Thanks for purchasing this quilt pattern from Kohatu Patterns.

River Rapids is a jelly-roll friendly quilt pattern that is suitable for beginner quilters. Once
finished your Quilt should measure approximately 53" x 80".

General Notes:

 Seam allowances are ¼”

 Seams are pressed open at times and to the side at others. Please take note of these throughout
the pattern
 Pattern assumes the useable width of fabric to be 42” wide
 Directional fabrics are not recommended for this pattern

Materials Required: Tip: This Pattern is great for Jelly Rolls! I used a
Jelly Roll of Blueberry Park by Karen Lewis Textiles.
(Yardage is based on 112cm (42") fabric width).

 1 Jelly Roll or Forty (40) 2.5" x WOF Strips (42-44")

 Contrast/White quilting cotton: 1 ¼ Yard
 Wadding/Batting: 59" x 86" Common Quilt Pattern Abbreviations:
 Backing Fabric: 3 ½ Yards
 Binding: ½ Yard  RST – Right Sides Together
 Co-ordinating Thread  WST – Wrong Sides Together
 WOF – Width of Fabric

Cutting Instructions:

From Contrast/White Fabric – Cut Fourteen (14) 2 ½” WOF strips, then

 Sub-cut Forty (40) strips 2.5" x 14"

Square up and cut selvages off ONE end of each of the WOF jelly roll strips

Construction and Sewing Instructions

Put your coloured jelly roll strips in the order you wish them to go into the quilt from top to bottom.

With RST sew a Contrast/White 14" strip to the squared end of each of the jelly roll strips using a ¼"
seam. Keep them in order.

Iron each strip ensuring the seam is pressed open and then move to the cutting table.

Take the first strip and measure 12" from the seam onto your long strip and cut where the dotted line
indicates.

Now take your cut end and with right sides together sew it to the other side of your Contrast/White
block with selvedge end out as below:

12" 

Selvedge

Tip: Leave selvages on one side of your strips until all 40 strips have been sewn together. This will help you remember
which side you are using to line up when joining the next strip.

Take your next strip, measure and cut 13" from the seam at the dotted line as per the diagram as below:

Once again take the selvage end and sew it RST to the other end of the Contrast/White:

Press the seams open and then line both strips up from the cut edge and join as shown:

For the third cut increase your measurement to 14".

Press the long seam to one side and then line both strips up from the cut edge and with RST sew
together:

14" 

Tip: Line up each row against the cut side to get a straight edge and
evenly spaced steps.

For the fourth and consequtive strips cut using the measurements in the table below:

Strip 4 15" Strip 13 12" Strip 22 13" Strip 31 16"

Strip 5 16" Strip 14 13" Strip 23 12" Strip 32 15"

To prepare your backing fabric:

Lay out the fabric and trim off the selvedges.

Cut in the fabric in half from the selvedge edge as shown below:

Selvedge

Sew the two halves back together along the selvedge edge using a ¼” seam and press the seam to one
side.

To Baste your quilt:

Place your backing fabric with right side down on a large flat surface. Lay your quilt batting /wadding on
top of the backing followed by your quilt top (right side up).

Sandwich your top with wadding and fabric backing and use safety pins or fabric basting glue to hold it in
place. Then quilt in the ditch using straight lines across the width of your quilt.

I recommend using a thread the same colour as your solid strips.

After quilting, measure 53" from the left/cut

side and then cut the selvedges off the right
Quilt Stitching edge of your quilt and square your quilt up.

Bind the quilt using your favourite colour fabric

by cutting WOF strips. Sew the strips end to
end on a 45 degree angle to reduce bulk. Press
binding in half lengthwise.

Bind using your preferred binding method

starting and finishing from the bottom centre
of the quilt.

Congratulations! You have finished your quilt!
