements contained in P.S. 9.01102 “QUALITY OF
SUPPLIES".
4.1
Product Qualification Supplies
The Supplier shall submit the amount of product specified in the purchase order and attach the Quality
and Conformity Certificate (see P.S. 9.01103); all characteristics specified on the attached

4.2
Product Supplies
The supplied product shall conform with drawing and this specification. When establishing the
manufacturing process to be adopted and severity of inspections, the Supplier shall take into account

the classes of importance that FIAT has assigned to each of the characteristics to which requirements
refer (see § 5).
Note: Checks may be performed on components which have been subjected to non-destructive tests
(indicated with NM in § 5); during product qualification and supply inspection. Components
which have been subjected to destructive tests (M) may not be used for further tests or
inspections unless otherwise specified case by case.
