DIFFERENT TYPES OF ISSUES


 SOCIAL ISSUE is a group of common problems in present-day society that many
people strive to solve.

Examples: overpopulation, gender inequality, poverty, and homelessness

EXAMPLES OF REAL-LIFE SCENARIOS

Social Issues:
1. John and his family have been living in a small apartment in the city for years, but the
rent keeps increasing every year. They are struggling to make ends meet, and finding a new
affordable place to live seems impossible.
2. Maria, a woman and recent immigrant to the United States, is struggling to find a job
because she's facing discrimination from potential employers who judge her based on her
accent and nationality.

3. Mary lives in a low-income neighborhood where the schools are underfunded and poorly
equipped. She wants to go to college, but she's not sure she'll be able to get the education
she needs to succeed.

 MORAL ISSUE concerns the internal - your values, beliefs, feelings, and
learnings that are often subjective and concern yourself to discover your morality.
It has the potential to help or harm others.

Examples: corruption, manipulation, prostitution, extramarital and pre-marital relationship,


and physical and mental abuses

EXAMPLES OF REAL-LIFE SCENARIOS

1. Mark is struggling to keep up with his workload and decides to call in sick to take a day
off. He tells his boss that he's sick, but in reality, he just needs a break.

2. Tom is out shopping when he sees a nice watch in a store. He thinks he can get away
with stealing it, so he puts it in his pocket and walks out of the store without paying.

3. Alex sees a man on the street being robbed at gunpoint, but he's too scared to report it to
the police, so he walks away and does nothing.

 ECONOMIC ISSUE is that being faced by the world economy, as well as regions
and countries.

Examples: prospects for growth, inflation, energy and the environment, inequality, labor
issues, emerging markets, and the impact of new technologies.

EXAMPLES OF REAL-LIFE SCENARIOS

1. Mae, a middle-income earner, notices that the price of groceries has significantly
increased over the past year. Despite receiving a small salary increment, she finds it
increasingly difficult to afford the same quantity of essential items for her family.

2. Jane is on a fixed income, but the cost of living keeps going up. She's struggling to afford
necessities like food, housing, and healthcare.

3. The government has proposed a new tax law that would benefit the wealthy and large
corporations but would increase taxes for middle-class and low-income families.

DIRECTIONS: Get a partner. Read and analyze the given news article. Then, indicate
whether a social issue, moral issue, or economic issue is being presented. Elaborate the
problem presented in the article and suggest a possible solution to address it. Be ready to
explain your work in our class.

Ateneo dismisses student caught bullying

Ateneo president Father Jett Villarin also asks the public not to be part of the cycle of
bullying: 'We can begin by refusing to add fuel to the fire and helping our children and one
another heal'
MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila Junior High School student who was caught
on video bullying another will be dismissed, Ateneo de Manila University president Fr Jose
Ramon “Jett” Villarin announced on Sunday, December 23.
“After a thorough investigation that included listening to all parties involved, the
administration decides to impose the penalty of DISMISSAL on the student caught bullying
another student in the comfort room of the school,” he said in a statement posted on Ateneo
de Manila University’s Twitter and Facebook on Sunday.
Villarin also announced the creation of a task force to “conduct a comprehensive study” of
how Ateneo’s anti-bullying policies and processes are implemented. He was referring to
policies in Ateneo’s Student Handbook.

ANNOTATION:
This part of the lesson shows the idea of RECONSTRUCTIONISM. Learners are engaged
to deal with the different social issues. This is done through inquiry, dialogue, and multiple
perspective. It is part of their community-based learning.

Our country has many problems that must be given solutions. At an early age, you must feel
a sense of commitment to your community. It is important to take part in improving the
quality of life.

Listed on the board are some of the issues being discussed today. Choose 3 issues or
problem that you think needs an immediate solution. Rank them 1 as the highest and 3 as
the lowest. Remember to identify what type of issue the problems you mentioned reflect.
