IF YOU LIKED THIS BOOK…
A CUBE STORY
If you have received a Rubik’s Cube, get ready for some fun! Don’t be
overwhelmed by this world-famous challenge! It’s great fun and enjoyable
to solve once you learn the easy steps! Though you will need a calm and
focused mind and a dash or two (or three) of perseverance. Perseverance is
when you don’t give up, when you keep trying and trying until you get it.
This is how many people meet their goals. Are you ready for a colorful
adventure? Let’s learn more about where this mysterious colorful cube
came from in the first place.

The Rubik’s Cube has a colorful history (pun intended!) It was originally
invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik, a professor from Budapest, Hungary. He
made the cube to help his students understand three-dimensional problems.
Hence how this 3D puzzle came to be!
At first, the original Rubik’s Cube took Erno over a month to solve! Now,
with all of the solutions for this cube at our fingertips, we can solve it a
little faster! We will explore some of the best solutions for you to solve the
cube. But first, a little more of the origins story of this spectacular sly,
crafty cube! Read on, puzzle warrior !

In Erno’s country, more people were trying their own hands at solving this
crafty cube. The Rubik’s Cube was growing in popularity! More and more
people in Hungary were enjoying this new puzzling, twisting, turning toy!
Now, the only thing that was stopping the Magic Cube from reaching the
whole world as Erno Rubik saw it could, was that he lived in a communist
country.

What is a communist country, you ask? It’s where everyone shares the
wealth and no one owns their own land. The rules in that country stopped
Erno from getting his popular toy out as much as he wanted. The rules for
sending things out of the country stopped him from sharing it with other
countries in that way. Yet Erno saw that it had potential to really catch on
and become even more of a popular toy than it already was!

Erno would not let his idea be stopped. What could he do to get the word
out? He came up with a grand idea- he would show his Magic Cube at the
many toy fairs that were held! The global impact of the Rubik’s Cube began
in 1980 when Erno showed off his twisty, turny, colorful invention at toy
fairs and conferences in London, New York, Paris, and Nuremberg.
Mathematicians immediately caught onto the craze and wanted their own
Magic Cubes to work out their puzzles and numbers on!

Picture this: it’s 1979 and a toy specialist named Tom Kremer was at the
Nuremberg Toy Fair, looking for the next biggest and best toy. What would
it be? Suddenly, someone came to his table and gave him a challenge. When
he picked up the Rubik’s Cube and started turning it and twisting it, this
way and that as he tried to figure out the new, enchanting puzzle, it clicked!
This was the new toy he wanted! He saw how great it could be and how
many people of all ages would love it as they challenged themselves to
figure out this unique, enjoyable, twisty-turny puzzle! He wanted to let the
rest of the world know about this new wondrous, almost magical cube! He
could see the world loving this new puzzle, this colorful challenge, this
Cube that would take the world by storm with its endless varieties !
Tom convinced the Ideal Toy Company to make this the next toy they
would send out to the masses. His passion and belief in the toy’s ability to
sell made it happen! Have you ever wanted something really badly? Then
you can relate! Using his brainpower and the uniqueness of the toy, Tom
sold them on the idea that this would be a huge fad for the masses- and it
turned out to be a long-lasting one at that! Despite it being so many years
ago, 44 years as of this writing, the Rubik’s cube still brings a smile to
many a face and a determination to solve this crafty puzzle!

Modern day kid with a puzzle that has stood the test of time.
The company that was to buy this cube only wanted to change one thing:
the name! They wanted a name that popped, that razzed and dazzled- that
attracted people to try out this new wondrous cube of colors. They renamed
it the Magic Cube!
SOLVING THE MOST FAMOUS
PUZZLE IN THE WORLD
Are You Ready?
As you read this helpful guide, try out your Rubik’s Cube to get familiar
with it! Have fun with it! Don’t take it too seriously- it was made to be fun,
after all! The first step is to simply play around with the cube and get
comfortable with it. Turn it and twist it and see what you notice. Half the
battle is conquering your fear of being able to solve it in the first place.
Don’t give up! This 3D puzzle you hold in your hand is not impossible! It
can be solved, and I will show you how!

