surfaces prepared to a common plane by milling, sawing or other suitable means.
e. Tolerances. Structural members consisting primarily of a single rolled shape, shall unless
otherwise specified, be straight within appropriate tolerance allowed by ASTM
Specification A7 or as prescribed in the following paragraph. Built-up structural members
fabricated by riveting or welding, unless otherwise specified, shall be straight within the
tolerance allowed for wide flange shapes by ASTM Specification A7 or by the requirements
of the following paragraph.

f. Compression members. Compression members shall not deviate from straightness by more
to be laterally supported.
g. Completed members. Completed members shall be free from twist, bends and open joints.
Sharp kinks or bends shall be a cause for rejection of materials.
h. Length. A variation of 1/32 inch is permissible in the overall length or members with both
ends finished for contact bearing, as in the proceeding section. Members without ends
finished for contract bearings, which are to be framed to other steel parts of the structure,
may have a variation from the detailed length not greater than 1/16 inch for members over
30 feet in length.

SEC. 2 PRODUCTTS:

2.1 MATERIALS:

Structural steel for all main members shall conform to ASTM specification A36 with minimum
yield strength of 36,000 psi.

or E70 series, submerged arc grade SAW-2.

SEC. 3 FABRICATION:

1 Straightening material. Rolled materials, before being laid off or worked, must be
straight within tolerance allowed by AISC Manual of Steel Construction. If straightening
in necessary, it shall be done by methods that will not injure the metal.
2 Gas cutting. Gas cutting shall preferably be done by machine. Gas cut edges which will
be subjected to substantial stress or which are to have weld metal deposit on them shall
be remove by griding. All re-entrant corners shall be shaped notch free to a radius of at
least ½ inch.
3 Planning of edges. Planning or finishing of nsheared or gas cut edges of plates or shapes
will not be required unless specifically called for on the drawings or include on a
stipulated edge preparation for welding.

SEC.4 WELDED CONSTRUCTION :

4.1 Welds shall be made only by qualified welders and welding operators. All welds shall
conform to the “Standard Code for Welding in Building Construction” of the American Welding
Society.

4.2 Surface to be welded shall be free from loose scale, slag, rust, grese paint and any other
foreign material except that mill scale which withstand vigorous wire brushing may remain.
Joint surfaces shall be free whenever practicable be done by a mechanically guided torch.

4.3 Parts to be fillet-welded shall be free from loose scale, slag, rust, grease, paint and any
other foreign material except that mill scale which withstand vigorous wire brushing may
remain. Joint surface shall be free from burrs ad tears. Preparation of edges by gas cutting shall
whenever practicable be done by a mechanically guided torch.

4.4 Abutting members to be butt welded shall be carefully aligned. Misalignments greater
than 1/8 inch shall be corrected and, in making the corrections, the parts shall not be drawn
into sharper slops than 2 degree (7/16 inch in 12 inches). The work shall be positioned for flat
welding whenever practicable.

4.5 In assembling and joining parts of a structure or built-up members, the procedure and
sequence of welding shall be such as will avoid needless distortion and minimize shrinkage
stress. Where it is impossible to avoid high residual stresses in the closing welds of a rigid
assembly, such closing welds shall be made in compression elements.

4.6 All complete penetration butt welds made by manual welding, except when produced
with the aid of backing material or welded in flat position from both sides in square- edge
material not more than 5/16 joined, shall have the root of the initial layer gauged out on the
back side before welding is started from that side, and shall be so welded as to secure sound
metal and complete fusion through the entire section. Butt welds made with use of a backing of
the same materials as the base metal shall have the weld thoroughly fused with the backing
materials. Backing strips may maybe removed by gouging or gas cutting after welding is
completed, provided to injury is done to the base metal and the weld metal surface is left flush
or slightly convex with full throat thickness.

4.7 Butt welds shall be terminated at the ends of a joint in a manner that will insure their
soundness. Where possible, these, should be done by use of extension bars of run-off plates.
Extension bars r run-off plates, if used shall be removed upon completion of the weld and the
ends of the welds made smooth and flush with abutting parts.

4.8 Base metal shall be pre-heated to the required temperature prior to tack welding or
welding. Where required, multiple layer welds may be panned with light blows from a power
hammer, using a rough nose tool. Penning shall be done after the weld has cooled to a
temperature warm to the hand. Care shall be exercised to prevent scaling or flaking or weld ad
base metal from over penning.

4.9 The technique of welding employed, the appearance and quality of welds made, he
methods used in correcting defective work shall conform to section 4 workmanship of the
Standard Code of ARC and gas Welding in Building Construction of the American Welding
Society.

SEC. 5 SHOP PAINTING:

Except as otherwise specified, all structural steel, bolts, and abraded surfaces shall be given a
shop coat of red lead paint or zinc chromate primer paint. Steel that will be subject to mill and
shop inspection shall not be painted until after such inspection has been made or waived.

Unless otherwise provided, surfaces within two inches of any field weld location shall be free of
materials that would prevent proper welding or produce objectionable fumes while welding is
being done.

After completion of all field welds and/or other field splices, all such joints shall be give a coat
of rust-inhibitive paint similar to all shop coats specified.

SEC. 6 ERECTION:

6.1 Bracing.

All structural steel framings and trusses shall be carried up true and plum temporary bracing
shall be introduced wherever necessary to take care of all loads to which the structure may be
subject, including equipment and operation of same. Such bracing shall left in place as long as
may be required for safety. Wherever, piles of material, erection of equipment or other loads
are carried during erection, proper provision shall be made to take care of stresses resulting
from such loads.

6.2 Adequacy of Temporary Connections.

As erection progresses, the work shall be securely bolted or welded, to take care of all dead
load, wind and erection stress.

6.3 Alignment.

No permanent welding shall be done until as much of the structures as will be stiffened thereby
has been ,properly aligned.

6.4 Field Welding.

Any shop paint on surface adjacent to joints to be field welded shall be wire brushed to reduce
the paint film to minimum.

6.5 Gas Cutting.

The use of gas cutting torch I the field for correcting fabrication errors will not be permitted on
any major member when the member is under stress and then only when approved.

6.6 Column Base Plates.

Column base plates shall be set accurately using grouting mortar to obtain uniform bearing in
the concrete, grouting mortar for setting base plates of steel columns or bearing plates shall be
non-shrinking type of grouting mortar. The mortar shall be a mixture of one part Portland
Cement, 2-1/2 parts of well graded fine aggregate, one teaspoon of aluminum powder and
enough water provide maximum water cement ration of 0.50 by weight. In lieu of the
foregoing, an approved standard commercial grouting mortar containing a metallic chemical
oxidizing agent may be used. The approved work in the original sealed containers each bearing
the trade name of the manufacturer. Surface to receive the mortar shall be moistened
thoroughly, immediately before placing the mortar. Exposed surfaces of the mortar shall be
water-cured with wet burlap for seven (7) days.

6.7 Anchor Bolts.

The structural steel fabrication shall supply all anchor bolts and other materials to be
embedded in concrete or as necessary for the installation of the finished structures prior to
pouring of concrete; shall coordinate his work with other trades in regard of the required
elevations.

SEC. 7 TESTING AND INSPECTION

X-ray or gamma-ray radiography shall be used for the detection of small defects in welded
construction, any unsatisfactory welding works shall be corrected promptly.
