THE
Blue Whale
IN URUGUAY
The blue whale is a marine mammal. It
can be 30 meters long and weigh up to
150,000 kg. It’s the largest animal in the
world!

They are very fast swimmers and have huge skeletons. They eat mostly fish, so
they are carnivorous. They can live between 80 and 90 years in the wild. They live
less in captivity.

They are viviparous. Baby whales are called “calves” and they can be 8 meters
long and weigh 2,500 kg. They put on 90 kg each day!!!

In Uruguay, they are in danger of extinction because

they were hunted in the past to produce oil. The
Whale and Dolphin Sanctuary protects them.

THE
Asian Tiger
The largest of all the Asian big cats, tigers rely
primarily on sight and sound rather than smell for
hunting. They typically hunt alone. A tiger can
consume more than 36k of meat at one time. They
generally hunt deer or other mammals.

On average, tigers give birth to 2 to 4 cubs every two years.

They can reach up to 20 years of age in the wild. Males of the CUB
larger subspecies, the continental tiger, may weigh up to 300 k.
Males are heavier than females.
They are found in the jungles of China, India and southeast Asia. In the past they
were hunted and their habitats were used to build cities and farms. Nowadays they
are protected.

POLLUTION
FACTS
POLLUTION is when something is added to the environment that is
harmful or poisonous to living things. There are four main types of pollution:
air, water, noise, and soil or land pollution.

AIR POLLUTION is usually caused by smoke or harmful

gases. It causes global warming and acid rain.

SOIL POLLUTION or land pollution is

produced by chemicals into the soil.

NOISE POLLUTION or sound pollution includes....

the sound of vehicles and loudspeakers.....
It can cause ear problems.....

WATER POLLUTION is the contamination of lakes, rivers,

oceans, aquifers, reservoirs and groundwater. Contaminants
come from industrial and agricultural activities, and urban runoff.

In the past, Uruguay was full of grasslands and forests with native
trees and bushes. Nowadays there are less green landscapes
because of agriculture, cows and sheep. The soil, water and air have
changed mainly in the cities. Less petroleum is being used. Many
buses and cars nowadays use electricity instead of gasoline. One
of the major environmental issues that we are facing is the disposal
of plastic. Plastic bottles can be recycled but tonnes of plastic end
up in landfills.

Read the text and answer YES or NO.

LET’S GROW vegetables

Last week, we had a wonderful experience at school.
We planted some vegetables in our garden.
On Monday, we planned the procedure. On Tuesday,
we prepared the soil. On Wednesday, we planted
lettuce and beetroot. We watered the plants, too. On
Thursday, we visited the garden and checked that
everything was ok. On Friday, we wrote and drew what
we had done in our notebooks.
Our plan is to take care of the vegetable garden and
