1. A light spring of force-constant 1200 𝑁𝑚 is mounted on a horizontal table, as shown. A
3.0 𝑘𝑔 mass is attached to the free end of the spring, pulled sideways to distance of 2.0 𝑐𝑚
and released. Find (a) the frequency of oscillation of the mass, (b) maximum acceleration of
the mass, (c) the maximum speed of the mass, (d) speed of the mass when the spring is
compressed by 1.0 𝑐𝑚, (e) potential energy of the mass when it momentarily comes to rest, (f) total energy of the
oscillating mass.

2. Consider the spring-mass system with the mass submerged in water, as shown in the figure. Draw
the phase space diagram for one cycle of this system.

3. A body of mass 0.1 𝑘𝑔 is held between two rigid supports by two springs of force-constant 8 𝑁𝑚−1 and 2 𝑁𝑚−1 .
If the body be displaced along the direction of the length of the springs, calculate its frequency of vibration.

4. 3𝜋
A body of mass 0.1 𝑘𝑔 is executing S.H.M. represented by the equation 𝑥 = 0.5 cos (100𝑡 + ) 𝑚 . Find (i) the
4
frequency of oscillation, (ii) initial phase, (iii) maximum velocity, (iv) maximum acceleration, (v) total energy.

5. 5.582𝜋𝑅 Joule, work is done in breaking a big drop of water of radius 𝑅 into 8000 small drops of equal volume.
Find out the surface tension of water.
6. Water rises in a capillary tube to a height 2.0 𝑐𝑚 in another capillary whose radius is
one-third of it, how much the water will rise? If the first capillary is inclined at an
angle of 60° with the vertical then what will be the position of water in the tube?

7. A thin liquid film formed between a 𝑈-shaped wire and a light slider supports a weight of
1.5 × 10−2 𝑁. The length of the slider is 30 𝑐𝑚 and its weight is negligible. Find the surface tension
of the liquid film?

8. Two capillary tubes of diameters 10.0𝑚𝑚 and 8.00𝑚𝑚 are held vertically inside water one by one. How much
high the water will rise in each tube? (𝑔 = 10𝑚𝑠 −2 , surface tension of water= 7.0 × 10−2 𝑁/𝑚)

Fluid Mechanics
9. Water is filled in a cylinderical container up-to a height of 3𝑚. A hole of cross-sectional area 𝑎 is made in the wall
of the container at a height of 52.5 𝑐𝑚 from the bottom. The cross-sectional area of the container is 𝐴. If 𝑎/𝐴 =
0.1 ,then find the square of speed of water coming out from the hole?

10. (a) What is the largest average velocity of blood flow in an artery of radius 2 × 10−3 𝑚 if the blood flow must
remain stream-lines? (b) What is the corresponding flow rate? (Take viscosity of blood to be 2.04 × 10−3 𝑃𝑎 s,
density of blood = 1.06 × 103 𝑘𝑔𝑚−3 ,Reynold’s number= 2000)

11. Water is flowing through two horizontal pipes of different diameters which are connected together. In the first
𝑁
pipe speed of water is 4.0 𝑚/𝑠 and the pressure is 2.0 × 104 𝑚2 . Calculate the speed and pressure of water in the
second pipe. The diameters of the pipes are 3.0 𝑐𝑚 and 6.0 𝑐𝑚 respectively.

12. Calculate ℎ in the U-tube shown in the figure( Density of oil = 0.9 𝑔𝑐𝑚−3 and density
of mercury= 13.6 𝑔𝑐𝑚−3 )
