4x4. OK, so we are not specifically talking about speed and performance cars here, but we
are certainly talking about driving. And the great thing about this is that often it doesn’t
actually matter what the vehicle is, just that you can get the most out of it, and enjoy the
time that you slip behind the wheel. Maybe that’s at a Pay and Play site where you can just
do your thing, maybe it’s during an organised greenlaning trip, which may not necessarily
be that difficult or technical, but takes you away from the tarmac… and those boy racer
XR2 drivers! In some cases, it could be taking an off-road driving course, since it should be
remembered that we are not talking just about novices learning to drive, but also
experienced drivers being coached to drive even better. It’s been said before, but you never
stop learning, in fact, the day you think you have learnt enough is probably the day your
driving starts to deteriorate. The most important thing is the enjoyment we get from getting
behind the wheel of a 4x4. Long may that continue. Just don’t get me started on the
so-called benefits of driverless cars – this magazine is not for those sorts of people…
So, to all drivers, here’s hoping you enjoy the issue.

O
ne of the highlights of my year is the
annual Goodwood Revival show in
West Sussex. It proves a sell-out
every year over a long weekend in
mid September. The Revival celebrates the
golden age of motor racing from the 1940s,
‘50s and ‘60s.
As you would expect, most of the 4x4s
around are military Willys Jeeps and you get the
odd Land Rover Series pottering about. The
most impressive Series, however, is the recovery
truck that hurtles around the track to rescue
stranded machines, courtesy of Everymans
Garage in Chichester. It is resplendent in baby
blue and is a favourite of the crowd when it
appears. The Jeeps also get a great reception;
many of them proudly adorning lavish military
nostalgia stands and others ferrying the great

and we hope that many of our
readers do just that when the
opportunity presents itself. In order to
venture off the road, however, there are a
few essential things you must do
beforehand. And the first is to make sure
you actually know what you are doing

people think that because they own a

Making sure the battery has been disconnected, the wiring to the alternator is removed, which consists of
a multi-plug, earth lead and live (the latter two are secured with 10mm nuts)

On the offside front, there’s only a single brake pipe to disconnect. Brake fluid will leak out, so it’s
worthwhile draining it fully at this stage
19
The brake pipes to the rear brakes are routed underneath the
bodywork and chassis. They can be detached where they are
connected along the chassis, allowing the pipework to remain
attached to the bodywork and chassis
20
This particular vehicle has competition specification dampers with remote reservoirs, and the reservoirs

The last fittings to undo are for the rear bumper. It doesn’t need
to be completely removed, just the 10-12mm bolts undone that
secure the underside of the bumper onto the chassis
28
If any of the 14mm nuts outlined in the last two steps are seized, the only solution may be to cut them off
using an angle grinder and cutting disc. Space is often tight, making it difficult to cut through them
