Type-01 : Basic Applications
1. A racing car accelerates on a straight road from rest to a speed of 180 km/hr in 25 s.
Assuming uniform acceleration of the car throughout, find the distance covered in this
time.
2. An object accelerates uniformly along a straight track with acceleration of 10 m/s 2. At t = 0,
it is at x = -8 m and moving with a velocity of 3 m/s.
(i) What is the position of the object at t = 3 s?
(ii) What is the velocity of the object at t = 3 s?
3. A particle moving with uniform acceleration has a velocity of 12 cm/s in the positive x
direction when its x-coordinate is 3 cm. If its x-coordinate 2 seconds later is -5 cm, what is
its acceleration?
4. A particle moving with uniform acceleration from A to B along a straight line has velocities
v1 and v2 at A and B respectively. If C is the mid-point between A and B, then determine the
velocity of the particle at C.
Type-02 : Reaction Time / Stopping Distance
5. A car was moving at the rate of 36 km/hr. When brakes were applied, it came to rest in a
distance of 200 m. Calculate the retardation produced in the car.
6. A bullet travelling with a velocity of 16 m/s penetrates a tree trunk and comes to rest in 0.4
m. Find the time taken during the retardation.
7. A car moving along a straight highway with a speed of 72 km/hr is brought to a stop within
a distance of 100 m. What is the retardation of the car and how long does it take for the car
to stop?
8. A car moving along a straight highway with speed of 126 km/hr is brought to a stop within a
distance of 200 m. What is the retardation of the car (assumed uniform) and how long does
it take for the car to stop?
9. A truck is travelling at a constant velocity of 10 m/s. When the driver sees a child 50 m in
front of him on the road, he hits the brakes to stop the truck. The truck decelerates at a
rate of 1.25 m/s2. His reaction time to hit the brakes is 0.5 s. Will the truck hit the child?
Show with proper calculations.
10. The reaction time for an automobile driver is 0.6 s. If the automobile can be decelerated at
5 m/s2, calculate the total distance travelled in coming to stop from an initial velocity of 30
km/hr after a signal is observed.
11. A bullet fired into a fixed target loses half of its velocity after penetrating 3 cm. How much
further will it penetrate before coming to rest assuming that it faces constant resistance to
motion? (AIEEE 2005 ; Delhi 2018)
Type-03 : Meeting / Collision / Overtaking
12. Two trains- one travelling at 72 km/hr and other at 90 km/hr are heading towards one
another along a straight level track. When they are 1 km apart, both the drivers
simultaneously see the other’s train and apply brakes which retard each train at the rate of
1 m/s2. Determine whether the trains would collide or not.
13. Two trains A and B of length 400 m each are moving on two parallel tracks with a uniform
speed of 72 km/hr in the same direction, with A ahead of B. The driver of B decides to
overtake A and accelerates by 1 m/s2. If after 50 s, the guard of B just brushes past the driver
of A, what was the original distance between them? (NCERT)
14. A bus starts moving with an acceleration 2 m/s2. A cyclist 96 m behind the bus starts
simultaneously towards the bus at a constant speed of 20 m/s.
(i) After what time, will the cyclist be able to overtake the bus?
(ii) After sometime, the bus will be left behind. If the bus continues moving with the
same acceleration, after what time from the beginning, the bus will overtake the
cyclist?
15. A bus starts from rest with a constant acceleration of 5 m/s2. At the same time, a car
travelling with a constant velocity of 50 m/s overtakes and passes the bus.
(i) Find at what distance will the bus overtake the car?
(ii) How fast will the bus be travelling then?
16. A burglar’s car had a start with an acceleration of 2 m/s2. A police vigilant party came after
5 seconds and continued to chase the burglar’s car with a uniform velocity of 20 m/s. Find
the time in which the police van overtakes the burglar’s car.
Type-04 : Miscellaneous Problems
17. A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly for 10 s to a velocity of 8 m/s. It then runs
at a constant velocity and is finally brought to rest in 64 m with a constant retardation. The
total distance covered by the car is 584 m. Find the values of acceleration, retardation and
total time taken.
18. A car, starting from rest, accelerates at the rate ‘f’ through a distance ‘s’, then continues at
constant speed for some time ‘t’ and then decelerates at the rate ‘f/2’ to come to rest. If the
total distance is ‘5s’, then prove that s = (1/2)ft2.(AIEEE 2005)
19. A hundred meter sprinter increases her speed from rest uniformly at the rate of 1 m/s 2 up
to three-quarters of the total run and covers the last quarter with uniform speed. How
much time does she take to cover the first half and the second half of the run?
20. At a distance 400 m from the traffic light, brakes are applied to a locomotive moving with a
velocity of 54 km/hr. Determine the position of the locomotive relative to the traffic light 1
minute after the application of the brakes if its acceleration is -0.3 m/s2.
21. The greatest acceleration or deceleration that a train may have is ‘a’. Calculate the
minimum time in which the train may reach from one station to the other separated by a
distance ‘d’.
22. A car accelerates from rest at a constant rate α for some time and then decelerates at a
constant rate β to come to rest. The total time elapsed is ‘t’. Find-
(i) the maximum velocity attained by the car
(ii) total distance travelled by the car
23. A particle starts from rest and travels a distance ‘s’ with uniform acceleration, then it
travels a distance ‘2s’ with uniform speed, finally it travels a distance ‘3s’ with uniform
retardation and comes to rest. If the complete motion of the particle is a straight line, then
calculate the ratio of its average velocity to maximum velocity.
24. A body starting from rest accelerates uniformly at the rate of 10 cm/s2 and retards
uniformly at the rate of 20 cm/s2. Find the least time in which it can complete the journey
of 5 km if the maximum velocity attained by the body is 72 km/hr.
25. A car moving with a speed of 50 km/hr can be stopped by brakes after at least 6 m. What
will be the minimum stopping distance if the same car is moving at a speed of 100 km/hr?

38. A hot air balloon rises upwards with a constant speed of 10 m/s. When the balloon is at a

49. A particle is projected vertically upwards from a point A on the ground. It takes t 1 time to
reach a point B but it still continues to move up. If it takes further t 2 time to reach the
ground from point B, then calculate the height of point B from the ground.
