Discussion Questions
• Why do you think Ren is trying to put so many things
in her bed?
• What is Mom doing while Ren is putting things in her bed?
• What is Dad doing while Ren is putting things in her bed?
• What do you like to have in your bed while you sleep?

Exploring the Story

• Write all the things that Ren tries to put in her bed: pet in a
jet; bell on a well; hen in a pen; ten men; Bess and Tess and
Ben and Len.
Discuss how words such as pet, jet, bell, and well have the
short e sound. Find other words in the story that have the
same sound (bed, get, Ren).

• Teach children this variation on the traditional nursery rhyme

Go to Bed, Tom:
Get to bed, Ren. Get to bed, Ren.
Tired or not, Ren, get to bed, Ren.

• Have children substitute their own names for Ren’s. What

other variations could be created? (Get to work, Ren. Get to
class, Ren. Get to gym, Ren. Get to lunch, Ren.)

• Have a “Get to Bed” day. Children can keep a favorite

stuffed animal or doll nearby throughout the day.