Get a feel for it first .

WHAT IS THIS PIECE CALLED?
Identifying the Center Pieces!
As you turn it and see all the different colors, you might notice that the
center pieces stay the same color- they do not change. This is how it was
made. Center pieces are the pieces with one color. They don’t move!
Everything else moves, except the center. They are solid, like a rock. Their
place is permanent. They cannot be moved! This is good news- it will help
you to solve the puzzle and get your solution soon. So, don’t worry and do
not fear! Help is here! You can solve the Rubik’s Cube!
Arrows pointing at the center pieces of each face.

They are one-sided pieces and every cube has a total of 6 center pieces.
Locate your cube’s center pieces. Found them? Good !

Living on the Edge! Edge Pieces

Take a look at the cube. Do you how some pieces only have two colors?
These are edge pieces and the cube has 12 of them.

They are two-sided pieces. Locate your cube’s 12 side pieces.

Putting 12 arrows pointing at the image above would’ve been too much so I
kept at three! You get the idea though, right?

Don’t Forget the Corner Pieces!

They are three-sided pieces and every cube has a total of 8 corner pieces.
Locate your cube’s corner pieces !
Now- let’s break it down even further to help you get on your way to
solving this twisty, topsy-turvy cube!

Faces
Each side of the cube is referred to as a “face.” (No, not that kind of face
with eyes, a nose and a mouth- that’s a smiley face! ☺ ). These faces will
tell you how to turn it to make the smartest move! There are six faces. Each
face is represented or shown by its first letter (in bold, below). Here are the
faces:
Great, let’s keep going !
CUBIC SIGNALS
But first, some helpful vocab words!
Clockwise: The direction in which a clock turns.
Algorithm: Fancy word for sequence or action necessary for a getting a
result we want.
90 Degree Turn: In this case, it’s the turning of a selected row or face only
once.

Introduction to symbols:
To communicate our solving procedure, we will be using the following
symbols:
You’re probably asking yourself: what the heck are these? Well, every
symbol represents a one 90-degree clockwise movement (turning the cube
once) of any of the rows in the cube. Make sure that when performing a
sequence or algorithm, the center piece facing you remains at the start
remains facing you until the end. This center piece (or face) will be known
as your ‘front’ face .

Whenever you’re confused so to which face should be your front face, look
out for the ‘F’ label on each cube:

In this case, your front face should be where the red center piece is located.
Your right face (‘R’) should be the face where the blue center piece is.

Here are some examples of our notations in action:

This symbol indicates to the bottom row towards the right once (90
degrees).
This symbol indicates to turn the front face clockwise (towards the right)
once (90 degrees).

This symbol indicates to move the most left row up once (90 degrees).
If the algorithm requires the movement 2 times in the same direction, the
symbols will be placed two times as well. Just like this:

These symbols indicate that the cube’s bottom row should be turned to the
left twice (180 degrees total).
BUILDING THE WHITE CROSS
Objective: Build the white cross using the white center piece as reference.
After the white cross is built, make sure that the side piece above the green,
orange, blue, and red (except yellow) center pieces match in color. See the
illustration below:
Correct way to do it:

The white cross has been built and the side piece above all center pieces
(except yellow) match in color.
Wrong way to do it :

White cross has been built but the side pieces on top of the center pieces do
not match in color.
Pointers:

The white cross should be on the top face of the cube at all times
when solving the cube during this phase.
Get comfortable moving the cube around and don’t be afraid to
mess up!
Under no circumstance try to skip ahead. It will only give you a
headache.

Pep Talk: This is the part of the Rubik’s Cube that takes some trial and
error, so buckle down and get ready to scramble for a solution! Don’t get
discouraged if you can’t get it at first- keep twisting and turning. It’s a
maze, yes, but it is a maze with solutions and there is a way to solve it- I
promise !

