Questions

1. (12 points) You are going to test drive a 2021 Volkswagen GTI. Before heading out you decide to
look up some technical details from the owner’s manual. The car has a 6 speed manual transmission
and a maximum engine speed of 6000 RPM. The tires have an outer diameter of 637 mm and the
differential provides a final drive ratio of 3.24. The transmission gear ratios are given in the table.

Gear 1 2 3 4 5 6
Gear Ratio 3.77 2.09 1.47 1.09 1.10 0.91

a) (6 points) What is the maximum speed (km/hr) of the car?

b) (2 points) What is the total number of gears in the transmission? How many of them will be
rotating while the engine is running?
c) (1 point) What type of brakes do you expect to find on the front and rear wheels?
d) (3 points) What type of clutch do you expect to find between the engine and transmission? What
kind of spring is used in the clutch and how does it work?

2. (12 points) The 2017 Tour de France (a famous road bike race) was won by Rigoberto Uran of
Colombia. The race involved two sections, a climb up a long hill and a descent down the other side.
For the climb, he selected a gear ratio using a 39 tooth sprocket on the front and a 30 tooth sprocket
on the rear. During the climb, he pedaled at a cadence of 81 RPM and produced 378 W of power. He
experienced a mechanical failure before the descent which limited him to a single gear ratio using a
53 tooth sprocket on the front and an 11 tooth sprocket on the rear. During the descent, he pedaled at
a cadence of 70 RPM and produced 339 W of power. His bike was equipped with 27” diameter tires.

a) (6 points) What average speed (km/hr) did he maintain for both the climb and descent sections?
b) (4 points) What was his input and output torque (Nm) for both the climb and descent sections?
c) (2 points) Do you think he was lucky in terms of the gear he was limited to by his mechanical
failure? Why or why not?

3. (8 points) Consider the hydraulic press example solved in class. A compression test is being done on
the material sample and it is desired to compress it by a total of 5 inches vertically. The pump handle
has a total range of motion of 90° from top to bottom as shown below (45° up and 45° down from the
horizontal). Everything else from the example solved in class still applies.

a) (4 points) How many times will the technician need to pump the handle? (Assume he or she
uses the full range of motion for each pump)
b) (4 points) It is desired to replace the hydraulic press with a hydraulic cylinder to automate the
test. The compression, load and displacement requirements are unchanged. Select a suitable
hydraulic cylinder from the supplier McMaster Carr (www.mcmaster.com) and provide the part
number and cost.

Range of
Motion = 90°
