2- The ISO 14000: Environmental Management System

The ISO 14000: is a series of environmental management standards rules developed and
published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for organizations. The ISO
14000 standards provide a guideline or framework for organizations that need to systematize and
improve their environmental management efforts by specifying what the firm does to minimize
harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities, and to achieve continual
improvement of its environmental performance.
The ISO 14000 certification is optional, not required and the documentation standards require
participating companies to keep track of their raw materials use and their generation, treatment,
and disposal of hazardous wastes. Although not specifying what each company is allowed to
emit, the standards require companies to prepare a plan for ongoing improvement in their
environmental performance.

ISO 14000 covers a number of areas, including the following:

1- Environmental Management System. Requires a plan to improve performance in resource use
and pollutant output.
2- Environmental Performance Evaluation. Specifies guidelines for the certification of
companies.
3- Environmental Labeling. Defines terms such as recyclable, energy efficient, and safe for the
ozone layer.
4- Life-Cycle Assessment. Evaluates the lifetime environmental impact from the manufacture,
use, and disposal of a product.

Companies that have implemented ISO 14000 standards report environmental and
economic benefits such as:
1- Reduced raw material/resource use.
2- Reduced energy consumption and environmental damage.
3- Lower distribution costs.
4- Improved corporate image.
5- Improved process efficiency.
6- Reduced waste generation and disposal costs.
7- Better utilization of recoverable resources.

ISO 14000 makes a number of specific requirements, including the following:

1- A commitment by top-level management to environmental management
2- The development and communication of an environmental policy
3- The establishment of relevant legal and regulatory requirements
4- The setting of environmental objectives and targets
5- The establishment and updating of a specific environmental programme, or programmes ,
geared to achieving the objectives and targets

1
6- The implementation of supporting systems such as training, operational control and
emergency planning
7- Regular monitoring and measurement of all operational activities
8- A full audit procedure to review the working and suitability of the system

performance of office equipment that contains reused components.

2
ISO/IEC 24700 specifies product characteristics for use in an original equipment
manufacturer’s or authorized third-party’s declaration of conformity to demonstrate that a
marketed product that contains reused components performs equivalent to new, meeting
equivalent-to-new component specifications and performance criteria, and continues to
meet all the safety and environmental criteria required by responsibly built products.

5 -ISO 22000: is a standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization

dealing with food safety.
Food safety is linked to the presence of food-borne hazards in food at the point of
consumption. Since food safety hazards can occur at any stage in the food chain it is essential
that adequate control be in place. Therefore, a combined effort of all parties through the food
chain is required.
Prerequisite programmers on food safety:
1: Food manufacturing
2: Catering
3: Farming
4: Food packaging manufacturing
5: Feed and animal food production

6 -The ISO 27000: set of standards have been specifically reserved by ISO for information
security matters.
Published jointly by the International Organization for Standardization and the International
