Variable speed
L-SR Compressor Sequencing
• When the L-SR variable speed compressor is
used in conjunction with a new or existing
“on-load / off-load” machine; a compressor
sequencer is not necessarily required.
• The following slides will show how to set up
these machines to operate efficiently
together.
L-SR Compressor Sequencing
• Before we begin, there are a couple of
important points:

• The constant speed machine needs to have

“on-load / off-load control”…. with “run on
timer shutdown” to minimize energy
consumption.
L-SR Compressor Sequencing
• Let’s look at “sequencing” the following
machines –

• L75 SR compressor – 431 CFM @ 7.0 barg

• L55 compressor – 346 CFM @ 7.0 barg

In the morning, we turn both compressors on to fill the

system header. System header pressure is 0 Bar, and both
machine load fully and make 777 CFM total.

With no air demand yet, the system / header pressure

continually rises. As the header pressure reaches 6.2 Bar,
what happens to the compressors?

Nothing!! The L55 is below its unload pressure and the

L75 SR is below its target pressure. Air flow into system is
still 777 CFM.

The L55 still runs full load and the L75 SR slows down to
hold 6.5 Bar.

Because there is still no air demand, and the L55 is running

fully loaded, the pressure rises higher. The L75 SR wants
to control @ 6.5 Bar so it idles back to minimum speed.

times out) while the L75 SR continues to run at minimum
speed.

shutdown, (hot standby) waiting for the pressure to fall.

demand.

As long as the plant air demand stays below 431 CFM, the
L75 SR matches the air demand, keeping the header
pressure constant to within + 0.016 Bar of the target!

Now it’s approaching 10:30 AM and some heavy production

begins. The air demand reaches 575 CFM. The L75 SR
can not keep up with the new demand and the pressure
falls!

Once the header reaches 6.2 Bar, the L55 reloads making
346 CFM. With the L75 SR making full flow, the air
pressure rises back up.
