Acknowledgements
When any book is written there are various people who need to be
thanked, and this one is no exception. First of all, I would like to
thank Andrea Keegan for the privilege of writing for this
prestigious series. Thanks are due also to Jenny Nugee and the
OUP team for their assistance throughout the writing and
publication process. I would also like to thank the anonymous
readers for their clear and helpful feedback on both the proposal
and the draft manuscript.
I am also very grateful to the staff at the Library at the British School
at Athens, where a significant portion of this book was written.
Finally, I would like to thank my wife Vicky for her suggestion that
I see whether OUP would be interested in a VSI on the Spartans
when I was musing about writing a popular book on Sparta, and
for her unstinting support throughout the whole process. It might
sound trite, but without her encouragement this book would
not exist.