Getting Down to Business:

You now know the destination, it’s time work our way there! So, start
spinning that cube! As there are 43 quintillion
(43,252,003,274,489,856,000) different Rubik’s cube combinations, we
can’t meet you with this guide (or any guide) exactly we’re you’re at with
your cube. However, we can give you useful algorithms that will take the
guesswork out of the equation. All you need to do is position the cube until
it matches the starting position of the following algorithms. As you follow
these algorithms, you will find the cube being solved before your eyes! Get
ready!

ALGORITHMS FOR BUILDING THE WHITE

CROSS
Algorithm 1: Moving Up the White Side Piece
As you’re building the white cross, you may find the structure shown below
(the blue and red could be any two colors as long as they are in the position
shown). If that’s the case, proceed to the following algorithm .
This algorithm will shift the white side piece in the bottom row into the first
row without messing up your two other white pieces.

Algorithm 2: Moving the White Side Piece Diagonally

You’ll know you’re close to solving the first part after you find yourself in
this position. This will move the white side piece on top and will align the
red with its red center piece .
This algorithm will shift the white-red side piece in the middle row into the
first row without messing up the rest of your cross.

Congrats! You should have a white cross by now!

The tricky part now is… having the white side pieces aligned with the all
the adjacent center pieces -except yellow- (remember the Correct Way to
Do It picture shown in the beginning?). A very likely situation you will find
yourself in is the following :
For this particular algorithm, the blue center piece will be your front face.
Notice that the red side piece and the blue side piece should be swapped.
Yup, there’s also an algorithm for that.

Algorithm 3: Swapping the Side Pieces

Once you have found that your cube resembles the image above, position
the cube so that the blue center piece is facing you. Again, the colors in the
example are blue and red but they could be any other color as long as
they’re in the same position. Proceed to the algorithm:

And voila! Both side pieces have swapped places!

Use these three algorithms as benchmarks to gauge how close you are to
solving the first phase. It takes a little practice but I’m sure you’ll get it
down! The Rubik’s cube is a challenge but, like all challenges, you can
overcome it through constant trial and error.

Pep Talk: You will find your own way to solve it once you get the hang of
it. Don’t worry if it’s a different order once you get it- there are so many
possibilities! It’s not impossible- keep at it! If you don’t give up, you will
solve it, even sooner than you might think! The key is to just keep trying,
twisting and turning until you get it. It might have many steps, but this
puzzle is worth solving and you will feel so accomplished if you keep at it!

Now that the white cross is solved, (Congrats, Rubik’s puzzle warrior-
Phase 1 is complete!) you can move on to solving the white corners.
Keep at it and don’t give up, you are a warrior, after all!
PUTTING THE WHITE CORNERS
IN THEIR PLACE
Objective: Solve for the white corners and complete the white face.

Pointers:

Before starting, locate the white corner pieces, there’s only 4 of

them.
During the process, it will be necessary to do a lot of shifting and
turning of rows so that they may match the algorithms.

ALGORITHMS FOR PUTTING THE WHITE CORNERS IN

THEIR PLACE
Algorithm 4: Corner Piece Vertical Shift
Inspect your cube and chances are that by turning the bottom row a few
times you will find the following structure. Score! With the red center piece
facing you (or any color(s) that match(es) the image below), proceed to the
algorithm.
This algorithm will shift the white corner piece to the top in the correct
position.

Algorithm 5: Corner Piece Adjacent Vertical Shift

Same as the position above, the white corner piece is in the lower right
corner of the cube, but with the white facing the adjacent side. Make sure
your cube matches the structure below and proceed.

