Definition of Burns:

According to the W.H.O, a burn is an injury to the skin or other organic tissue primarily caused by heat or
due to radiation, radioactivity, electricity, friction or contact with chemicals.

Burn can simply be said to be caused by an exposure to heat or flame that causes damage to the skin in
different degrees.

A burn occurs when heat, chemicals, sunlight, electricity or radiation damages skin tissue. Most burns
happen accidentally.

Burns are characterized by severe skin damage that causes the affected cells to die. Most people can
recover from burns without serious health consequences.

Burns are quite common. About 1.5 million cases per year (in Nigeria).

There are different degrees of burns based on the amount of damage done to tissues.
