The art of packing

You should bring ONE checked suitcase. Remember, you will need space for bringing
your souvenirs home on your return trip! Don’t feel you need to bring enough of
everything for the duration of your stay, there are things you can buy while you’re
here.

The basics
1. prescription medication –you may need a doctor’s letter for customs
2. your passport and health/travel insurance documents
3. a small towel and if necessary, clothes hangers (not provided in your
accommodation, but available in local supermarkets)
4. work and play clothes: sneakers/walking shoes, a light jacket
5. a UK/Ireland plug adapter (BS1363). You can buy one in Dublin too of course
but it’s just so much easier to arrive prepared!
6. For hairdryers and straighteners it is better to buy a cheap one in Dublin – US
ones can get fried because of the different voltage unless you buy a voltage
converter, which is often quite expensive.

Packing: Carry-On Luggage

Pack your carry-on bag on the basis that your check-in luggage might get lost or
delayed, or that you might be delayed on your way to Dublin after check-in/luggage
drop. Make sure your travelling essentials are with you at all times in your carry-on
case:

Carry-on essentials:
• prescription medication
• a valid passport
• a round-trip airline ticket
• cash/credit card
• your letter from your home institution (please ensure that your name on the
letter matches the name on your passport EXACTLY)
• proof of international health insurance
• a bank statement showing you have enough funds to support yourself for the
duration of your stay (135 EUR per week)
• cellphone (if you’re bringing a phone with an international plan)
• anything you feel you will need if you are stuck in an airport for 24 hours