This algorithm will shift the corner piece to the top white face in the correct
position.
Algorithm 6: Digging out the Corner Piece
Again, the white corner piece is the lower right corner, but in this case the
white is facing down. This algorithm will reposition the white corner piece
into a more favorable position (it won’t solve it) .
After concluding this algorithm, make sure to use one of the two previous
algorithms to finish positioning the white corner piece on the top white
face.

Again, in this case the white corner piece is in the lower right corner, but
with the white facing down.

The following algorithm will put it in place so that you can use the previous
two algorithms to shift it to the top.

Keep at it until you get the white face completed!

Got it? You did it! Victory is yours! Keep going- more solutions are
ahead. But take a moment first to do your own puzzle warrior victory
dance! Now we are going to move on to the next phase!
SOLVING THE MIDDLE ROW!
Objective: Solve the Middle Row by maneuvering the side pieces into their
correct position.

In this image, the completed white face is facing down and we’ve solved for
the middle row.

Pointers:

Before starting this phase, flip the cube so that the yellow center
piece is facing up. We will solve this phase with the yellow center
piece facing up. Notice how the white face you completed will be
facing down.
Notice how the Middle Row has only 4 side pieces. These are the
pieces we will be working with. Locate them: Red-Blue, Blue-
Orange, Orange-Green, and Green-Red.
It may be necessary to turn the top and middle rows to position your
cube for the following algorithms. The only row that you’re not
allowed to move is the bottom one (where the white face is) unless
you 100% need to.
ALGORITHMS FOR SOLVING THE MIDDLE ROW
Algorithm 7: Adjacent Side Piece Rotation
You need only two algorithms for solving those 4 middle pieces and this is
the first one. Locate the side piece you want moved and where it should be.
Rotate the top or middle rows accordingly if necessary. Once your side piece
is on the top face as in the illustration below, proceed .

This Algorithm will rotate the side piece on the adjacent face (in this the
green-orange piece) and place it between the two center pieces where it
belongs.

Algorithm 8: Side Piece Front Rotation

This is the other possible scenario. Locate the side piece you want moved
and where it should be. Rotate the top row if necessary. Once your side piece
is on the top face as in the illustration below, then proceed.
This algorithm will rotate the side piece (green-orange) on top of your
center piece so that it can be exactly between the two center pieces where it
belongs.

There is also a third possibility... You may encounter a situation in which

no other edges are available for movement. In that case, you just need to
perform any of these two algorithms in order to put your edge pieces in a
more favorable position. Afterwards, repeat any of the two previous
algorithms accordingly.

Congratulations, you have now completed the first two rows! Ready for
phase 4? We’re almost at the finish line now! We’re going for the top
layer next. This takes two steps, so buckle down, get a drink of water
and get ready to twist and turn!
BUILDING THE YELLOW CROSS!
Objective: Building the Yellow Cross (with the corresponding side pieces
in place).

Yellow Cross completed with its 4 side pieces matching all the center pieces
(except white).

Pointers:

This step will be nearly identical to solving the white cross, only
easier because you have only the top row to worry about.
You need not move the Middle or Bottom Row.

ALGORITHMS FOR BUILDING THE YELLOW CROSS

Algorithm 9: Spawning the Yellow Cross
In this step, you will encounter 3 different scenarios:

A Yellow “L”: If your cube looks like the image below, then
position your cube so it matches the image and proceed to the
algorithm. After doing the algorithm once, you will get a Yellow
‘Line’. Do the algorithm one more time and you should have a
yellow cross. If not, repeat until you have a yellow cross.
A Yellow “Line”: Proceed with the algorithm using any center
piece as reference. Repeat until you have the yellow cross.
The Yellow Cross (yeah, if you’re lucky, you will have the yellow
cross made for you already!): Skip this algorithm and go to the
next, lucky you!

This is the yellow ‘L’. Repeat this algorithm until you find yourself with the
yellow cross. Make sure to stop once you have the yellow cross. If you do it
one time too many, you will have to start over!
You have the yellow cross, but don’t celebrate just yet… There is a
chance that the sides from the yellow face do not match the center pieces
(getting some white cross déjà vu here?). If that’s the case, proceed to
Algorithm 10 !

