ENGLISH LANGUAGE 1

GRAMMAR: PRONOUN
A pronoun is a word used to replace a noun in a sentence. They
are used to avoid unnecessary repetition of a particular noun
while speaking. A pronoun is used to refer to a noun previously
mentioned. It can refer to people, things, places and concepts,
some pronouns are, he, she, it, myself, them, they, her, him,
something etc.
Example;
1. David and Daniel are friends and they are also neighbours.
2. Aisha is a girl. She loves going to school.
Passage A {without pronouns}
Jerry came first in the examination because Jerry worked hard.
Jerry’s teacher gave Jerry a present because Jerry’s teacher
wanted to encourage Jerry to work harder.
Passage B {with pronouns}
Jerry came first in the examination because he worked hard. His
teacher gave him a present because she wanted to encourage
him to work harder.

TYPES OF PRONOUNS
Pronouns are of different types. They are; Personal pronouns,
Possessive pronouns, Demonstrative pronouns, Interrogative
pronouns, Relative pronouns, and Reflexive pronouns. We
would focus on two major types;
1. Personal pronoun: personal pronouns are used to replace
names of particular person, place or thing spoken about in
a sentence. It is used to indicate the person speaking (first
person), the person spoken to (second person), the person
or thing spoken about (third person). A personal pronoun
shows the gender and number of the noun. They are, I,
you, him, she, her, he, they, them, me, and it.
First person pronouns have both singular and plural forms,
they are;
Singular: I, me
Plural: we, us
Note: ‘I’ and ‘we’ are used as subjects of a verb (they come in
front), while ‘me’ and ‘us’ are used as objects of a verb (they
come at the back).
Examples
a. I gave Ben a book.
b. Ben gave me a pen.
c. We beat them in the first game.
d. They beat us in the second game.
Class work
Make sentences with the first person plural and singular
respectively.
