Questions

1. Select one of the Design for X principles given in the lecture notes (other than Design for Assembly
and Design for Environment since these were completed as examples).

a) State your choice and describe what factors your design should focus on. List 2 primary design
considerations and 2 secondary design considerations of your chosen Design for X.
b) Find 2 examples of products or designs that demonstrate your chosen Design for X. Include a
picture or sketch of each. Explain how each of the examples fits your chosen Design for X.

2. You are working as an engineer at a biomedical engineering firm. You have been tasked with creating
a robotic exoskeleton to help patients who have had strokes stand and walk around more easily.

a) Generate a list of 5 good design criteria (ensure your criteria are specific and measurable).
b) Generate 3 preliminary ideas for solving the design problem.
c) Create a decision matrix to evaluate your 3 ideas from part b). Assign weights to the 5 design
criteria from part a). Populate the matrix and select the best idea based on your results.

3. Select a power tool to analyze for function, hazards and labels. It could be a tool from your toolbox,
shed or garage, or a tool found online. Examples include a lawn mower, table saw or drill press.

a) List the primary, secondary and tertiary functions of the tool.

b) List all hazards associated with the tool.
c) List each label provided with the tool and describe its intention.

4. A gear blank is cast out of tool steel using a die casting process. The gear is to be used in a
transmission where it must mate with adjacent gears to a precise tolerance. The gears will transmit
power through the transmission and so must have good hardness and wear resistance.

a) Which machining process would be most suitable for creating the gear teeth? List 2 advantages
and 2 disadvantages of this machining process.
b) Which heat treatment process should be used after machining to attain the desired properties?
Briefly describe the process.
c) Which inspection process(es) could be used to look for internal voids in the gear? Do you expect
internal voids to be present from the die casting process?