Algorithm 10: Completing the Yellow Cross. Swapping the Side Pieces.
Alright! You may need to turn the top row a few times (even if it disrupts
another matching side piece). Position your cube so that it matches the
image below and begin the algorithm.

In this particular case, the orange center piece is your front face. Notice
that the green and orange pieces should swap. This algorithm will fix that.
Do you see your yellow cross? Congratulations! Let’s continue on the
yellow brick road! Dorothy, don’t forget Toto!
YELLOW CORNERS IN POSITION!
Objective: Put all the Yellow Corners in the correct position, but not
necessarily in the correct orientation.

As you can see in cube above, the circled corner piece is in the correct
position. Even though its orientation is messed up (the colors are facing the
wrong direction), it’s the piece that belongs in the middle of the yellow, red
and green faces.
Pointers:

Inspect the corners of your cube. You will find that at least one of
the four corners is in the correct position (though most likely in the
wrong orientation).

Notice that the other corners (usually the other three) are in the
wrong positions and wrong orientations. Our goal is to shift them
into their correct positions.
ALGORITHMS FOR POSITIONING THE YELLOW
CORNERS
Algorithm 11: Shifting Corners
Start by locating the corner already in the right position (but wrong
orientation). As stated above, there will always be at least one of them.
Proceed to hold the cube so that corner is in the upper right most part of the
cube. In the illustration below, you would have the RED face facing you
while proceeding with the algorithm.

As we solve the algorithm, you will notice that the other corner pieces will
also shift into their correct position.
Repeat the algorithm until all pieces are in position (but not necessarily
right orientation). Note that it may take more than a few tries.
If you encounter a cube with no corners in the right place… Just proceed
with the algorithm using any face as reference (with the yellow face on
top). You will soon find your first corner in the right position. Afterwards,
continue with the algorithm until all corners are in the right position.
COMPLETING THE CUBE:
YELLOW CORNERS IN CORRECT
POSITION
Objective: Shift the yellow corners so that they are all in the correct
orientation and complete the Rubik’s cube!

A Completed Rubik’s Cube!

Pointers:

This last step can be tricky as you will see your cube get scrambled
in the process. Don’t worry, it’ll all work out in the end.
Take note of your starting position (the face you will use as
reference). In this last phase, your starting position doesn’t change at
all. Keep that in mind.

ALGORITHMS FOR COMPLETING THE CUBE

Algorithm 12: 6 Times and Done!
We’re finally here! At this point, your cube should look something like the
illustration below. All corners should be in position (though it’s likely that
most will be in the wrong orientation). Take note of your starting position
(or reference). Following the logic of the cube below, your front face would
be the ORANGE face and the incomplete corner would be in the upper
right. Once you’re ready, proceed with the algorithm.

You already know this algorithm, it’s the first one we did! Anyways, repeat
the algorithm until your corner piece is in the right position and orientation
(it may take multiple tries) .

Yes! One corner down, most likely three to go!

Now, I want you to be careful here. Without changing the face you’re using
as reference, turn the top Yellow Face clockwise or counterclockwise (as
illustrated below) so that another uncompleted corner piece is occupying
the upper right side of your cube.
OR
Once you’ve done that, repeat the previous algorithm Six Times and Done!
Boom! You’ve got another yellow corner solved. Now repeat this for the
two remaining yellow corner pieces.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Guess what?

You did it!

You’ve just completed the world’s most famous puzzle!

Congratulations! If you’ve done everything correctly thus far, your
cube should look a little something like this:

You’ve solved a puzzle that has stumped many a worthy fellow or lady.

TWISTED TRIVIA
As you’re sharing your newly-acquired cubing skills with your friends,
you’ll want to know these. This cube trivia and fun facts will not only make
your accomplishment seem that much more amazing, but will make your
friends eager to learn about this nifty little cube. The more the merrier,
right?

