General Instructions:

• There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.

• This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and

Section E. All the sections are compulsory.

• Section A contains eighteen MCQ of 1 mark each, Section B contains seven questions

of two marks each, Section C contains five questions of three marks each, section D

contains three long questions of five marks each and Section E contains two case

study-based questions of 4 marks each.

• There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in section

B, C, D and E. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.

• Use of calculators is not allowed.

25. A star of mass twice the solar mass and radius 106 km rotates about its axis with an

angular speed of 10-6 /s. What is the angular speed of the star when it collapses to a

radius of 104 km. (Solar mass = 1.99×1023 kg)

26. The frequency of vibration (v) of a string mass depends upon length (l) of the string,

tension (T) in the string and mass per unit length (m) of the string. Use method of

dimensions for establishing the formula for frequency.

27. Define Gravitational potential energy hence deduce an expression for gravitational

potential energy of a body placed at a point near the surface of earth,

CASE STUDY

29. A simple pendulum can be described as a device where its point mass is attached to a

light inextensible string and suspended from a fixed support. The vertical line passing

through the fixed support is the mean position of a simple pendulum. The vertical
distance between the point of suspension and the centre of mass of the suspended

body (when it is in mean position) is called the length of the simple pendulum

denoted by L. This form of the pendulum is based on the resonant system having a

single resonant frequency.

(a) What will be the time period of a simple pendulum at the centre of the earth?

(b) What will be the length of the seconds pendulum?

(c) The time period of a simple pendulum is 2s. What will be the time period if its

length is increased to 4 times its original length?

A simple pendulum is suspended from the roof of a lift. If the lift accelerates upwards

with acceleration a, what will be its time period?

30. Gravitation or just gravity is the force of attraction between any two bodies. All the

objects in the universe attract each other with a certain amount of force, but in most of

the cases, the force is too weak to be observed due to the very large distance of

separation. Besides, gravity’s range is infinite, but the effect becomes weaker as

objects move away.

(a) Escape speed of a cat of mass m is v on the surface of earth. What will be the

escape speed of a dog of mass 2m on the surface of earth?

(b) If we move from equator to pole, how does the acceleration due to gravity vary?

(c) What will be the value of g at the bottom of sea 7 km deep? (R = 6400km, g =

9.8m/s2)

31. State and prove Bernoulli’s theorem with a neat diagram.

(c) Derive an expression for the height of liquid raised in a capillary tube dipped

vertically in a liquid which wets the walls of capillary tube.

32. (a) State parallelogram law of vectors addition. Find the magnitude and direction of

the resultant vector of two vectors P and Q inclined at an angle θ with each other.

(b) Two forces each of 4N acts on a body at an angle of 60°. Find the magnitude and

the direction of the resultant force acting on the body.

What is a projectile? Give examples. Show that the path followed by a projectile fired

horizontally from certain height is parabolic. Derive expression for:

(i) Time of flight

(ii) Horizontal range

33. Obtain an expression for the maximum speed with which a vehicle can safely

negotiate a curved rough road banked at an angle θ.

OR

Define angle of repose. Show that angle of friction is equal to angle of repose.
