QUESTION 1
1.1 Mr Brown conducted a survey on the amount of airtime (in rands) EACH student had on
his or her cellphone. He summarised the data in the box and whisker diagram below.

1.1.1 Write down the five-number summary of the data. (2)

1.1.2 Determine the interquartile range. (1)

1.1.3 Comment on the skewness of the data. (1)

1.2 A group of 13 students indicated how long it took (in hours) before their cellphone
batteries required recharging. The information is given in the table below.

5 8 10 17 20 29 32 48 50 50 63 𝑦 107

1.2.1 Calculate the value of y if the mean for this data set is 41 . (2)

1.2.2 If y  94 , calculate the standard deviation of the data. (1)

1.2.3 The mean time before another group of 6 students needed to recharge the batteries of
their cellphones was 18 hours. Combine these groups and calculate the overall mean time
needed for these two groups to recharge the batteries of their cellphones. (2)

QUESTION 2
A school held a sports day. One of the items on the programme was an obstacle race.
Teams of 10 parents and learners participated in this race. The table below shows the
time taken, in minutes, by each member of a particular team to complete the race.

4 12 13 16 17 18 20 22 22 25

2.1 How long, in minutes, did it take for the fastest member of this team to complete the (1)
race?
2.2 Determine the mean time taken by this team. (2)
2.3 Calculate the standard deviation for the data. (1)
2.4 How many members of the team completed the obstacle race outside of two standard
deviations of the mean? (3)
2.5 It took another team a total time of x  5 minutes to complete the race. Calculate the
value of x if the overall mean of the two teams combined was 18 minutes. (3)

QUESTION 3

A survey was conducted of the ages of players at a soccer tournament. The results are
shown in the cumulative frequency graph (Ogive) below.

3.1 How many players took part in the soccer tournament? (1)

3.2 Determine the number of players between the ages of 24 and 31 years old. (2)

3.3 Complete the frequency column of the table below in the DIAGRAM SHEET.

(3)
3.4 Use the grid provided in the DIAGRAM SHEET to draw a frequency polygon for the
data. (4)

QUESTION 4
A survey was conducted amongst 60 boys and 60 girls in grade 11 relating to their
participation in sport. 20 girls did not participate in any sport and 50 boys did
participate in a sport.

4.1 Complete a two way contingency table for the above survey. (5)

4.2 What is the probability that if a grade 11 learner is chosen at random that:

4.2.1 It is a girl and participates in sport? (1)

4.2.2 The learner does not participate in sport and is not female? (1)

QUESTION 5
5.1 A bag contains 3 blue marbles and 2 red marbles. A marble is taken from the bag, the
colour is recorded and the marble is put aside. A second marble is taken from the bag,
the colour is recorded and then put aside.

5.1.1 Draw a tree diagram to represent the information above. Show the probabilities
(3)
associated with EACH branch, as well as the possible outcomes.
5.1.2 Determine the probability of first taking a red marble and then taking a blue marble, in
(2)
that order.
5.2 A and B are two events. The probability that event A will occur is 0,4 and the
probability that event B will occur is 0,3 . The probability that either event A or event B
will occur is 0,58 .
5.2.1 Are events A and B mutually exclusive?
(3)
Justify your answer with appropriate calculations.
5.2.2 Are events A and B independent?
(3)

QUESTION 6

6.1 For any two events, 𝐴 and 𝐵, it is given that P  A   0, 48 and P  B  0, 26 .

Determine:

6.1.1 P  A and B  if A and B are independent events. (2)

6.1.2 P  A and B  if A and B are mutually exclusive events (2)

6.2 A survey was conducted among 130 Grade 11 learners to establish which snack they
prefer to eat while they watch television. The results were summarised in the Venn
diagram below. However, some information is missing.

6.2.1 If 29 learners prefer at least two types of snacks, calculate the value of x and y . (3)

snack or no snack while watching television. (3)
