kuva kirkastunut hänen mielessään sankarien sankariksi ja hänessä
kyti palava halu tulla isän kaltaiseksi. Se ajatus hänet nytkin ohjasi
muistamaan retkensä tarkoitusta.
Kun Antti selitti kuka hän oli ja millä asialla hän kulki, sanoi mies:
"Voi poika parka, pahaan aikaanpa retkellesi läksit. Vainolainen on
taas liikkeellä. Joukottain on heitä kulkenut, eivät ole vielä ehtineet
tuhojaan tehdä, mutta kostontuumat kuuluu heillä olevan
mielessään. Viime kevättalven aikana meidän puolen miehet
retkeilivät kaukana Laatokan rantamailla, sitä nyt kostavat. Meidän
talon väki on vetäytynyt salolle piilopirtteihinsä. Mitenkä se Yrjö noin
nuoren miehen yksin päästi näin vaaralliselle retkelle."
Sitä oli Antti varronnut, nyt oli tullut se hetki, jota hän oli odottanut.
Nyt oli hänen paettava sissien käsistä, jos milloin. Mutta hänellä oli
kädet vielä siteissä ja hän oli Petrin ja muiden sissien välissä
pengermän rinteellä. Pitemmän aikaa oli hän siteitään koettanut
hivuttaa auki. Nyt hän vartiainsa nukkuessa voi käyttää
hampaitaankin apunaan. Siten sai hän viimein kätensä vapaiksi.
Varovaisesti kohottautui hän istualleen, nelin kontin harppaili hän
Petrin yli hänen heräämättään ja nyt ulos kankaalle pakoon. Mutta —
suolat. Ne tulivat Antille mieleen. Niitä varten hän oli retkelleen
lähtenyt ja palaisiko hän nyt ilman suoloja kotiin. Kyllähän yksi
sisseistä oli kaatanut osan suoloista pois, mutta oli niitä vielä enin
osa kontissa jäljellä. — Tuolla oli kontti muiden tavarain kanssa
yhdessä kasassa, tuossa puolittain sissien laukun alla. Mutta laukun
päällä oli yhden sissi, pää. Varovaisesti hiipi Antti tavarain yläpuolelle
ja koetti vetää konttiaan esille. Kontti tulikin, mutta toinen viileke oli
tarttunut laukun reunassa olevaan koukkuun ja sen kautta tuli Antti
vetäisseeksi laukkua vähän syrjään. Mies, jonka pää oli laukulla,
makasi hyvin keveästi. Hän siitä melkein heräsi.
"Sainhan minä suoloja, mutta ei ole kontti enää täysi. Osan kaatoi
vallaton Petri sissi maahan…"
