Design of Permanent Joints

(Riveted & Welded Joints)

Q. A brake band attached to the hinge by means of a riveted joint shown in Fig.
Determine the size of the rivets needed for the load of 10 kN. Also determine the width
of the band. The permissible stresses for the band and rivets in tension, shear and
compression are 80, 60 and 120 N/mm 2 respectively. Assume margin (m) = 1.5d;
transverse pitch (pt) = p; Find the pitch of the rivets.
Q. Two tie-bar plates of a bridge structure, 250mm wide and 20 mm thick, are to be
connected by a double-strap butt joint as shown in Fig. The rivets and the plates are
made of steel. The permissible stresses in tension, shear and compression are 80, 60
and 120 N/mm2 respectively.
(i) Determine the diameter of the rivet by using following empirical relationship,
d=6√𝑡
(ii) Determine the number of rivets by equating the strength of the plate with the
strength of the rivets. Assume that shear resistance of one rivet in double shear
is 1.875 times its resistance in single shear.
(iii) Determine the efficiency of the joint.
Q. A bracket is attached to a horizontal column by means of three identical rivets as
shown in Fig. The maximum permissible shear stress for the rivets is 60 N/mm 2. Which
rivet is subjected to maximum shear force? (ii) What is the magnitude of maximum
force? (iii) Determine the diameter of rivet.
Q. Two plates, each 5 mm thick, are connected by means of four rivets as shown in Fig.
The permissible stresses for rivets and plates in tension, shear and compression are 80,
60 and 120 N/mm2 respectively. Calculate: (i) diameter of the rivets; (ii) width of the
plate; and (iii) efficiency of the joint.
Q. A bracket is attached to a steel channel by means of nine identical rivets as shown in
Fig. Determine the diameter of rivets, if the permissible shear stress is 60 N/mm2.
Design of Welded Joints
Q. A plate, 75mm wide and 10 mm thick, is joined with another steel plate by means of
single transverse and double parallel fillet welds. The joint is subjected to a maximum
tensile force of 55 kN. The permissible tensile and shear stresses in the weld material
are 70 and 50N/mm2 . Determine the required length of each parallel fillet weld.

Single transverse double parallel fillet welded Joints

Q. A welded connection subjected to an eccentric force of 7.5 kN is shown. Determine
the size of the welds if the permissible shear stress for the weld is 100 N/mm 2. Assume
static conditions.
Q. A bracket, as shown in Fig. is welded to a plate. The welds have the same throat and
leg size, and the permissible force per mm of the weld-length is 1 kN. Calculate the
lengths l1 and l2.
Q. A circular shaft, 50mm in diameter, is welded to the support by means of
circumferential fillet weld as shown in Fig. It is subjected to torsional moment of 2500
N-m, and transverse load of 10 kN. Determine the size of the weld, if the permissible
shear stress in the weld is limited to 140 N/mm2.
Q. A shaft of rectangular cross section is welded to a support by means of fillet welds.
Determine the size of the welds, if the permissible shear stress in the weld is limited to
75 N/mm2 .
Q. A welded joint, as shown in Fig., is subjected to an eccentric load of 2500 N. Find the
size of the weld, if the maximum shear stress in the weld is not to exceed 50 N/mm 2.
