Project Summary
The EMAI Programme is a two-year (120 ECTS) Joint Master Degree that provides a comprehensive framework
of theory and practice in the field of Artificial lntelligence (Al). The Programme, based in four European research
universities, will give the students the foundational knowledge needed to explore both key contextual areas and
complex technical applications of Al systems.
The four universities involved are top academic institutions representing world-leading research in Europe:
Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona (Spain), Sapienza University of Rome in Rome (Italy), Radboud University
in Nijmegen (The Netherlands), and University of Ljubljana in Ljubljana (Slovenia). In addition, the consortium
includes prestigious associated partners, including the UCL Centre for Artificial lntelligence.
The structure of the Programme is divided into four semesters. All students will spend their first semester in UPF
(Barcelona), and continue the second semester in any of the other consortium member universities (Italy,
Netherlands, and Slovenia). For the second year, they may choose among all consortium member universities
and specialize in one of the four offered strands, which reflect the diverse expertise and excellence at the
consortium members (intelligent decision making in Spain, robotics in Italy, cyber-security in The Netherlands,
and data science in Slovenia). The specialization involves the development of a Master Thesis Project, working
closely in one of the academic research groups, or in an industrial environment.
EMAI students will participate in two special events: the UCL summer school in London, where they will receive
entrepreneurship training and have the opportunity to meet industry experts from companies with deep technical
expertise in Al, and the three-day Spring Event in one of the member universities, where 1st and 2nd years
students will meet and participate in discussions about Ethics, trustworthy Al, and European regulations.
