Description of Skill
(SCD) Sequential compression device is used in clients to prevent blood clots in the legs. They do this by
improving blood flow in their legs. These devices go on the lower portion of the legs. They inflate with air one side
at a time. It gives the leg a squeeze, it is to mimic walking. This is helpful in preventing blood clots.

Indications CONSIDERATIONS

The sleeves are given to any patient that is

in the hospital with limited movement for
multiple days. Or recovering from surgery.
They are used to promote venous return
from the legs, decreasing risk of DVT and
PE.
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post)
Prior to applying for the SCD's verify patients name
and DOB. Make sure that there is an order for them.
Explain to the patient what they are and what they do.
Look over patients’ legs to check for any open
lesions, or any type of decreased circulation. Apply
devices to legs. make sure they are applied correctly,
with the opening at the knee. Secure with the Velcro
tabs. Two fingers should fit between legend sleeves.
Connect the sleeves to the unit and adjust as
needed. Assess patient for pain. Document.

Outcomes/Evaluation
