Open Issues
The Group Discussion is on the topic “Brain Drain” and each participant presented their
understanding and point of view on the issue. Participants 1, 4 and 6 were against the idea
of Brain Drain whereas participants 2, 3, 5 agreed with the idea of Brain Drain.
In short, brain drain occurs when someone leaves their country in search of better chances,
such as higher salaries, higher standards of living, and so forth, and instead contributes to
the growth of the destination nation. Participants 1, 4, and 6 said that for a developing
country like India, this becomes a problem because all the talented individuals who could
potentially be inexpensive assets to the country use their knowledge for the benefit of the
country they emigrate to rather than for the advancement of India. They continued by
saying that because the nation spends countless billions of rupees annually, it is everyone's
societal duty to support their own country's development. Participants 2, 3, and 5 disagreed
with the arguments made by participants 1, 4, and 6, arguing that people are free to do as
they choose and immigrate to whatever country they choose in quest of a better life and
more chances. They continued by saying that many of these bright individuals are underpaid
and devalued in India, which is a significant contributing factor in the high rate of
emigration. many stated that many great individuals go overlooked and underappreciated
here, which is why many emigrate, albeit they were somewhat in agreement with the idea
of the government offering scholarships and investing money on research and development.
Throughout the discussion, Participant 2 kept coming back to the idea that money is the
single most important aspect for an individual. She recommended that the government seek
to improve opportunities so that skilled individuals won't feel the need to relocate. The
conversation as a whole emphasizes the importance of cooperating to create a stronger,
more unified India.
