Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables Test 04

Solution

1. (a) has infinitely many solutions

Explanation: Given: a1 = 1, a2 = 3, b1 = -4, b2 = -12, c1 = 8 and c2 = 24
a1 b1 c1
Here, 1 −4 1 8 1

∵ = =
a2 b2 c2

Therefore, the system has infinitely many solutions.

2. (c) intersecting at (a, b)
Explanation: The pair of equations x = a and y = b graphically represents lines which are intersecting at (a, b), as when
we plot the graphs x=a will run parallel to y-axis and y=b will run parallel to x-axis but they will intersect each other at
point (a, b)

3. (a) coincident
Explanation: Given: a1 = 5, a2 = -10, b1 = -3, b2 = 6, c1 = 11 and c2 =-22
a1 = 5, a2 = -10, b1 = -3, b2 = 6, c1 = 11 and c2 = -22

Therefore, the pair of given linear equations is coincident.

4. False
Explanation: False
5. No
6. Yes, the point (x,0) lies on x-axis because the coordinate of any point on x-axis is zero.
7. Suppose larger angle = x and smaller angle = y o o

Now x − y = 20 ...(i)
x + y = 180 ...(ii)

Adding equation (i) and (ii)

⇒ 2x = 200

⇒ x = 100

⇒ y = 80

8. Given equations are

2x + 3y = 7
So, 2x + 3y - 7 = 0 ...............(i)
and 6x - 5y = 11
So, 6x - 5y - 11 = 0 ..............(ii)
Here a1 = 2, b1 = 3, c1 = -7
a2 = 6, b2 = -5, c2 = -11
By cross multiplication method we have

9. Let the ten's digit of the required number be x and the unit's digit be y.
As per given condition the sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 12.
Then, x + y = 12. ...(i)
Required number = (10x + y).
Number obtained on reversing the digits = (10y + x).
As per given condition the number obtained by interchanging its digits exceeds the given number by 18.
∴ (10y + x) - (10x + y) = 18

⇒ 10y + x - 10x - y = 18

⇒ 9y -9x = 18

⇒ y -x = 2. ...(ii)

On adding (i) and (ii), we get

(x + y) + (y -x) = 12 + 2
⇒ 2y = 14

⇒ y = 7.

Putting y = 7 in (i), we get

x + 7 = 12
⇒ x = 12 - 7 = 5

∴ x = 5 and y = 7.

Hence, the required number is 57.

10. The monthly incomes of A and B are in the ratio of 9: 7.
So incomes of A and B be 9x and 7x.
And monthly expenditures of A and B are in the ratio of 4: 3.
So, monthly expenditures be 4y and 3y
then, as per given condition
9x-4y=1600 .... (i)
7x-3y=1600 ... (ii)
Multiplying eq (i) by 3 and eq (ii) by 4, we get
27x-12y=4800 ... (iii)
28x-12y=6400 ... (iv)
Subtracting eq (iii) from eq (iv), we get
x=1600
Put x = 1600 in (ii), we get
7x-3y=1600

7(1600)- 3y = 1600
3y = 11200 - 1600
3y = 9600
y=3200
Hence the monthly income of A and B are 14400,11200.
And monthly expenditures of A and B are 12800, 9600.
11. We have,
6x - 3y = 12
⇒ 3(2x - y) = 12

⇒ 2x - y = 4

⇒ 2x - 4 = y

⇒ y = 2x - 4 .....(i)

Put x = 0 in (i), we get y = -4

Put x = 2 in (i), we get y = 0
Thus, we obtain the following table giving coordinates of two points on the line represented by the equation 6x - 3y = 12.
x 0 2

y -4 0

The graph of line 6x - 3y = 12:

Clearly, the line intersects with the coordinate axes at (2, 0) and (0, -4).
