Exercise 5:

Exercise 7:
Let 𝑓𝑓 be a function of class 𝐶𝐶 2 over an interval [𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏], which means that 𝑓𝑓 and 𝑓𝑓′ are both
continuous and differentiable.
Suppose that there exists 𝑐𝑐 ∈]𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏[ such that 𝑓𝑓(𝑎𝑎) = 𝑓𝑓(𝑏𝑏) = 𝑓𝑓(𝑐𝑐). Show that there exists 𝑚𝑚 ∈
[𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏] such that 𝑓𝑓 ′′ (𝑚𝑚) = 0.
Hint: use Rolle's theorem three times.
Exercise 8:
Let 𝑓𝑓 be a continuous function over an interval [𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏] such that 𝑓𝑓(𝑎𝑎) = 𝑓𝑓(𝑏𝑏). Suppose that there
exists 𝑐𝑐 ∈]𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏[ such that 𝑓𝑓(𝑐𝑐) > 𝑓𝑓(𝑎𝑎). Show that for all 𝑚𝑚 ∈]𝑓𝑓(𝑎𝑎), 𝑓𝑓(𝑐𝑐)[ there exist two
numbers 𝑐𝑐1 , 𝑐𝑐2 ∈ [𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏] such that 𝑓𝑓(𝑐𝑐1 ) = 𝑓𝑓(𝑐𝑐2 ) = 𝑚𝑚.
Hint: Use intermediate value theorem twice.