TRIVIA #1
Yes! We covered this one already but it’s worth re-mentioning. There’s over
43 quintillion possible cube combinations. For those who want the exact
number, here it is: 43,252,003,274,489,856,000. I don’t even know how to
say this number, just know that it’s very, very, big.
TRIVIA #2
Well, to sum it up… If arranging each combination took you one second,
then the amount of time it would take to finish all combinations would be
longer than the time the universe has been in existence. Try to wrap your
mind around that one!

TRIVIA #3
Erno Rubik, a Hungarian professor and architect, designed the cube as sort
of a classroom activity for his students. Little did he know it was to become
the world’s most famous puzzle!
TRIVIA #4
Though professor Rubik was a geometrical genius, he was not very creative
coming up with names, it seems. The first given name to his creation was
the Magic Cube. After the widespread critical acclaim that followed, the
cube adopted the professor’s name.

TRIVIA #5
Professor Rubik has admitted that it takes him longer than a minute to solve
his own cube! That’s amazing considering people a fraction of his age are
solving it in less than 10 seconds. Actually, it took him over a month to
solve it when he first created it. Moral of the story: don’t feel bad if you
don’t solve the cube right away!
TRIVIA #6
It was a Czech woman named Jessica Fridrich who came up with what is
known today as the Friedrich Method, one of the fastest methods used for
speedcubing! The fastest cubers in the world have based their technique off
hers. She’s amazing!

TRIVIA #7
This cube isn’t going away anytime soon. As the years have gone by, more
and more companies have put their spin on it. Also, every year, tons of kids
are getting older, meaning that there’s more possible customers!
TRIVIA #8
Fred Cueller, founder of Diamond Cutters International, is responsible for
making the world’s most expensive Rubik’s Cube. The 1.5 Million Dollar
Cube made out of 18K gold, emeralds, rubies, among other precious stones.

TRIVIA #9
During the first ever Rubik’s Cube World Championship, the winner held a
record time of 22.95 seconds. As of today, 2018, the fastest cuber in the
world trumps this number at 4.59 seconds.
TRIVIA #10
The first-ever solution guide for this puzzle was written in 1980, by a
schoolboy named Patrick Bossert. It became an instant best-seller!

TRIVIA #11
Are you from Tennesse? Well, this cube is! The world’s largest cube
(standing at 3 meters tall and weighting over 1100 pounds) can be found in
Knoxville, Tennesse.
TRIVIA #12
We’re actually hurting this statistic with this book. Nevertheless, as of
today, less than 5.8% of the world’s population can solve this tricky puzzle.

TRIVIA #13
The original rubik’s cube is a 3x3 cube. If you look online you will find that
there’s also 2x2s, 4x4s, and even 17x17s! I can’t even begin to imagine…
TRIVIA #14
Wait, what? The world record (for robots) for solving the cube is 0.637
seconds. Whoa.

TRIVIA #15
Polish cuber Jakub Kipa is known for having solved the puzzle using only
his feet in under 20 seconds. His polish brethren Marcin Kowalczyk did it
under 22 seconds completely blindfolded! Way to make the rest of the world
feel dumb, guys!
TRIVIA #16
The 2006 movie The Pursuit of Happyness helped spike up cube sales
worldwide because of its famous trailer where it depicts Will Smith solving
a Rubik’s Cube. The Cube has re-entered trending territory ever since.

TRIVIA #17
Dan Knights solved the cube while hurling through the skies at over 130
miles per hour. He did it in under 32 seconds! Jump on Youtube and type in
Rubik’s Cube Freefall and you’ll find the video, along with videos of others
who have taken their shot at this amazing feat!
TRIVIA #18
Go online and search for other kinds of cubes. You will find Mirror Cubes,
Gray Cubes (only 6 shades), Sudoku Cubes, Braille Cubes (even for the
blind!), etc. This challenge has just begun!
